This way I can install the same bill of materials every time
it contains XPath-style selectors and the ability to directly modify matched nodes in a Dict, including filtering (as indirect deletion) and upserts; the only thing that it's missing is sufficient addressability with regards to Lists (arrays), so I see myself building a similar 'op' processing but using jsonpath instead of jsonpatch language.

Frankly the invocations are so arcane for these various supporting tools that I have been distributing a standard Makefile to projects to hide the complexity - "What's old is new again"!

If I recall correctly, you would open up the repl and start typing a command, and the output would refresh as you typed. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

There are two equally valid subjective choices here:
- does moving your finger up "grab the content" under the glass and move it up, or
- does moving your finger up "grab the window", moving it up along a long virtual document?
Both are legit mental models, it's a preference.
One of them is simple and just gets out of your way, the other is more powerful and complex and requires more investment to set up correctly to your use case. Probably different strokes for different folks here.
