You should definitely look at Austria's "Sozialer Wohnbau" and "Gemeindebau" in Vienna https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemeindebau

Also look at the conference series Working Class Districts and Urban Policies https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https:/...

Scientific American has a high res version of olaus Magnus carta marina, so you can see all those pesky (sea) monsters up close ;)

Nice, didn't know that detail, always something new, thx.
gego··on EFF co-founder John Gilmore removed from org's Board
True, just thought it might give some insight into recent pain points, Gilmore's email at the eff is gnu after all :)
gego··on EFF co-founder John Gilmore removed from org's Board
Perhaps this is relevant although it is about the fsf(clarification added after comments): https://www.theregister.com/2021/06/16/glibc_gnulib_fsf_copy...

The glibc stewards are seeking input from developers to decide if the project should relax the requirement to assign copyright for all changes to the Free Software Foundation,"

I do not, and have never, had an assignment in place (it's a running joke that my patch contributions have been all-minus-signs)," wrote glibc contributor Rich Felker, "but given recent behaviour by the FSF board, I am completely unwilling to assign copyright to them in the future, so not making this change may affect my ability to contribute.

...not eye to eye with Gilmore? Thanks for gnu tar, liberating bsd, parts of gnu make, gbd, curating binutils and gcc with Cygnus, helping in the crypto wars, frees/wan, boots, gnu radio, one laptop per child... so it might be hard to be eye to eye me thinks...

gego··on Facebook Political Problems
... it's basically the Thiel way of doing things... Competition is for losers, monopolies are fine, local situation does not concern, extracting wealth is key, even if we destroy the local ecosystem in the process... makes me optimistic for any eco change chance we might still have...
gego··on I'm sorry
...so that's how you get a lot of work for nothing... people, please never sign something without at least clearly stating what you think it means. A sneaky way is printing the document and sending it back together with a statement of how you interprete it - best on the page you should sign... A simple (see email 211007) below your signature often is enough... if you did not sign on paper but just by clicking some buttons, your position is even better, especially if you are in a non us legislation and there is no translation...
gego··on Facebook Political Problems
Thank you for the great article. I would argue, that a lot of the negative side effects you discuss vary due to the country you live in.

Countries who do have achieved a working balance between eco, social and market- economy (some in Europe or Asia) suffer, as platforms like Facebook attack their foundations - a bit like a trojan horse - offering a neutral platform for products and ideas often not subject to the laws, taxes and regulations that make the balance work ...

gego··on Ask HN: Are you still using business cards or which alternatives have you tried?
good point - you are basically arguing against extravagant alternatives that would break the flow of conversation as people are so cute sed to seeing and taking business cards - what I fear is that the automatic reaction continues after a meeting by dumping them all ...
gego··on Sending newsletters should cost something
...while we're at it, if we are taxing senders why not also finally put a cost on metadata and user data e.g. by a fee that gets sent to a copyright collective... "little" basic income there we go ;)
gego··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Entrepreneurs sold off supplies and want importers to offer more for cheap...
gego··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
...this is not what happened - Russia did deliver on time and the reserves were sold off. Now those same people cry wolf and want Exporters to offer more for cheap...
gego··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
...actually there should be no shortage... It's the invisible hand of the market... it was just that those who should have stored gas for winter use sold it of because of demand and prices- and are now trying to pressure Exporters to offer additional gas for cheap to fill up their tanks again... and yes, with North Stream 2 completed, Russia could benefit from this, too...

So through gas market liberalisation it got very difficult to keep reserves against the will of entrepreneurs, who decided that their profit is more important than freezing EU citizens. Now they want to distract from that by blaming Exporters and mainly Russia, who delivered on time and the agreed upon amount, for not offering more cheap gas under market value... Peak Capitalism ftw

gego··on Was Germany’s 19th century industrial expansion due to an absence of copyright?
...only years late but better late than never... there is a lot of research, eh by Giesecke or Eisenstein, that is decades old.. the question has already been answered multiple times... and has been ignored as often... yes!

The weak copyright protections especially in contrast to GB, where there were strict and centralized rules in early modern Europe is a first indicator, this only intensified in the later centuries leading to piracy making information affordable - thus preparing a whole population for industrial production...
