geetfun··on Show HN: I taught my little brother JS, and he made this videogame in a week
Nice game! How old is your little brother?
geetfun··on Amazon driver arrested after taking GPS 'bait' package off Washington Co. porch
You know, it’s tough. We don’t know this guy’s backstory, but we do live in a society where there are rules. His decision will have personal repercussions. Unfortunately that’s the way things are. And yes, other people steal too but never so much see a fine or jail time, but that’s the way the world works.
geetfun··on Estimating the chances of something that hasn’t happened yet
N is the sample size that you’ve sampled already in your observation.

If you’ve sampled all the pages, then we are talking about certainty which this wouldn’t apply.

geetfun··on Digital Ocean Managed Databases
@raiyu, this is excellent and thank you. It’s reassuring to see DO’s leadership come out and explain things.
geetfun··on What Could You Build with $10k?
Thanks for the insight.
geetfun··on What Could You Build with $10k?
Just curious, what are boutique VOIP providers?
geetfun··on How to Name a Baby (2013)
And don’t forget to make sure that whatever you name them, the associated domain name eg. firstlastname.com is available.

Working as a web developer, occupational reflex made me do a quick check every time my wife and I came up with a name for our kids.

geetfun··on Ask HN: Is anyone using the Windows 10 Subsytem for Linux?
I do use it on a consistent basis, after my MacBook had keyboard issues in May. I forced myself to create an entire web app on it over the course of 1 month to see how it felt.

Surprisingly, it was quite a pleasure to work with. There are certainly small little quirks that takes some getting used to and some keyboard short cuts that aren’t present from my Mac setup. Nonetheless, WSL is good enough that I would happily recommend it to colleagues.

geetfun··on Ask HN: What is your favorite deployment/hosting choices for Rails 5?
Unaffiliated with Hatchbox. +1 for the ease of use and reliability.
geetfun··on Is the Lean Startup Dead?
As a bootstrapper, I see the point of what this article is trying to say. It's been increasingly difficult to create products that can find product market fit/validation and reach a scale where the income justifies the effort. And to top it off, the MVPs are becoming much more full product than simple landing page MVPs of years past -- and all of this requires a lot of capital (time, money, connections, volunteers, etc).

As more entrepreneurs enter the space, competition will only become more fierce. Even selling the tools to the gold rush has become commoditized with the choices available.

geetfun··on Apple’s Stock Market Scam
What I found interesting in Apple’s earnings is how little money they need to pour into R&D and operating expenses. This leaves a huge retained earnings which has resulted in them having so much cash left over. It’s super easy for Cooke to indulge himself and enter new markets, but he’s an operations guy and it’s nice to see he’s sticking to his core competency. I’d be a bit nervous to see another CEO come along and try to be the next Steve Jobs (with a high chance of failing at that) and burning through billions of dollars.
geetfun··on Ask HN: How old are you (optional) and what was the last thing that you learned?
Wife and I were just talking about this and how this is a great example of how decisions made in one generation can have consequences that span multiple generations (eg. Eggs, where one’s family immigrated to, etc)
geetfun··on IBM Wins $83M from Groupon in E-Commerce Patent Fight
Just purely out of curiosity when reading this. It seems like a lot of companies license these specific patents (eg. Twitter, Alphabet) as mentioned in the article. Does anyone know what patents they were referring to?
geetfun··on Facebook stock drops more than 20% after revenue forecast misses
The guidance is nice. It resets expectation, especially amongst the analyst community. Makes it easier for FB to beat expectations the next time around.
geetfun··on Nissan Admits Internal Emissions-Test Results were Falsified
Agreed. There’s definitely a real technical meaning in the word professional. Although the idea of being a “profession” sounds good, it’s riddled with regulation and ways that make the job less likeable for the practitioners. I left one before becoming a software developer.

Nonetheless, being an ethical human being is just a good idea.

geetfun··on Job-hopping increases, in possible boon to wage growth and productivity
There are certainly many definitions of “winning”. I can only speak for myself: quitting my old job lowered my pay, but resulted in my being a lot happier and having more time to spend with my kids. If anything, the current trend and the number of people willing to jump jobs has helped people like myself take the leap into something new — something I might not have done without seeing others do.
geetfun··on Ask HN: I hacked an ecommerce website, what do I do now?
Contact a lawyer who represents clients for this sort of thing (if such even exists). The company in question — who knows how they will react. Even if we (all of us here on HN) know your intentions are noble, your discovery may inevitably lead to someone getting fired over this. That person may very well portray your hacking as malicious and try to divert the blame on you. Better safe than sorry.
geetfun··on Europa: Browser-Based AudioWorklet Synth
Loved Reason and my old maudio controller. Blew me away how solid their software ran on my underpowered computer.
geetfun··on Ask HN: What are your criteria for selecting cofounders?
It’s almost impossible to reduce the criteria in finding the right cofounder. Likely the ideal candidate will also look at other person with an equally critical eye as well. I’d say serendipity and chance occurrence that the business is something you both want to work on and find regular intervals of success are probably determinants in deciding (retrospectively) if the cofounder was right.
geetfun··on Man donated blood every week for 60 years and helped save 2.4M babies
Yup, I believe it’s called Hemochromatosis. I can’t find the source but I recall reading that donating blood also reduces cardiovascular risk.
geetfun··on Ask HN: Any good collaboratively built documentation on good parenting?
It’s hard to arrive at a consensus of what constitutes good parenting. For example, my sister wants her kids to be doctors, and so all activities and goals are oriented toward that. I prefer my kids choose a career path that brings personal happiness and freedom of time. As such, my methods and KPIs are different. Parenting is sort of one of those things that can easily degrade into a constant stream of fomo.
geetfun··on MacBook Pro? No
So I bought a MBP 13 Mid-2017 Non touch bar. The left shift key started failing about 2 months ago. Went to Apple, and they replaced the key which seemed to have fixed it. It started failing again this week.

I noticed there's a bit of correlation with how hot the machine is running. Ironically, I bought this upgrade to my previous MBP (another 13" from 2013) to run docker better -- but for anyone who runs docker for development knows, the machine runs hot.

The keyboard isn't so bad once you get used to it (I type fairly fast at 120-150 wpm), but the keyboard reliability issue is really something that bugs me as it affects productivity. If you're a programmer, needing to train to use the shift key on the contralateral side is a pain -- especially give all the muscle memory that's been trained over the years.

geetfun··on IKEA Effect
I recently bought a 3D printer and feel the same "Ikea effect" as well. My wife comments how I spent (over the holidays) a disproportionate amount of time tinkering and declogging the nozzle to make items I could have otherwise purchased at the dollar store.
geetfun··on The Christmas crypto correction. What really happened
Although the author didn't give any evidence and just a lot of circumstantial hand waving, the whole idea of market manipulation by the exchanges isn't something new. eg. the stock market

In the new year, look for a narrow trading range on a day to day or even week by week basis, with a steady rise in price on relatively low volume. This could possibly be a tell that things are being manipulated upward.

geetfun··on Goldman Sachs Is Setting Up a Cryptocurrency Trading Desk
I agree. I "missed out" on purchasing some bitcoin assets early on. So seeing a lot of the rise right now, I don't share in the excitement as -- I would imagine -- someone who's holding a few thousand BTCs.

Having said that, I think there's a bit of (healthy) skepticism amongst those of us who hold "traditional" assets regarding BTC.

As someone who holds real estate as part of the investment portfolio, I understand and see the return from the rental properties. Stocks give me dividends. Bonds give me interest payments.

Currently, all these yields are in dollars. But would I gladly accept BTC as payment? Currently -- no. It's too volatile for it to be useful. And the entire issue of blockchain transaction backlog is worrisome.

So if a tenant comes to me and says, "I'll pay this month's rent in BTC," I'd still have to say, "No thanks. I'll take dollars please."

geetfun··on Facebook Is the Junk Food of Socializing (2015)
I agree that FB can be a big time sink. Every time I consider removing FB from my phone, I realize how much I learn about marketing on FB from the ads I see and the groups to which I belong.

If your job involves online marketing, being on Facebook is almost like research for one's job. And without maintaining a connection to this world, it's easy to lose touch with what other marketers are doing and rely on blog articles -- which are, oftentimes, out of date and common knowledge by the time one comes across them organically.

geetfun··on Cloudflare Warp
This looks like a ngrok competitor. Am I missing something or is this essentially the same kind of service?
geetfun··on Show HN: LogoFox – fast logo maker
Congrats on the launch. Yes, some folks have mentioned about the UI not being optimized or whatever. But it's easy to defer launching with the hope that everything would be "perfect" from the get-go. In any case, it's a good enough MVP and hopefully you'll get some sales and valuable feedback to improve your product further.
geetfun··on Intel will ship processors with integrated AMD graphics and memory
It definitely looks like a survival move to counter the upcoming AXX Apple chips in the next few years. New iMac Pro apparently has a A10 in it for boot up sequence.

geetfun··on The best laptop ever made
I really loved the 2012-2015 line of MBPs. I didn't have a 15 inch, but the 13 inch one. It'll always be my favourite as it's the perfect balance between size/portability/power/style.
