geedee77··on Can programmers without CS degrees find jobs?
I've not got a CS degree (or any degree actually) and I've never really had trouble getting a job in IT. I started as a junior developer and worked my way up. I'm currently 35 and working as European Director for a large company.

As people have said, the trick is learning in your own time and learning quickly in your jobs. I agree with whoever said it that there's somethings that will be a challenge because you might not have the right level of Maths (etc) but you should be able to get by as long as you're committed.

geedee77··on Living Without Time
You've fallen into the trap of reading about something that is written by someone who has no real boss and thinking that you could apply it to yourself.

Living 'without time' is a great idea and is ideal for how we, as humans, have developed. Unfortunately, in the real world, the rest of us need to use time to make sure we do things on other peoples schedules. Whether it be the boss, the airline, the doctor, the kid's school or whatever, we need to make sure we're aligned.

You will only be able to really do this if none of those things apply to you and you can spend your days doing whatever you want.

This needs to be integrated in with Siri so you can walk up to James and whisper to Siri and she'll tell you his wifes name, what he does and how his kids are doing in school ... if only there was a Siri API.

Pen and paper (or iPad equivalent)?
geedee77··on iCloud’s Real Purpose is to Kill Windows
This is an old concept that Microsoft themselves used in early version of Excel. I remember that there was a way to get early Excel to use the same commands as Lotus 1-2-3 which, I think, was the main spreadsheet application at the time. I'm going back 25 years though so apologies if my memory is not what it used to be!
geedee77··on Startups: Don't just collect my email address
I do completely agree with this post but when did a blog post become the place for a one line piece of advice? What happened to the long, detailed blog post with loads of useful information - did they die out whilst I wasn't watching?
geedee77··on Images of US Military Space Drone
I can't remember where I read it (it may have been Wikipedia) but the shape X-37 was based on the shuttle which is why it's the current craft that's being developed by the military. There was another craft prototyped but it was too costly and time consuming to test out a completely new shape.
geedee77··on Working at Microsoft – Day to Day Coding
This is the exact opposite to me. I spend my full day working, hit (or better) all deadlines, come in about 2 hours early and I still get grief from the big boss for leaving on-time!
geedee77··on Remnants of a Disappearing UI
I was expecting a large background image to load because the text colour seemed so inappropriate to the actual background.

geedee77··on For what are the Windows A:\ and B:\ drives used?
My older brother, when learning assembly, needed a memory address to write to on the hard disk of my Dad's business computer. Sadly he chose the first one as he hadn't discovered the File Allocation Table at that point. My Dad wasn't best pleased, even though technically the data was still on the disk!
geedee77··on Minimalist renditions of international brands
I thought the Schweppes one was easily the best but the Lindt version took away from the luxury feel of the brand and damaged the buying experience.
geedee77··on WakeMates are ready
I'm in the same boat. Just checked paypal, ordered on 25th Nov 2009, refunded on 4th August 2010 but with a shortfall due to currency conversion differences so I'm basically out of pocket (admittedly only a bit) due to lack of product.

As I've said previously, I actually don't even own the phone anymore that I intended to use this product with. I just hope for the sake of the company that this is the beginning of the end of their constant problems.

geedee77··on WakeMate Blog - In Production
I was excited by WakeMate when it first appeared and signed up but it's been so long in shipping that I no longer have an iPhone that I can use it with. Talk about disappointment.
geedee77··on Mac App Store denial
Reminds me of a web application I put together for a large British corporation. I was waiting for the final copy to be approved so gave them a test site with several bits of lorem ipsum in place of real text. It was failed due to there being "a translation issue" on some parts because "it was doing something funny and changing the English text to Greek or something". This was from an apparently 'technical' person as well!
geedee77··on Paypal.com appears to be unavailable
I'm not saying they aren't but when has the tactic against a bully being to bully them? Regardless of what you think about Paypal themselves, there are an awful lot of people that rely on the service they provide that can now no longer use that service due to the tactics of Anonymous.
geedee77··on Paypal.com appears to be unavailable
To be perfectly honest, the actions of the 'anonymous' are pretty disgusting and it's bullying. A company provides a useful service to the majority of the on-line world and, just because they do something to protect themselves and their identity (there's a lot of people who dislike wikileaks) then this 'collective' decide to disrupt the whole company.

Bullying was pathetic in high school and is so much worse in the 'grown-up' world, especially when it affects so many normal people.

geedee77··on Moniker Deactivated My Domain 26 Days Before The Expiration Date
Why are people so quick to blog about problems before trying to get them solved? The article clearly states that it was only after posting the original that the Moniker agent was contacted, isn't that the first port-of-call?

I had a similar situation recently where I cancelled my auto-renewal 6 months before the renewal date and my site was pulled (even though I'd paid for the year). I could've blogged about it and tried to encourage everyone not to use the provider, but I just contacted them direct and got a quick resolution. Maybe if I'd had no response I'd have tried to make it public but there was no need as it was a simple mistake.

It seems to me that these days people want to shout out their problems far too quickly rather than try and get them fixed. This is a strange way of getting things resolved.

geedee77··on List of facilities 'vital to US security' leaked
This is massively irresponsible and smacks of the Wikileaks team trying to 'get at' the US government for reasons unknown. This is really the sort of information that could put lives in danger. Whatever good Wikileaks attempts to do is immediately overshadowed by such a stupid and naive leak such as this.

I hope the people responsible are brought to full justice when an innocent person dies because they work at a facility that has just become a target for terror.

geedee77··on The dark side of open source conferences [about women being harassed]
I certainly wouldn't presume to berate you for your opinion, and it's good to see someone who considers both sides to an argument, but I think we do need to keep hearing about these things otherwise we get to the point where we assume it's not happening when it clearly is.
geedee77··on The dark side of open source conferences [about women being harassed]
I think this is a good article and a great reminder to us all about the underside to the world. I do want to say, though, that the 'men' (and they are only described as such due to their gender) in this story are a very small minority that you would find in any group of people.

I'm not so naive to say that sexism doesn't exist in our industry, because it clearly does, but I would say that the vast majority of people would neither encourage or stand for any sort of sexism, whether overt or not.

I think it is tempting to create a link between the stereotypical 'geek' - who is a guy that lives in his mom's basement and never meets women - and the sort of overt sexism and abuse as described in this article, but that is dangerous. That stereotype no longer exists, if it ever did, and there will always be men, from whatever industry or walk of life, who view women as objects and not equals. We need to work on this attitude in every walk of life, not just in the tech world.

geedee77··on Want An iPod Nano Watch? So Does Everyone. New Kickstarter King
I'm in my 30's and wear a watch all the time (apart from in bed). I did go for a period (about two years) of not wearing one but it always didn't feel right. The reason for not wearing one then was because my previous one broke and I convinced myself I didn't need it due to the phone in my pocket.

I'm currently wearing the one my girlfriend got me for Christmas and, not only does it make my wrist feel better, it reminds me of her all the time which makes me feel closer to her (sorry for the sloppiness!).

geedee77··on Scientists: Go ahead, kill all the mosquitoes.
The thing that worries me, and the thing that I think no-one has mentioned (apologies if you have) is that when did we have the right to exterminate a whole species just because it makes our lives uncomfortable?

I'm well aware that malaria and other diseases carried by mosquitoes are a very large killer in parts of the world but why aren't we trying to cure these diseases rather than wipe out a whole species?

It just seems as if we, as a species, think we rule this planet so can do whatever we want with regard to the other species that exist on it.

geedee77··on Machine Converts Plastic Back into Oil
The real gain that I could see from this is that we could have a device like this in every home, similar to a waste disposal unit. Then, if the refinary tech is small and safe enough, we could create our own fuels (for vehicles or generators as the video suggested). That way we'd cut down dramatically on the CO2 footprint of fuelling these devices.
geedee77··on What's happening at Yahoo
Yes, try working at a major law firm where technology is something that's tolerated rather than encouraged!
geedee77··on $500k Selling Camera+ pulled from AppStore over 'Easter Egg'
Maybe it is shit, but it's also documented and the punishments for ignoring the policy are clearly laid out.

As much as you or I may think it's a bit dumb that Apple won't allow the easter egg, we can't be surprised by their reaction to it once they knew about it.
