gebe··on Announcing Xamarin 2.0
Here are two developers that have shared some stats on code reuse:

iCircuit http://praeclarum.org/post/42378027611/icircuit-code-reuse-p...

TouchDraw http://lipsky.me/blog/2012/9/11/touchdraw-code-reuse-updated

gebe··on Announcing Xamarin 2.0
I guess he means Unity which uses Mono. But there are others as well like MonoGame which is the de facto XNA successor (and its natural evolution) and Playstation Mobile that uses Mono.

edit: Would be quite awesome if they somehow incorporated the Mono runtime on the new Playstation as well for indie development. Here's for wishful thinking!

gebe··on Opera moves to WebKit
If it's one browser that have a shit ton of per domain/site options it is Opera.

edit: Also, what is up with the throwing around of the word "irrelevancy" on HN lately. Usually in snarky contexts as well.

gebe··on Google’s New Office In Dublin
Kind of looks like they moved into an IKEA store.
gebe··on [dead]
Features, their rendering and javascript engines were the reasons I left Opera for Chrome. They will get me back in a heartbeat if this works out well.
gebe··on 300 million users strong, Opera moves to WebKit
Same experience, left Opera for Chrome for exactly the same reasons. However I miss much of the features in my daily use, the ones you listed and many more. Especially Opera's tab preview that doesn't seem to have an equivalent in Chrome is something I have found myself missing deeply. I really hope Opera becomes a viable alternative for me again now.
gebe··on Aggressive negative advertising by Microsoft against Google.
Well believe it or not but some people don't like the idea of targeted ads, which is the result of Google's scanning. Small anecdote, when my 66 year old father found out that a grocery store chain was sending him "personal deals" based on what he had bought using their card he immediately went home and cut it. He thought (and thinks) that no one should be keeping tabs on his buying patterns for commercial purposes, even though he might stand to gain from it. I was kind of suprised by his harsch reaction at first but later I was actually kind of proud of the fact that he cared so much about his personal privacy and integrity. This might seem shocking to the "web generation" but I think it can be a quite healthy and refreshing mindset sometimes.

On a personal note I have taken an interest in Xamarin's stuff lately and since Google is the all-seeing-eye of the web that means I now see Xamarin ads wherever I go (those not caught by adblock that is). Maybe I should care more as well, the more I think of it the less ok it feels.

gebe··on It's Official: XNA is dead
Luckily that XNA experience transfers over to MonoGame and the general principles of basic game programming are quite universal. A lot of aspiring game developers have got their feet wet thanks to XNA.
gebe··on Mojang's Monster Profits
That was last year though. And it was 27 million SEK not USD.

edit: Just wanted to make it clear what the article said, it was not meant to sound negative. It is truly an awesome and very kind gesture from Markus!

gebe··on Calcutta girl who fled home & marriage at 17 returns as millionaire US innovator
Well that's not true. Hard work alone is usually never enough and certainly not in the 21st century US. If I was dirt poor and looking to emmigrate I would probably try to get somewhere where they take better care of less fortunate and where they offer equal opportunity regarding education, health care and so on to everyone. If I was looking for the American dream I wouldn't go to America.
gebe··on Adioso is reinventing travel search. Check these never-before-possible searches
Cool stuff but maybe not as revolutionary as the title claims it to be. Minus the NLP most of these searches have been possible for years at my favourite swedish travel aggregator site.
gebe··on Billionaires
Stefan Persson, #20 on that list, payed around 127 million USD in taxes in Sweden two years ago and his family all together (him included) payed around 200 million USD in taxes that same year. He has payed about 1 billion USD in total in taxes over the last 10 years. I would say that he and his family contribute a lot to the Swedish society at least.
gebe··on San Jose State to offer ground-breaking low-cost, for-credit online courses
Ok, thank you for explaining! I am not from the US so I didn't know it was uncommon with online courses for non-degree students.

edit: Although now that I think about it I should have guessed. Having a system with an expensive tuition to be paid by the student probably doesn't roll so well with pick-and-choose online courses for everyone.

gebe··on San Jose State to offer ground-breaking low-cost, for-credit online courses
Is the ground-breaking part the cost of it? I just think it sounds like normal online courses. Maybe I am missing something?
gebe··on Why aren't young programmers interested in mainframes?
A couple of years ago they actually started a one year COBOL/Mainframe education program here in Stockholm. Mostly backed by banks and insurance companies and from what I have heard many of the people that have applied and graduated have been quite young (for example I read an interview with someone straight out of high school who was about to graduate).
gebe··on The Exceptional Beauty of Doom 3's Source Code
And don't forget the check the discussion about Carmack's comment from yesterday http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5055808 .
gebe··on A new UI annoyance
Wow, I didn't know about that. Thanks for sharing.
gebe··on C# is the past, the present and the future
I would say the experience is what matters. The user doesn't care what technology the developer used. If you can make gorgeous, fluid and speedy native apps with Mono and C# (which is very much possible) while at the same time making it easier to do cross platform development and deployment then why not.
gebe··on Apple expects Chinese sales 'to overtake US'
Much like in the rest of the world then, the status thing that is :)
gebe··on A new UI annoyance
Worked without an account for me.
gebe··on C# is the past, the present and the future
Mostly on mobile I would guess. Xamarin has a showcase on their site: http://xamarin.com/apps .

Also every game made in Unity is using Mono, which is _a lot_ of games. The Playstation Vita and Wii U uses Mono as well for third party development.

gebe··on How should I deal with an employee who has slept with my wife?
This wouldn't hold at all where I am from. Also I don't get your point at all to be honest, it's completely disconnected from work. Even though it may feel like a personal betrayal I just don't see how this is work related.
gebe··on JavaScript is the future...maybe
Going off topic here but: I won't disagree with the utopian notion of a world where everyone have a common lingua franca, I think that would be a good thing as well. There being only a single language though, that's definitely not a very positive thing.
gebe··on The Rise and Fall of Languages in 2012
A couple of years ago they actually started a one year COBOL education program here in Stockholm. Mostly backed by banks and insurance companies and from what I have heard most graduates have gotten relevant jobs. I doubt that the demand will be larger than the supply for much longer but it is quite fascinating nonetheless.
gebe··on Valve And Xi3 Team For ‘Piston’ Steam Box
I very much doubt that this is Valve's "official" steam box offering. This article is a bit more sensational than others' that have been posted on the subject today.
gebe··on IRC is dead, long live IRC
Using it daily since 13 years back (half of my life) as the sole medium for communicating with most of my friends. First we had a channel on a public network but now we are on our own server since 4 years back. MSN had a stint as the way of communicating with my less tech savvy friends, it is now replaced by Skype. IRC feels kind of impossible to replace though.
gebe··on The In-game Economics of Ultima Online (1999)
In the MMORPG area there is today Darkfall which is kind of a spiritual successor to UO in many regards (full loot, anyone can kill you outside cities and so on) but in first and third person 3D. The original game had its issues though and is closed down since mid November because of the release of the now much hyped sequel Darkfall: Unholy Wars (a.k.a Darkfall 2.0), coincidentally coming out on Wednesday next week. It was also greentlit on steam in record time (like within 24h) so there's definitely craving for games like this out there.

edit: http://www.youtube.com/user/DarkfallOnline for anyone interested.

gebe··on They Cracked This 250 Year-Old Code, And Found a Secret Society Inside
Wow, not often accomplishments from people you actually know and have had as teachers end up on the frontpage of HN. I was at the same talk by Kevin Knight as Schaefer and I can vouch for that it was a mighty interesting one! I actually changed my curriculum a bit (to include cryptography) as a result of his talk.
gebe··on Linus Torvalds: Is Engadget really that stupid? Just corrupt? Trolling us all?
No need for it in Sweden. It probably varies from country to country.
gebe··on Windows Phone 8 live event (10 AM PT)
Yeah, Ballmer is presenting all of the brands at the moment. I noticed that he even pocketed the Nokia, I wonder if that was part of the deal ;)
