gcampbell··on Ask HN: AWS Down?
This appears to be resolved. AWS posted an update to their status page, which matches some of the observations in this thread about it being ISP-specific:

[RESOLVED] External Connectivity Issues

Between 11:43 AM and 1:30 PM PST some customers may have experienced connectivity issues between an external provider outside of our network and AWS destinations. This issue impacted connectivity originating from California. Connectivity to instances and services within the Region was not impacted during this issue. All AWS Services have been, and continue to operate normally.

gcampbell··on LinkedIn adopts protocol buffers and reduces latency up to 60%
from the article:

> Based on the learnings from the Protocol Buffers rollout, the team is planning to follow up with migration from Rest.li to gRPC, which also uses Protocol Buffers but additionally supports streaming and has a large community behind it.

Not only that, but the layoffs actually happened on February 15.
gcampbell··on A group of techies is using data skills to alter Seattle's housing affordability
I am a YIMBY who lives in the western neighborhoods of SF and would love to see them upzoned. I always think it's silly that there are perfectly pleasant pre-zoning 5-8 story apartment buildings down the street from my place that would be illegal to build under current regulations.
gcampbell··on Walkable Streets Are More Economically Productive
Do you have stats to back that up? A lot of the recent polling I've seen implies the opposite, especially for younger generations.

http://onesocialweb.org/ had the same idea (and a fair amount of code!), although it seems to be a bit dormant at the moment.

gcampbell··on How Homakov hacked GitHub & the line of code that could have prevented it
Github displays the username/avatar for a commit based on that commit's Author field, not the user that pushed the changes to the repository.
gcampbell··on Ask HN: Help a Hacker Out
I just shot you an email, but this seems like a reasonable place to note that my employer (Twitter) is hiring like mad, and we definitely have some big data to work with:

I thought the preferred pejorative for Leland Stanford was "robber baron".
gcampbell··on About concurrency and the GIL
Depending on the application, there are some options for process-internal multi-machine shared state - Erlang's mnesia distributed database, for instance.
gcampbell··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (October 2011)

I'm pretty sure he said "4x" rather than "Forex".
gcampbell··on Airbnb victim describes crime and aftermath
I submitted this article (a little warily because I know the front page has been inundated with this story) because it appears to contain the new-to-me information that an arrest in the case was made on June 28 and that the SFPD verified this on July 29.

(edit: Whoops, misread the date - sorry. This story does still seem to have more info from the SFPD than others I've read.)

gcampbell··on JQuery 1.6.2 syntax error? You may be the victim of SEO.
The second result is the release post, however - on Google, the release post doesn't show up at all in the first several pages, which is just weird.

gcampbell··on Deaths per unit of energy for various sources
The deaths from solar appear to be from falls while installing roof-mounted systems; this would be primarily applicable to residential and small commercial solar systems, whereas most larger systems will tend to be ground-mounted and safer to construct.
gcampbell··on Rails + MySQL scaling on a budget
DataMapper's dm-constraints plugin (https://github.com/datamapper/dm-constraints) can automatically add foreign key constraints to your associations, which has the side effect (in MySQL at least) of creating indices on the foreign key columns if they don't already exist.
gcampbell··on Node.js vs Erlang: SyncPad's Experience
Minor pedantry note: I think you mean OTP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Telecom_Platform), rather than OLTP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLTP).
gcampbell··on AI Sports Journalist Covers Every Division I College Basketball Team
I'm a Stanford fan, so here's a (nit-picky?) deconstruction of http://cardinalupdate.com/stanford-basketball/game-recap/sta... - the recap of the team's first game.

"Stanford has already started living up to monumental expectations with a good first game": I'm not sure where the "monumental expectations" comes from; Stanford finished below .500 last year and was picked 9th in the Pac-10 preseason media poll.

"Stanford defeated San Diego with domination in offensive rebounding and an additional beat in possession management.": Not sure what "an additional beat in" means here.

"Stanford has incredible expectations for this season, and this victory over Cardinal was a good start.": Should be "over the Toreros" or "for the Cardinal".

Overall, though, it's pretty slick.

gcampbell··on The 3 Programming Languages you need to Know
Minor refactoring note, since F# seems to bring that out in me: you could change the last bit to "List.reduce (+)". Or you could do the whole thing as "[0..10] |> List.sumBy (fun x -> x*x)"
