gbrown··on Apple Captures 75% of Global Handset Market Operating Profit in Q2 2021
Let me be clear, I mean technological and software competition. A duopoly between Android and Apple isn't it. For comparison, see the dekstop/laptop market, where there are many totally usable open source software alternatives to Windows/OSX.
gbrown··on Apple Captures 75% of Global Handset Market Operating Profit in Q2 2021
I really wish there was more competition in this space. Here's hoping someone like Canonical tries again now that the open-hardware world is starting to expand.

May they throw the CFAA at you, villain.

gbrown··on Plant-based meat deceleration signals niche future
It would start further up the chain with commodity farmers providing the feed.

[citation needed]

Also, it wouldn’t matter anyway: the climate impact of raising so many and feeding them carbon intensive grain is bonkers.

gbrown··on The latest campus cancellation is different
Sure… that’s it.
gbrown··on The latest campus cancellation is different
I mean, not being super familiar with this guy outside of what is presented in the article, there does seem to be a pretty important difference between someone like Milo and an actual academic giving an academic talk. I see why some would worry about cancelling a talk by the former (despite him being utterly repugnant and bringing nothing of substance to the audience), but the latter cancellation seems worse to me.
gbrown··on The latest campus cancellation is different
That’s hardly red-pilling though.
gbrown··on The latest campus cancellation is different
Having read the article, that seems like a nonsense take. Care to explain?
gbrown··on Is Ford about to reinvent the bicycle derailleur?
Electronic shifting is already a thing, and they make it work pretty well with servos.
gbrown··on New features coming in Julia 1.7
That makes sense.
gbrown··on Direct detection of dark energy: the XENON1T excess and future prospects
That would be an alternate explanation for the phenomena described by dark matter though, dark energy is about the accelerating expansion of the universe.
gbrown··on New features coming in Julia 1.7
I like Julia a lot, but out of curiosity why are you writing a web server in it? I would 100% reach for Python for that use case.
gbrown··on New features coming in Julia 1.7
I’ve been really enjoying it since 1.6 came out. A lot of the points you raise are perfectly valid, but the speed difference coming from R and python is real (so long as you’re writing computationally intensive programs and not scripts, for which it is a bad tool at the moment). There’s less friction to get performant code compared to writing supplemental functions in C++.

Also, I have to disagree with the unicode issue. The target audience is heavily invested in latex, so typing things like \theta is natural. It also results in code which is more terse compared to writing out all the letters, and at least for me results in a somewhat lower cognitive overhead when implementing algorithms etc.

gbrown··on Firefox vs. Brave: Which is the better browser for you? – Mozilla
Not to mention, if living your ideals is an important part of your own utility function, then yeah - it can be best for you even if it comes with other compromises.

Exactly
gbrown··on Hacker News RSS
If Google reader had never existed, I feel like RSS could have become the foundation of the modern web.
gbrown··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
I’ve had two lightning ports go flaky due to use. I expect that to accelerate now that they’ve infuriatingly removed the 3.5mm Jack.
gbrown··on Ultrawhite BaSO4 Paints and Films for Daytime Radiative Cooling
Came here with the same question, but there’s a good answer elsewhere in the thread that it’s about wavelengths: reflect where the sun is bright, and among those materials find one that is the most absorbent/emissive in the IR.
gbrown··on A Single Fire Killed at Least 10% of the World's Giant Sequoias, Study Says
That’s just not true on any reasonable timescale. Healthy forests absolutely build up organic matter in soil on various timescales, and while the carbon has various residency periods it’s a net sink. Things like forest fires can create charcoals as well, which last a very long time in soil.
gbrown··on High-powered motorcycle vibrations might impact iPhone camera
That’s the sales pitch, but I haven’t seen any evidence. Almost all the sound is projected behind you, where people can already see you (and where high-vis clothing would be more effective than sound anyway, but you don’t see many bikers wearing that).

Anecdotally, the people I’ve known with loud exhaust systems are not what you’d call “safety conscious”.

gbrown··on Quantum mechanics and our part in creating reality
> what is required to cause it to collapse is still not a solved problem

From what I've read, the existence of "collapse" of the wave-function is not established, and not even widely accepted as more than a useful computational tool by practicing physicists.

gbrown··on Who's downloading pirated papers? Everyone (2016)
> but they do not let me subscribe to journals, nor contribute to the library budget.

Not defending the publishing system, but that’s what indirects are for.

gbrown··on Journal of Controversial Ideas
It’s good enough to be submitted as a new Cards Against Humanity prompt.
gbrown··on Journal of Controversial Ideas
That does sound interesting, though I get the impression that many such people simply don't want to bother making their ideas precise enough for publication. For, example Stephen Weinberg says a lot of things and claims to be oppressed/censored. I can't evaluate what he argues, but many who are qualified to do so have basically indicated that it sounds interesting but needs to be systematically documented for real people to actually evaluate.
gbrown··on Journal of Controversial Ideas
I'm not going to bother to read the article because it's pointless, but I must admit I love the title: "Ultimate Meaning: We Don’t Have It, We Can’t Get It, and We Should Be Very, Very Sad"
gbrown··on Partisan attachment: How politics is changing dating and relationships (2020)
X -> doubt

Education is correlated with both low birth rates and liberal political views, and culture surrounding politics and reproduction changes a lot faster than population genetics.

gbrown··on The Orbit of Planet Nine
I mean, based just on the abstract that's not entirely unlike what they're doing, except that they're using GP emulation.
gbrown··on Brazil prisoners reading books to shorten their sentences (2020)
It was long enough ago that I honestly don’t recall whether or not the teacher tried that. I may have just been stubborn lol.
gbrown··on Brazil prisoners reading books to shorten their sentences (2020)
In elementary school we had something like this - we had to read a book from a different genre every month in order to earn a food item for the end of year picnic. I was constantly reading just science fiction, and ended up with only pickle relish, despite reading more than most of the other students. I don’t think the exercise convinced anyone who wasn’t already into it that reading is good and fun.
