gbrindisi··on How I set up new MacBooks
I do this too. Nix is incredible, until it isn’t and then I regret using it so much.

I’ll probably use something dumber for the next machine, and keep nix for servers and local vms.

gbrindisi··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
I like it! How does your stack look like?
gbrindisi··on Self-Hosting DNS
I run coredns with a blocklist, the config is like 4 lines.

What am I missing by not using AdGuard, PiHole and similar?

gbrindisi··on Stop Using Discord
Current gen LLMs are trained on reddit, stackoverflow, etc. Discord is sitting on little data gold mine ready to be sold to train next gen LLMs.
gbrindisi··on Dotfiles: Unofficial Guide to Dotfiles on GitHub
the ultimate bikeshedding with dotfiles is home-manager with nix, an infinite cacophony of deep pain and enlightened pleasure
gbrindisi··on Principles for Keyboard Layouts (2022)
disagree, it is a good keyboard but the thumb cluster is not ergonomic. There is better, especially if you are up to build one yourself with a kit. Otherwise the voyager is already an improvement over the moonlander.
gbrindisi··on Show HN: OpenOrb, a curated search engine for Atom and RSS feeds
sometimes I stumble into stuff I’m sure I’ve already read something about in an article but if I didn’t bookmarked or made a note of it it’s very hard to find again (miniflux flushes content after a certain age)
gbrindisi··on Show HN: OpenOrb, a curated search engine for Atom and RSS feeds
I really like the idea! At some point I put up a miniflux instance and it has surprisingly been a breath of fresh air for my content consumption. What miniflux and my setup lacks is a way to retrieve stuff I read and this OpenOrb might fit the use case... I will try it out!
gbrindisi··on Why I recommend Renovate over any other dependency update tools
I don't understand why Github does not invest more into Dependabot. Everyone need something like this, and Github is positioned to offer the best sca tool there is. And yet... stuff like grouping has only been recently added.

Anyhow, this is useful to rollout dependabot.yaml config at scale: https://github.com/github/evergreen

gbrindisi··on Akira Toriyama has died
yes! still feeling it since when I first read it 20 years ago
gbrindisi··on Fastmail comes up with new plans (incl. Duo and Family)
Right on time, I just got an email from Google Workspace that they are rising prices
gbrindisi··on Tell HN: Just noticed Reddit blocking VPN traffic. Old subdomain still works
I had problem with feeds these last days, turns out it’s cloudflare something something.

Using old reddit worked.

gbrindisi··on Tax, healthcare, immigration: why Dutch people voted for Geert Wilders
how bad of a housing crisis is in the netherlands?

Wherever I look in europe there is a housing crisis for a reason or another.

gbrindisi··on I think GCP is better than AWS (2020)
I did mostly agree with you that GCP is not Google etc etc until a couple weeks ago when they suddenly announced that they will move most of Policy Intelligence under Security Command Center Premium, throwing most of their customers security teams under the bus.
gbrindisi··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
yes, you can “boost” websites you trust more to give them more priority in search results
gbrindisi··on A student-debt bubble fueled a housing bubble
In Italy you can fix for 15,20,30 years (same as other southern european countries?). Notably access to credit here is harder due to to the debt crisis we had after 2008.

In the nordics like Sweden is like Australia, you can fix for a few years at most.

gbrindisi··on Ask HN: Transitioning from game development to cybersecurity. Tips or advice?
Can you elaborate? As someone else in the field I found the advice quite sound
gbrindisi··on GCP offering 200Gb free egress on their Standard Tier
wasn’t that OVH?
gbrindisi··on I found an IT job thanks to this blog
> the employers don’t ask “what you are able to do?”, instead of “what are your credentials/studies”.

I think this is cultural.

Italian culture is hierarchical and trust is built upon relationships, you either need the authority of a good cv or a good network to reap opportunities. (This is quite common in southern europe)

Northern europeans, americans etc are more egalitarian and have a task based approach to build trust, and value ones worth accordingly.

(Of course it’s not always as black and white)

gbrindisi··on I found an IT job thanks to this blog
Congratulazioni Giulio, well deserved! I remember your home setup post dearly, it’s been very inspiring
gbrindisi··on Ask HN: How do you find airline tickets?
Sidenote: if I want to build my little script to find cheap flights on a set of predefined routes... where do I start? It looks like there aren't much open APIs to query in this space
gbrindisi··on What do you think is important for relationships to work out long term?
Avoid scar tissues: https://gist.github.com/gtallen1187/27a585fcf36d6e657db2
gbrindisi··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
In italy the real estate agent can be sidestepped if you know directly the seller, as a consequence the ads they put up are comically balanced to trigger your curiosity but not too much revealing to let you figure out where the place is.

Such a terrible experience as a buyer, i’m baffled this whole charade hasn’t been disrupted by tech already.

gbrindisi··on Comparison of different Lemmy Instances
Infosec folks are welcome to join https://infosec.pub
gbrindisi··on DevOps Is Bullshit (2022)
Same stuff can be said for all the devsecops bullshit vendors are trying to push down the throat of every organization.
gbrindisi··on Sweden's 250-year-old Freedom of the Press Act gets UNESCO status
True that, it also shows in their privacy laws
gbrindisi··on Remote work brings hidden penalty for young professionals, study says
I feel like this is a management problem that needs to be solved. As the context has changed so should management style.
gbrindisi··on AI is taking the jobs of Kenyans who write essays for U.S. college students
I love how all this will enable "SEO professionals" and content marketers to destroy SEO.

Literally sawing the very own branch they are sitting on.

gbrindisi··on Italian government seeks to penalize the use of English words
Racism is everywhere, what I think eludes americans is that in Europe identities are way more tied to nationality rather than ethnicity.
gbrindisi··on Italian government seeks to penalize the use of English words
While this might be true to some extent, a huge difference between the US and Europe is that in the EU the concept of identity revolves more around nationality than ethnicity/race.
