I guess you’re proposing eliminating the h1b program to raise wages. That would maybe work but our companies would theoretically be less competitive globally. If we’re going to allow immigration based on professional skills then these people should be fast tracked to having the same employment rights as natives otherwise it creates a subclass of workers that depress wages because those that belong to that group will be too risk adverse to ask for more money knowing that they’ll likely have to leave the country if they get let go.
Better for everyone because the talented H1B employee is no longer shackled to their employer and can leave demanding a higher wage and raising wages for everyone.
It’s also what’s called a high prestige low pay career which is by definition exclusionary of poor and middle income people, so the news makers are further and further detached from regular people.
This is not the problem. We should not castigate people who want to build homes and earn a rightful profit from that endeavor. The problem is the undemocratic process that is the town hearing. It is unreasonable to expect working families and young adults to attend week day, day time hearings to state their position on the construction of new homes or anything else for that matter. The atrocities of urban renewal by Robert Moses and his followers in the 50s and 60s which wrecked many urban and black urban communities, many of which still haven’t recovered, led us into this mess. The antidote was that all movements towards progress must be debated by citizens (mostly seniors as they are the only ones with the luxury of time) in a hearing format. The citizens able to participate are most likely not going to live long enough to see the results of their positions anyways. It’s a disaster.
What we do is enforce that everyone keeps one ticket in JIRA as in progress and use a timekeeping add on. The tickets role up to epics and initiatives. I review each top level initiative and epic with finance and they deem it capitalizable or not. Then we add a haircut. It’s really not that much work. We have an hour meeting monthly to work it out but I make sure to exclude my mainline engineers. They don’t need that
I also prefer the time change system we have. I recognize there are obvious draw backs, but echoing a sibling comment about London. I’m confident if we stopped changing clocks annually, we’d resume the practice in a few years. It is just better to have more afternoon sun in the summer it makes being active with friends and family much easier. If we didn’t change to standard time in the winter, kids would be going to school in pitch black night in most of the country.
This is no joke. Run an e-commerce site and have been generally skeptical of WAFs but had to sign up for a bot mitigation service because it became out of control two years ago. These bots were even executing JavaScript and loading third party scripts which caused additional fees from these vendors. We went with Datadome and are pretty happy with it but I wish I didn’t need to!
Has this actually been a problem? We’ve been using launch darkly for years and if they do have an outage (which is really really rare) the flag will be set to the default value. It’s also very very cheap, maybe $500 a month.
Well given that intense heat wave that hit the UK a couple summers ago where the country went from green to brown from space, I’d worry about forest fires
Whenever I encounter a pull request that I find many issues with, I ask to meet with the engineer and review it one on one. More than half of the workplace problems engineers have is due to their introverted nature and their refusal to get on a teams/zoom call to explain their issues and get resolution. Comments are a really poor mechanism for teaching programming best practices.
It’s not just superstition. Air conditioned air can be bad for you if you’re not maintaining it. It is also drying so it can bother your throat, eyes, and skin. It might make it easier to transmit COVID though that might just be in door air. I definitely prefer comfortable outdoor air to air conditioned air.
I don’t think that’s what the GP is saying. It’s more like beverages exist but certain ones are worse for you (like alcoholic ones) than others. It’s what’s being consumed that is important not its medium.
I don’t know if I agree with that just that you’re characterization is off. I think the medium is the message.
I’m not an expert but I could definitely see an entomological connection between putto in Italian meaning castrated orphan if what the above poster says is true and puto in Spanish which is often a slur against gay men.
I did this when I accidentally enrolled in the astronomy 101 class for astronomers when I meant to enroll in the “fun” astronomy class for non-majors. The professor was extremely uninterested in teaching and I decided to just do the assignments and stop going to class. Still got an A.
That is just not true. Apple is the most valuable company in the world, with the largest market cap. Steve Jobs died twelve years ago. The Apple Watch and Air Pods have been huge successes, so has their push into services. They also have the largest profit margins of any manufacturer. They are incredibly well run and have not lost their way. They also didn’t have to have massive layoffs as they didn’t over hire in the pandemic.
I do, but I eat beans frequently, with out the same effect. Usually I get a burrito bowl. The same ingredients elsewhere do not have the same effect. I don’t know. I know people love it and I can see why. I even go back
Everytime I eat chipotle an hour or two later I get a sharp stomach pain and then an intense bathroom episode. My partner and I call it Chi-poo-poo because of it. I always swear to never go back but then do. No other fast food does that to me
It's generally not done because it's a security issue as an attacker could register before you with your email and gain access to your personal info (billing and shipping address and maybe last four of credit card). What would be best if the eCommerce site would send you an email to confirm your email address to unlock your guest checkout orders. That's a fairly complicated flow for most eCommerce outfits so I think they just default to not show guest orders.
I think the best thing you can do is resistance training exercise. Also going from a wide keyboard (full size Apple keyboard with number pad) to a narrow keyboard (narrow Apple Keyboard no number pad) worked for me. For a while I was doing the exercise in the video below and it helped me but I think just regular weight training can do wonders. I mostly just do shoulder, back, arms, and chest exercises and still haven’t had the pain I used to have. Hope you find something that works for you!
Absolutely! I had a great time in Paris and felt fortunate I was able to go visit. I was just commenting about the metro system which could use some UX attention and consistency on an article about the Paris Metro. I hope my comment doesn’t dissuade anyone from going!
I loved visiting paris this summer but was surprised by how archaic and slow the machines were too buy tickets. I also found it amusing how there are at least three different interfaces/machine styles throughout the system. I made the mistake of buying a one way ticket to Versailles. I missed the train back home although I was twenty minutes early because the line to buy a ticket took forever. At least two minutes per customer
Jira drives me crazy. Why do I need to mark an epic as closed two different ways? Why is it really difficult to see what tickets were in a closed sprint? Why is it so slow or why does it sometimes get in infinite reload loop? Features randomly break like the ability to create tickets from confluence. My company is locked in and I doubt we would change, I just wish Atlassian focused on performance and consistency
I completely agree about the unimportant details. It frustratingly cuts up a long stretch of freeway into alerts to stay left or right at unimportant exits. This often encourages me to be on the wrong side of the highway especially if it’s telling me to stay left at a small road exit when a mile later I need to be in the right lanes for a freeway split. It’s definitely gotten worse this past year
I sometimes call Gen Z the troll generation. I feel like they never knew life without Internet and so they naturally choose the most inflammatory answer as default. I heard a survey of Gen Zers that something like half reported themselves as gender non binary. I think it’s more protest than anything
I actually agree with this. We’ve really struggled with Apple Pay. It’s partly our payment processor’s fault but the limited documentation from Apple and the strict limitations we’ve encountered trying to debug Apple Pay has taken us way longer than it should have to get right.
