gbaygon··on What Car Thieves Think of the Club (2010)
Your security device won't work in South America were 95% of all cars have manual transmissions and I think the same ratio applies to Europe.
gbaygon··on GitHub launches Actions, its workflow automation tool
There is a mention in the features page* about it:

  action "Deploy to Production" {
    needs = "Provision Database"
    uses = "actions/aws/ec2"
    runs = "aws deploy --prod"
  }
*see "Configure as code" in https://github.com/features/actions
gbaygon··on Show HN: 2048.cpp – Play 2048 in directly your terminal
I will throw another option, very lightweight: licecap, works on win and osx, from the original dev of winamp!

gbaygon··on Traveling the World on a Third World Passport
In fact an Argentinian passport is really good for travelling. You don’t need a visa for the European Union, South and Central America, most Asia, and quick online visas for Australia and New Zeland. The only main visa needed is for USA (and Canada) but it takes one interview and is not that difficult to get. There are far worse passports to have believe me.
gbaygon··on Jorge Luis Borges Interview (1977)
Please mods update the title, there is a typo in the name which is Jorge, without the final s.
gbaygon··on Linux is Obsolete (1992)
If anybody can provide an alternative source for the text thanks in advance. It requires a google login for reading.
gbaygon··on VS Code can do that?
I had, but this was several version back, couldn't find any info of what was failing and also waited a major version update before doing the switch. Switching editors always causes stress. That's why it's hard to gain users back once you made a mistake on this (very competitive) field. I would only try VS Code again if Atom messes up, no matter what new micro site Microsoft PR puts online.

Edit-to-add: with your downvote you are invited to explain why/if I'm wrong.

gbaygon··on VS Code can do that?
I don't know how is it now, but I've used it for a couple of months for web dev on my mac and switched to Atom when noticed my cpu was 70%+ of usage all the time. I suspected it was because of the typescript plugin, but honestly I don't care Atom doesn't do that and I'm happy with it.
gbaygon··on What Did Ancient Romans Do Without Toilet Paper?
It really surprised me while visiting USA the first time that they weren't available. They are pretty standard in my home country (Argentina) and every house has one.
gbaygon··on Basic Laws of Human Stupidity (1976)
The definition of stupidity is "being lack of intelligence", and the definition of intelligence is "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills".

So maybe a stupid person can only be detected by observing said person during a period of time and measuring the ability to learn from mistakes and update behavior. If the variation on behavior is zero we can say we spotted a stupid person. But, if the variation is positive we are dealing with somebody "learning" and maybe we can "help".

gbaygon··on The Cryptocurrency Singularity
I thought the same thing, the core idea of this article is in direct opposition of its conclusion.

Bitcoin is going up in value, and according to the market predictions it will go way higher, so it's deflationary.

Bitcoin holders will prefer to spend cash money to bitcoins anytime in speculation of future gains.

I see bitcoin more of a speculative investment at the moment, than a type of currency. Only the ones that are riding the bitcoin trains seems to think this is the future of money. Outside that bubble nobody really uses it.

gbaygon··on Extracting Chinese Hard Subs from a Video, Part 1
Makes sense, thanks. I went straight to the technical details and missed that part.
gbaygon··on Extracting Chinese Hard Subs from a Video, Part 1
Legitimate question: why would you want the first video (hardcoded subs) if you have a second stream without them, better resolution maybe?
gbaygon··on Twilio Functions – Public Beta
they do have a testing environment where you can send SMS to only registered and verified phone numbers
gbaygon··on Show HN: Webhook – A lightweight configurable tool written in Go
I think that using some DSL rather that JSON will make it more obscure, since a lot more people are familiar with JSON coming from front-end development and/or Node. If you want a big userbase and more potential contributors is good to stick to what everybody is using. (Reading my own answer I would be swearing at anyone that told me that about an XML config file a couple of years ago)

Edit: redaction

gbaygon··on Like Tweeting, but You Can't Use the Letter E
Personally I find interesting the general idea that adding constraints to a system leads to creative outlets, forcing the participants to break entablished thinking patterns. The fun stuff here is not the content, but the alternative paths the writer has to take to convey the message.
gbaygon··on Tay – Microsoft A.I. chatbot
Having "zero chill" seems to refer to somebody that is reckless about their behaviour and/or doesn't choose their words carefully.

I don't dare to quote my sources here on HN (Urban Dictionary et al).

If somebody has a better definition please share.

gbaygon··on I've Just Liberated My Modules
I think he means a solution to the current problem of the packages being replaced with malicious ones, not the problem with npm not supporting package signatures.
gbaygon··on Ask HN: What's the most useful online course you have watched?
I recommend this course whenever I have the opportunity.

I started iOS programming about a year ago and it really helped me with grasping how to use Auto Layout in XCode, once you learn that the API is easy to pickup if you have some experience in mobile development.

Swift is a pleasure to use.

gbaygon··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful software?
Write the dates/times as string in ISO 8601 format.
gbaygon··on Why Are Hundreds of Harvard Students Studying Ancient Chinese Philosophy?
Thanks for the reference, I submitted it only because I found it interesting but didn't bother to search it.

The duplicate detector should have missed it because of the ?singlepage=true

gbaygon··on The Bugs in Our Mindware
generally I've found that an article (bad or good) sets the topic for really interesting discussions and points of views here in HN
gbaygon··on Show HN: CrashBreak – Reproduce exceptions as failing tests in Ruby
The page is very uninformative, I had to take clues from all around the site to realize this is ruby only. Also is not clear how it works, should I send a dump of the crash to a external server?

As a side note, it would be very useful to have a tool like this to debug iOS apps (and maybe integrated with crashlytics, I don't know if it's possible).

gbaygon··on How the Gut's "Second Brain" Influences Mood and Well-Being (2010)
There is a lot of knowledge about this belly brain to be gained from studying the japanese arts (as in Dō).

Zazen and Aikido come to my mind, but all the Japan's traditional disciplines seems to center around the development of the Hara [1].

gbaygon··on Quality Is Fractal
About a month ago it was posted an article[1] about why Van Halen requested the infamous no brown M&M's clause in their concert contracts, it struck me as a practical way of measuring overall quality on a complex situattion.

gbaygon··on TDD, Straw Men, and Rhetoric
fair enough
gbaygon··on TDD, Straw Men, and Rhetoric
> You can flag whatever you'd like, but

No, you can't. If you flag articles just because you are tired to see some topic in the front page your flagging habilities will be removed (happened to me).

gbaygon··on AdRoll Raises $70M
Title is confusing at first sight, company name should be AdRoll, not Adroll.
gbaygon··on Let's build a webinar tool that doesn't suck
...we need the email to inform about the current progress and select future beta users.

So why don't you hint about it in the landing page?

My process was:

  1. Open the page
  2. Saw "build your own webinar tool"
  3. Saw email field
  4. Saw join button
and thought: "If I enter my email in this box this will give me access to some kind of personalizable webinar tool, but I don't know if I need this yet", then closed the page.

You need to rework the landing page so the visitor knows what they are doing exactly when they click the "JOIN NOW!" button.

gbaygon··on Kinematics Bodice
Who would own the data? let's say that your body measures and proportions gets linked to your credit card number, this data could be used to target advertising to you in websites where you have used the same credit card.

If you are overweight it could show ads of gyms/treatments/diet-food; not that there is anything wrong with that, BUT think about the new industry that opens up for penis enlargenment spammers.

Living the joke behind, I think is worth to think about the implications if/when something like this gets implemented.
