gazrogers··on The Open Web Needs You Now
I agree it's certainly not a panacea for all the ills of the current system, but as the syntaxes converge it could provide a way for web devs to use one prefix without breaking the web or forcing minority browsers to adopt the prefixes of the majority browser.

And it is often the case that you're using an experimental style that's only available on one browser family which is then adopted at a later date by other browsers. This method would mean that as soon as other browsers adopted the style it would render without any changes or additions required on the web site.

gazrogers··on The Open Web Needs You Now
It'd be nice if the browsers could adopt a standard prefix for experimental styles (-exp- maybe) which is then replaced by the browser prefix before being used - so in Chrome -exp-text-size-adjust would become -webkit-text-size-adjust and in Firefox it would become -moz-text-size-adjust. That way we can escape the necessity of doing one rule for each prefix (-webkit- -moz- -o- -ms- etc.) and just have one. Browsers could just ignore the rules which they haven't implemented yet and web devs would not be able to cause problems by targeting just one family of browsers. It could probably be implemented by a quick text replace before parsing (the c++ equivalent of s/-exp-/-webkit-/g) and would shrink the size of some stylesheets considerably.
gazrogers··on Hacker News rips off Reddit or so Mashable claims...
I just checked the wayback machine and Reddit appears first in mid 2005, HN in Feb 2007 (though the article with id 1 here seems to have been posted in October 2006). It's fair to say that Reddit wasn't inspired by HN.
gazrogers··on Why You Shouldn't Use Twitter Bootstrap
Out of the 7 sites on the first page, only 2 have made any attempt to fight the DIVitis that's inherent in Bootstrap. As I've said before, this is promoting poorly structured non-semantic HTML.
gazrogers··on Building Twitter bootstrap
You're confusing my reference to DIVitis with my comment about layout in the HTML. The examples providied by the Bootstrap page are stuffed with unnecessary DIVs. I'm a web developer, so I know that DIVs exists to provide containers which add no semantic meaning to the page. But putting classes into your HTML which say class='row' or class='leftcolumn' means that you can't just change the CSS in order to change the layout - which is the whole purpose of CSS in the first place. All grid systems suffer from this weakness.

Consider this example based on the Bootstrap examples - you have three boxes containing stuff within a DIV with a class of 'row'. At some point in the future you decide to turn this into a column. Easy to do in the CSS - just change the width to the with of one item, and they'll stack on top of each other. BUT, now you have a column labelled 'row' in your HTML. This is a fairly simple to rectify example, but this problem is pervasive in grid systems.

Bootstrap - spreading DIVitis to the masses and placing layout into HTML everywhere. We might just as well go back to tables for layout.

gazrogers··on MITx positions to offer certification for completing courses online
Interesting that as US institutions are ramping up their online education offerings, the UK government is cutting funding for the Open University (open.ac.uk) which is probably one of the pioneers in the area. A microcosm of the UK's involvement in technology in general I think.

Of course, if you took away the other 6,999,999,930 away, the 70 that "matter" would find life infinitely harder. So perhaps we aren't as pointless the title suggests.

Yes, damn those selfish teachers and nurses for choosing to something that they a) are good at, and b) enjoy.

Perhaps we should force children to do the same job as their parents when they grow up to maintain the correct distribution of workers to jobs?

gazrogers··on UK Government plans to create a "Silicon Valley" in London
It's hard to express how angry this makes me feel.

They've just supposedly slashed public spending which will result in the loss of thousands of public sector jobs - mainly in the less affluent north - and now they're planning to invest some of the 'savings' made from that action into the already over-invested south. Taking from the poor to give to the wealthy.

There are cities in the UK other than London. Birmingham and Manchester for instance.

I am seething.
