Most of what you're saying about AA is false. 4 of the 12 steps mention God. And if you look deeper into the material, God is in reference to a Higher Power or "Power greater than ourselves."

Some examples of a Higher Power can include: a sponsor, the group in general, a (big G or little g) god, a door knob. The principle is about believing in something greater than yourself.

edit: AA has its roots in Christianity, however being in AA doesn't mean you have to be a Christian or a theist.

gavingmiller··on Did porn warp me forever?
Typically someone in AA will say that they're a recovering alcoholic vs an alcoholic. There is a distinct difference.

gavingmiller··on Why I Gave Up A Million Dollar Consultancy
Is it really worth $1000? Yes it is.

Here's some simple math for you. It would have taken my business partner (he took the course, not me) more than 10 hours to find all of the advice Brennan shared. He can bill out 10 hours to a client for $1000. Therefore is it worth it to pay someone to gather all this advice and package it in a way that allows him to apply it? Absolutely.

It took me a long time to realize many businesses are looking to exchange money for time. They have more money than they do time. It's a hard notion to understand when you don't have more money than time. I suspect you can't truly know it until you reach the point of being able to make that decision yourself.

"the only people that get rich by these schemes are the people that are selling them"

Counter point: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4986168

My company is making money with Brennan's Consultancy Class and it paid for itself literally within a week. Brennan's advice has significantly impacted my company's revenue in 2012, and will continue to do so in 2013.

In a nutshell yes.

We also bundled in some additional value added services to that retainer.

To counter some of the negative sentiment around "selling to developers" I'd like to share a bit of what Brennan's advice has done for my consultancy business. One of my partners took Brennan's Consultancy Masterclass and here are some of the outcomes:

* Took two of our "do work once a year" clients into a monthly retainer relationships which will bring in an additional $20,000+ revenue annually.

* Changed our estimating process to value-based, fixed bids. Projects previously estimated at $5,000ish are now closer to $8,000ish, and prospect clients are biting just as hard... harder actually.

* Hard data: two new clients are in the door grossing an additional $6,200 above what we originally would have grossed... and are both interested in ongoing retainers :)

Brennan knows his stuff. His advice has moved the needle on my business. And we've only implemented a fraction of that advice.

You bring up a good point with: "Impressive, but somewhat less success on actual apps". For the longest time, I thought the path to success was:

* Launch an app

* Quit my day job the next day

* Live life on the fast lane forever more.

This is simply not true of apps. From what I'm seeing in those who have shared their revenue openly (Brennan, Patrick, Amy, Nathan), it takes about 2 years (+/- 1 year) to get to the place where an app is providing a living income.

Software is a long game. I've only been able to have the attention span of 3-6 months. So I lost that game. Here's to 2013 and changing my attention span! :D

gavingmiller··on I don't want to download your app
No, you're right. However a lot gets read into tone when a message is short. Adding "Sent from X" allows the reader context.
gavingmiller··on Why Canada's productivity has been underestimated for decades
Completely agree with you. It's a good time to be a software developer! :D
gavingmiller··on Why Canada's productivity has been underestimated for decades
Anecdotally that appears to be correct. My company tried to sponsor a graphic designer to come up from the States. We were denied because the gov't said there were more than enough skilled graphic designers available.
gavingmiller··on Sikuli: Write scripts using GUI buttons and screenshots
I wrote a blog post about Sikuli a long while ago: http://randomtype.ca/blog/a-look-at-sikuli/
gavingmiller··on On logic in a Rails app
I mostly agree, with the exception of the initializer, something I haven't seen put to much use in controllers. The main thrust of my question was, do you have any links/examples for a DI based rails controller? Other than your "in theory" refactoring?
gavingmiller··on On logic in a Rails app
What you're talking about looks like (is...) dependency injection. Rails is a response to the Java FactorySingletonWidgetFactoryClass culture, so the question is does DI benefit Rails, or simply allows us to pontificate about our code? Which is what DHH is arguing against.

In my experience DI has been a great pattern for writing testable code, so do you have any resources relevant to DI in Rails, and why it (DI) is more beneficial than the OPs argument of a Service based architecture? (other than a simple google search like I did?)

I think someone needs to plug how awesome the Destroy All Software screencasts are (referenced in the post.) They are well worth their value, and have made me a better developer: https://www.destroyallsoftware.com/screencasts

I'm certain there's a bad date analogy somewhere in there too! :D

Additional context: Tiny Habits is a free course about learning how to make habits like the OP talked about. It teaches the habit of habit making. Highly recommend.
gavingmiller··on Ask HN: Are you alone in San Francisco on Thanksgiving?
Once had someone give me an id that was simply a second id with the face cut out and his id taped in behind it. Worked too until they separated handing it back to him.
gavingmiller··on RubyMotion API Reference
Yeah, I've used dynamic method calls in Objective-C and I just Ruby easier to use when doing those types of tasks.
gavingmiller··on RubyMotion API Reference
My position, I've done a fair number of iOS apps and am well versed in Ruby. The meta-programming aspect of RubyMotion is what appealed to me. There's a ton of boilerplate in iOS that could be eliminated. I attempted to migrate an iOS app to RubyMotion. I stopped because the debug tools weren't mature enough. It was a lot of fun to work with when everything worked! Like everything in life I suppose...

I will go back to RubyMotion once it has better debug facilities. And I won't do an app re-write; I'll do a new app. HTH. :D

gavingmiller··on What Programmers Want Is Less Stupid And More Programming
That was my thought when reading the article. Replace programmer with accountant, marketer, designer, etc and the article would read the same. As much as programmers think we're special snowflakes, there's always another group (see previous list) that thinks they're special too and that no one else "gets" how they work.
gavingmiller··on How I made Stripe as easy to use as Paypal in 5 days
Just a bit of feedback on your test forms: Your credit card number doesn't chunk the credit card into segments, making the input really difficult. And the sliding text when fields get focused is distracting.

Also as a question. Does my subdomain have to be nickw.easybill.co or will it be specific to my account? (not clearly stated)

gavingmiller··on $15,000 In Income From An EBook, How I Did It
I'll back up Brennan 100% on his claims. I've _successfully_ raised my rates +30/hr after reading his ebook. The advice was relevant, pointed, and easy to implement. The book paid for itself in the first week I owned it.
gavingmiller··on Ramit Sethi and Patrick McKenzie on Getting Your First Consulting Client
Plug for Brennan's plug: This book is amazing. I've increased rates by +$30/hr with the advice in this book. If you send invoices to clients BUY THIS BOOK.
gavingmiller··on What Excites Me About RubyMotion
I agree with your viewpoint for different reasons.

I like RubyMotion _because_ it is for iOS. I've developed for Android and iOS and much prefer iOS.

I dislike RubyMotion because the current debug tool chain/error messaging is so weak. I can't jump into the code and fix it. Many times wishing it was open source for that reason.

So for the time being I've shelved usage of RubyMotion, and hope to return to it once the tooling improves.

gavingmiller··on Realtime Web Messaging over Animated Gifs
Our Canadian office managed to convince a couple of team members in our American office that we ran on a 20 hour clock, with 72 minutes in an hour. That was fun for a week.

re 5: SR&ED (the program I assume you're referencing) is 'free' money. If my company can make back 3/4 of a developers salary by doing "proposal writing" why wouldn't they do that?

+1 it's playing like this that inspires ideas in others - should it be so prominent, maybe not. Furthermore, it's going to get linked a ton which is great for Nissan's brand.
