gardnr··on GitHub's new dashboard experience now the default
Over the last four years, GitHub announcing a change or new feature has generally led to a worse experience, for me at least.
gardnr··on Qwen 3.8 27B available on Cerebras at 1500 tokens/s
Last time I got one, I had to log into a Discord server and wait for "the drop" and IIRC Daniel Kim was giving them out based on who was there at the time. They were gone in less than a minute. This was ~8 months ago.
gardnr··on Qwen 3.8 27B available on Cerebras at 1500 tokens/s
They make a giant inference chip. Their inference service is basically just advertising for their core value prop: hardware.

The CEO was on Gradient Dissent a couple years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNXebAQ6igs

gardnr··on Qwen 3.8 27B available on Cerebras at 1500 tokens/s
I used their Coding Plan for a few months. It is genuinely difficult to keep up with the models. The output is so fast. Qwen 3.8 27B is likely one of the strongest models they've hosted so far.

Edit: it looks like this is only available on a API token pricing. Does anyone know if they have rolled out prompt caching yet? It used to get pretty expensive for agentic coding tasks with no prompt caching.

gardnr··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
I remember in 2010 when Chrome made the web so much better for everyone. All the early adopters were singing its praise and encouraging friends and family to use it.

Now, I encourage people to use anything but Chrome. Firefox is really great these days.

gardnr··on Norway Shrugged (2024)
This article is from 2024. They can defer this tax now. [1]

> High income with short work days, free healthcare, free daycare, free education and beyond.

If the author doesn't value these for the people around them then perhaps he should move somewhere else.

gardnr··on Harness Engineering
Interesting: I initially confused smol for https://github.com/huggingface/smolagents
gardnr··on Show HN: RealDiff – runtime behavior diffing for pull requests (six languages)
Don’t run your responses through an LLM. People prefer to read your genuine words, even if it may include some incorrect English.
gardnr··on Harness Engineering
That looks like a “Deep Research” report generated by an LLM, not a summary.

gardnr··on RAG Is Simpler Than You Think
Nice work.
gardnr··on RAG Is Simpler Than You Think
That is the approach I would take today. Late Interaction is worth a look. Evals are necessary.
gardnr··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces

gardnr··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich (2023)
I want a system that taxes things we don't want (unproductive rent-seeking) and doesn't tax things we do want (productive stuff e.g. income tax).

I don't want to be personally compensated. I just want to live in a society where people's basic needs are easily met: clothes, food, medicine, housing. The current landscape is, by the day, increasingly dystopian.

gardnr··on Qwen 3.8
It's hard to say what their motivation is. The Chinese firms seem to be working hard to commoditize intelligence which may be the most effective way to debase American frontier labs. And yeah: it also happens to be really good for humanity.
gardnr··on [dead]
No GH contributors. New HN account. Vibe coded in 5 commits over the last two week.

Interesting choice of model:

gardnr··on Samsung Health app threatens data deletion if users opt out AI training
This is like Google Ultra for personal accounts. I signed up to see what it was like and then assumed I would be able to disable training on my data as a paid customer. The only way to disable training on paid personal accounts is to disable history (no chat logs) which makes the service much less useful for me.

For Google Workspace accounts that use the Ultra plan you can disable training while retaining history. I didn't bother signing up again. It is user-hostile.

gardnr··on LARP – Revenue infrastructure for serious founders
I too was nervous until I clicked through and had a read.
gardnr··on SearXNG: A free internet metasearch engine
It has a JSON mode that you need to enable in settings and then you can create a simple python script to interact with it or have the agent use `curl` and `jq` to interact with it.

It's at the bottom of this page: https://docs.searxng.org/admin/settings/settings_search.html

gardnr··on Popping the GPU Bubble
Different bubble than the one I was hoping for.

This appears to be different than the recent "Speculative Pipeline Decoding" paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.30852

gardnr··on LongCat-2.0, a large-scale MoE model with 1.6T total and 48B Active
Dwarkesh Patel has AI/ML guests on his podcast. BoorishBears may have been referring to the Jensen Huang episode where they discuss TPUs: https://youtu.be/Hrbq66XqtCo?t=982
gardnr··on LongCat-2.0, a large-scale MoE model with 1.6T total and 48B Active
> The training and deployment of LongCat-2.0 are built on large-scale clusters of tens of thousands of AI ASIC superpods. Compared to the mature Nvidia GPU ecosystem, the supporting software community is still less developed. We have therefore put significant effort into building a stable, secure, and scalable infrastructure.

This is the real news story. It looks like they may have used Huawei Ascend 910C chips: https://nitter.net/teortaxesTex/status/2071708141037781407#m

gardnr··on Ask HN: Conflicted about founding engineer role
It really depends on your personal perspective on life. Consider the two statement and which one aligns more with yourself:

1. "It's better to regret something that you have done instead of something that you haven't done."

2. "I want to retire comfortably with a high level of confidence."

People in my life always advised me to follow the highest paying job. I'm not sure that was the right advice given my circumstances. It's really up to you.

gardnr··on If Claude Fable stops helping you, you'll never know
This really sucks. Given how bad their regexes were in their leaked code, I am guessing this will get triggered all the time when I am fine tuning a model or doing work with datasets. The fact that there's no feedback means I can't trust the tools.
gardnr··on Open Code Review – An AI-powered code review CLI tool
How snobbish was the CEO acting?
gardnr··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
Just in case anyone is thinking about trying it: 25g seems pretty high. It’s worth it to review what that means for the rest of your body before starting this regime. Kidneys are really useful organs to have working.
gardnr··on Elevated error rates on Opus 4.7
Are you using Opus? Sonnet remains as useful as it was while Opus efficacy and token burn rate has soured over the last 4 months.
gardnr··on The hypocrisy of cyberlibertarianism
I have a suspicion most Libertarians are actually something else but who haven't realized it yet. When you really dig into it: idea of private property (as in owning land and charging people rent for using it) is akin to slavery (owning people and extracting labor from them). The pre-colonial indigenous structures of managing societies were much more aligned with my internal values but they are poorly defined in modern vernacular and we don't have a good "common vocabulary" to talk about how we might want to do things in a different way.
gardnr··on Agents need control flow, not more prompts
This is straight outta 2023:

Agents aren't reliable; use workflows instead.
