ganzsz··on RAM: the forgotten history (2024)
This is also true for spinning rust, e.g., magnetic drum memory.
ganzsz··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
The investigation into both Netanyahu, and American soldiers in Afghanistan.
ganzsz··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
It's not December yet?
ganzsz··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
The most used banners at least have a quick way of dismissing without opting in. When the cases against too obvious dark patterns started that fixed itself at least.
ganzsz··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
What fixed YouTube for me by disabling and removing all history. The only thing that works is the subscriptions tab and search. The only shorts I get are from subscriptions, so I'm through them in a few minutes and have to choose a real video.
ganzsz··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Nobody is going to watch a worldcup if south America joins this boycott.
ganzsz··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
> any government

Proceeds to give example of one of the most oligarchical countries that ignore financial transparency laws on an industrial scale.

ganzsz··on Why Vanilla JavaScript
It starts as simple crud, but then product introduces a business rule where some fields need to be hidden when another option is selected somewhere. O, but not when this checked, etc. Having a reactive framework when this happens is very much needed to keep all these effects working without a lot of vanilla JS.

This can be solved later, but is a lot harder when you have an entire application that needs to bee kept working, and almost trivial if you started with some reactivity built in.

ganzsz··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
I don't know what the companies want with it. But they'll try to hide the logs in discovery for a lawsuit. [1]As nyt found out.

ganzsz··on AI changes the economics of software rewrites
We sold a large rewrite to be able to use llms. Our code is such a mess that an llm has trouble implementing new features. (maintainability is still a must, even when vibe coding). So we got a green light to use clean patterns that a llm could extend easily.

Of coarse the requirement of using more Ai came from management.

ganzsz··on Frontier AI has broken the open CTF format
I can passionately tell about professional projects.
ganzsz··on Officials Claim Drone Incursion Led to Shutdown of El Paso Airport
Who forms the cabinet though? In a two party system - where one party seems to be built around a personality cult - cabinet can be filled with rubber stampers
ganzsz··on Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Edit is ported to win11 and edit(.exe) should work in your shell of choice.

ganzsz··on I miss thinking hard
For me personally, the problem is my teammates. The ability or will to critically think, or investigate existing tools in the codebase seems to disappear. Too often now I have to send back a PR where something is fixed using novel implementations instead of the single function call using existing infrastructure.
ganzsz··on Replacing JavaScript with Just HTML
Maybe because it is easier to track one library, react and jsx. I wouldn't use xmlhttprequest since the request api exist.
ganzsz··on Search tool that only returns content created before ChatGPT's public release
Tbh, this sounds like a Google Easter egg.
ganzsz··on .NET 10
Removing free omnisharp was the worst
ganzsz··on Check Out These Self-Soldering Sleeves from World War II
The NASA Workmanship's guide linked in a sibling instructs to stagger multiple splices. I think that would help with this problem.
ganzsz··on Just because you can doesn't mean you should: the <meter> element
My sister drives one of those. And I'm always jealous of this when I'm sitting next to her.
ganzsz··on A Vacuum Tube Single Board 1-Bit Computer [video]
IIRC he has a few thousand of these 6AU6 tubes that he got in bulk. So he has designed most of his tube applications around these tubes.

About why to use tubes? I don't know, entertainment purpuoses I guess. His ventures into computing using tubes entertain some at least[0].

ganzsz··on Habitual GPS use negatively impacts spatial memory during self-guided navigation
> [..] a strong tendency to make you do stupid, dangerous stuff in traffic any time there's the slightest ambiguity or delay in the phone's instructions to you.

This is why in the Netherlands you are tought to drive using a satnav, and it can even be required to navigate using one during your driving exam.

ganzsz··on Americans are on the move, but their stuff doesn’t always follow
Had a lecturer that made a specific clicking sound at the beginning of every sentence, never had any problem with it. Until a classmate pointed it out, made it almost impossible to follow this man's lectures afterwards
ganzsz··on I bought 300 emoji domain names from Kazakhstan and built an email service
I sometimes run into sites that won't even allow a + in the name part of an email address.

And yes, I use gmail and the + functionality extensively.

ganzsz··on US Senators call on FCC to raise broadband definition to 100Mbs down and up
I believe the definition of broadband is mostly relevant when future grants and contracts are handed out by gov. So could help for new business, but I don't think it will be used in existing connections.

But to me it is not entirely clear in the article.

ganzsz··on Flexible working shows 55% high performers compared to 36% for 40 hours/week
I feel you. I just started working for a smaller company where I can work 4 days. And I have to say, my midweekend(Wednesday off) is amazing.

Still able to pay the bills, but I'm working to live, not living to work. I really hope this option is possible when I decide to go for a new challenge in a few years.

I really like what you try to achieve with the platform. Will keep an eye on it.

ganzsz··on Amsterdam displaces London as Europe's top stocks centre after Brexit
Games that lean on conversation, Assassin's Creed for example, will sometimes have Dutch subtitles. Those helped me when I was younger, also enabling English subtitles in series and games.

But tbh a big thing is the exposure at a young age, I tried to do the same thing with Spanish series but a new language simply doesn't stick as well as it did 15 years ago.

ganzsz··on Factorio Future Plans
Thanks man, there goes my free time.

Why did it have to have an Android version. Nice game though!

ganzsz··on Me and ADHD
Saving this comment as a reminder of how my brain works.
ganzsz··on Bill and Melinda Gates: America’s Top Farmland Owner
To me it is clear that Gates was prepared by a host of lawyers, which makes sense.

But the interrogator doesn't grasp the subject entirely as well, I too would want clarification to the question if a content provider uses IE. You could ask a helpful question, e.g. Do you mean if they develop sites specifically for IE?

But That is not how you go about a deposition, you're not there to help people build a case against you.

ganzsz··on College campuses are designed at human-scale – cities can be too
Same here in most Dutch cities, I myself don't live near the city centre but still have a self contained neighbourhood with a ton of schools shops and other facilities. And the public transport is good enough to be able to reach the entire metropolitan area for a job.

Would be a nice research if someone could test different cities and neighbourhoods indeed.
