ganarajpr··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it awesome? Please include URL
I worked on this a couple of weeks back and its almost complete - but I thought I would share it with the world.

Good for JSX projects transpiled using Babel

https://github.com/ganarajpr/gotofile-chrome

Its a set of 3 plugins ( chrome plugin, atom plugin and Babel plugin) that allow you to jump to the right JS file in your editor directly from chrome. I was thinking how would View Source look if it was implemented in this new world of Front End JS. . This should provide a more seamless experience of going from the Browser to your editor. Would love any feedback on the experience or any enhancement requests.

ganarajpr··on Show HN: Artificial Intelligence for generating React Components
This is a very early release of the AI Assisted way of generating any UI components.

https://atom.io/packages/image2react

The demo video can be found here :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iiKl0BB6ho

The current version ( very early preview version ) supports only UI component identification with the prospects of future versions including automatic layout and styling.

ganarajpr··on AI-assisted code generation for React
Hey thank you . Sent you an email with the details.
ganarajpr··on AI-assisted code generation for React
Wow.. Ty for posting it here and the kind words. Means a lot :).

If you think there are some features you would love to see in this, I am all ears.

ganarajpr··on Developing Atom Packages, Part 2: So Much Potential, So Many Bugs
I agree completely with this review of the current state of development for atom.

I believe one of the biggest issues today is their choice of going with coffeescript - for everything ( including package development! ). If we want to involve the largest audience possible - then there is no doubt that - people have to go with javascript. They do support ES6 ( using babel ) - but as a pure javascript developer the documentation being in coffeescript means that - I have to go and translate coffeescript documentations to js and then understand how to actually use any particular api.

Having atleast a pure js documentation - would definitely help quite a lot.

ganarajpr··on CSSNano: A modular minifier based on the PostCSS ecosystem
I am interested to know what are the objective benefits of minication ?

My understanding was that if you did enable gzip compression that takes away most of your advantages from minifying the code ? Am I wrong in this ? Also, does someone have stats on how much more saving can be done with minification , compared to just gzip ?

ganarajpr··on Visualising program execution [video]
This is awesome work - I have always felt that programming till date has been like reading braille - you can read but its not like reading with your eyes. I think tools like these are giving programmers real eyes.

If someone is interested here is the github url for the same :

https://github.com/janpaul123/omniscient-debugging

ganarajpr··on Ask HN: Want to contribute in Open source implementation of research papers
I would suggest you to have a look at http://www.gitxiv.com

Gitxiv is an online list combining research papers from arxiv and their implementations in github. So I would say its a great resource for what you are looking for.

Also, they run some kind of competitive implementation runs where you can collaborate with others to implement papers :

https://github.com/GitXiv/DeepQA

I am a JS dev as well interested in Deep Learning. I dont know your specific interest in this domain but I am happy to collaborate with you - if you are interested. You can reach me at raj at dhi dot io. I would suggest you to pick up python or lua. Lua is quite close to JS and Python is extremely easy to pick up as well.

ganarajpr··on The Rise of Voice Interfaces
I have a radical suggestion for your problem :)..

Buy one of those cute robots in the house things.. Have the user speak to these robots instead of generally speaking into the room.. It feels a lot more natural for human beings and feels less weird since you wont have a feeling of talking to an evil bot that lives in the ether and knows everything about you.

ganarajpr··on A Simple AI Capable of Basic Reading Comprehension
One researcher and a month ( perhaps even less ! ) is more like it..
ganarajpr··on Training a Neural Net to Generate CSS
Someone correct me if I am wrong here, but these char-rnn based outputs are great to look at and experiment with - but they dont seem to be of any practical use. All that they are capable of showing is that an RNN can "remember" things. The biggest question is how do you make any use of these things ?

Is it possible to nudge the RNN in a particular direction - so that it produces something that we want ? Perhaps there is an answer to this in Alex Graves et al. Paper on Handwriting generation. A more thorough explanation or exploration in this direction would perhaps help ?.

Anyone really working on generating CSS ( conditioned! ) ?

ganarajpr··on Training a Neural Net to Generate CSS
Could you point me at any of these papers ?
ganarajpr··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a code similarity detection tool?
There is a project called jsinspect which does what you are talking about. I dont know if yours would be a bit more robust than this one.. But just wanted to provide this - so you know what you are competing with.

ganarajpr··on Ask HN: Startup vs. big corp fresh out of college?
Unless you can join Google or Facebook, I would say startup.

Here are some good reasons to go with a startup ( If its in your powers, CHOOSE.)

1. Startups are more fun. Like the other commenters said, in just 1 year you will learn quite a lot more in a startup than you would in an enterprise company.

2. If you are joining an Enterprise, you are mostly working on code that is already built by someone else - you have to adapt to that - adjust to that. This is not in itself a bad thing - but my belief is that when you do things from scratch - you learn a lot more. As a freshman - out of college - your main aim should be learning - not money.

3. Startups have the advantage of being a possible rocketship. You never know. If you happen to get on one - you will be set for life. You dont have any remote possibility of doing that in an already established company.

4. I am overly generalizing here - but in a larger company - you will have to deal with a lot of bureaucracy and politics. Its an unavoidable thing when more than a few humans come together. This is detrimental to your growth. It wont allow you to move fast and break things.. which is something you should constantly do as a freshman.

5. Again generalizing, startups are more tech focused ( assuming you are a techie ) and enterprises are more management focused. If you join a startup that is a rocketship, you will most likely learn both tech and management at the same time. If the startup you joined dies, go join another one.

ganarajpr··on React UI Builder
It has the concept of boilerplate projects that you can start from. Right now, its bootstrap or material or a blank canvas.. But there is nothing preventing you from creating a new boilerplate project for foundation or semantic-ui if you choose to ( and he is asking us to basically contribute such boilerplate projects ).
ganarajpr··on Language Understanding for Text-based Games Using Deep Reinforcement Learning [pdf]
Would love to see the source code if they have published it anywhere ?
ganarajpr··on Show HN: Edit this webpage with your voice
This is quite interesting and is very close to what we are doing at http://www.dhi.io. Though the difference is that , there is actually an AI sitting in between the user and the editing layer - interpreting the users commands, making the edits etc.
ganarajpr··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2015)
London, UK : Machine Learning Researcher, http://www.dhi.io

This is a very early stage role - so you get to ride the full wave of a startup. Especially when you can completely influence its journey. The vision is to change the way people write web applications. Enough said.

At Dhi, you will be working on an Artificial Intelligent assistant to help "developers" build web applications. A good knowledge of Machine Learning is a must. You should know your way around Torch, Theano - and basically be able to start programming from day one. A good solid maths background would be a serious plus. If your work is in NLP or CNN or RNN we want to hear from you.

Apart from ML , if you have some background in Javascript or building web applications that that would be even better. You can contact us at info at dhi dot io.

ganarajpr··on Ask HN: What is the state of the art set of tools for front end Web developers?
A compilation of things I consider state of the art in the world of Front End.

Libraries : There are infinite number of libraries so - its kind of hard to mention any single one. But VirtualDom[1] is a great one. Also jstruct[2] seems like a good one.

Frameworks : React, Angular 2, Ember - Perhaps even Mercury or other VirtualDom based frameworks.

Testing Tools : Jest. A few other property testing tools as well.

Continuous Integration : ??

Automation Tools : Protractor ?

Compilers : Hmmmm. Babel obviously. Also consider Spiderlang, Clojurescript and Typescript.

Debuggers : Remote Debugging Protocol. Note that this is not itself a debugger but an enabler.

Profilers : Chrome and Edge Profilers.

Collaboration Tools : Not sure what you mean by this.

ganarajpr··on Ask HN: When are you no longer a “junior” developer?
Love the sheer simplicity of this answer.
ganarajpr··on Evidence of Advantages for Children of Working Mothers
Would be quite interesting to have a Hacker news poll to see the distrubution of hners whose mother went to work!

I dont seem to have enough karma to create one unfortunately. Can someone else do it please ?

ganarajpr··on Offer HN: I will build your MVP for $2,500 in two weeks
It would be great if you could include your github profile as well.

On a side note : I have seen similiar posts before and I am intrigued. But there is a question of definition here. What exactly would an MVP be ? The reason I ask is - different people will have different projects in mind. One clients project might be a simple mobile ecommerce site - another might be building a search engine , or an Operating System ?

What exactly could you do for projects like these in 2 weeks ?

ganarajpr··on Unison: a next-generation programming platform
While the ideas here are surely thought provoking - the most important factor seems to be the User Experience of a Semantic Editor. How will a user perceive this constrained environment ?

From what I can tell - users love freedom and computers hate them. Why else do you think people still stick to text editors ? A plain text editor is probably the most unconstrained environment there is. So, what is the best way to find some sanity in between?

If you ask me, I would say that the main way to transform or change programming would be to remove as much constraint as we possibly can from the user. Let me crap all over the place - and you as the environment make sense out of it. That is why we are building Dhi ( http://www.dhi.io ) - An AI Assistant to help you build user interfaces. We are building it in such a way that the user has complete freedom to say whatever he wants to say and we ( perhaps sometimes even with the help of the user! ) plan to make sense of it. THAT is the dream.

ganarajpr··on Review: UndoDB, a reversible debugger
I wish there was a reversible debugger for browsers. Would really love to have something like this ( perhaps something like a time travelling debugger like what elm gives is even better! ). Does anyone know of such a project for the browsers ?
ganarajpr··on What would be your ideal programming language?
I believe this is quite an open ended question. Its almost like asking people - "What would be your ideal music? ". While everyone in the world - after hearing a music / song - will be able to tell you whether they like it or not - They wont be able to tell you what their ideal music is. Mostly because they dont know.

On a side note : A Programming Language is a User Interface - and the best User Interface is the one that is invisible. So, an ideal Programming Language is the one that is mostly invisible.

ganarajpr··on FOAM: New JavaScript Framework by Google Engineers
> I'm envisioning a way to create software, where while having a conversation with another person, we could collaboratively draw some shapes on the screen, connect them, then my program comes to life, evolves, scales up, scales down, etc.

I am glad there are others who are looking into this same approach to build software. We are currently building just this. http://www.dhi.io

We want building web ui's to be as simple as having a conversation with another developer about the requirement.

ganarajpr··on Ask HN: I can barely read, is there a way I could still learn to program?
You might be just one of the customers we can cater for at Dhi ( http://www.dhi.io ). Sorry, for the self promotion - but your problem is exactly something we think, we can solve. We are attempting to change the way people perceptive programming, basically from a set of instructions to a set of features to have. If you are interested in Front End Development ( Building UI's ) then I would say check us out. We are still not out yet - but voice based programming is in our agenda of things to add( or you could just use some other voice recognition software! ).
ganarajpr··on AI that makes Angular/React/Bootstrap Apps?
Glad to hear that you think its futuristic :). There are probably two main differences between thegrid and dhi. Dhi can help with JS also - along with HTML and CSS. Thegrid atleast appears to be mostly focused on design (HTML & CSS ) from their copy. Second important difference is that - with thegrid - the AI does the design or layout. With Dhi - you do the design.

Giving YOU, the developer - full control is extremely important to us.

ganarajpr··on AI that makes Angular/React/Bootstrap Apps?
The AI does not automatically make these apps. Its an assistant - that helps you make. You are still the driver/puppeteer.
ganarajpr··on JavaScript Call Stack/Event Loop Visualization
@jeffmorrisjr : Thank you for the validation :). Yes, I have been building a prototype product for sometime. Nothing out there yet - as far as I know.

If someone knows of a tool / app which does this for a web app I would love to hear about it. We are building bigger and bigger web applications ( and mobile apps these days! ) so my guess is something like this will help.
