galoisscobi··on A brief example of tailoring words for listeners: engineers and managers
I wish our management understand that. Even getting basic cables and adapters can be a kafkaesque battle that requires endless justification. I never thought that this is what it would be like working at a FAANG. Fwiw, I worked at different FAANG and they had a self serve kiosk with free cables and adapters. It was way more efficient.
galoisscobi··on The 'fuck you' pattern (2021)
That has been Meta’s play for a long time. It’s why I don’t use meta products and encourage others to do the same.
galoisscobi··on The 'fuck you' pattern (2021)
I don’t think this is a dark pattern per se. You don’t expect to walk into any restaurant and get free food. With meta products, you pay for content by being tracked. If you refuse to sign in, they refuse to show you content. It’s simple.
galoisscobi··on Python GUIs
Ah sweet. I’ll check those out. Thanks!
galoisscobi··on Python GUIs
Is it just me or do most python GUI options have ugly UI and seem to lack polish?
galoisscobi··on YouTube removed dislike counts, so this guy made Rotten Tomatoes for YouTube
Don’t be evil, unless I guess it starts hurting the ad money.
galoisscobi··on Pump the brakes on your police’s use of Flock (YC17)’s mass surveillance
Flock safety might be the most ethically questionable Y Combinator start up.
galoisscobi··on The Hammerhead Worm
I actually find neovim to work better than VSCode when dealing with large codebases. Telescope [1] based fuzzy searching makes it easy to find stuff in a codebase and harpoon [2] can then be used to short list some important files and quickly navigate to them. There's definitely a bit of a learning curve and setting up your own keybindings before you feel like you're used to it.

galoisscobi··on The Future of Programming – Interview with Richard Eisenberg
Nerd writer made an eloquent video that discusses this theme. It’s called “The Real Danger of ChatGPT”: https://youtu.be/AAwbvGywdOc
galoisscobi··on CppCon 2022 Best Practices Every C++ Programmer Needs to Follow – Oz Syed
This has been a revelation to me. I have always wanted to test in prod but best practices stopped me. Now is my time.
galoisscobi··on Is Meta having growing pains or in a death spiral?
> Mark has been an excellent CEO by all measures.

So would you agree that Mark has done excellent at building products that are good for society’s mental health and well-being?

galoisscobi··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
Wondering how long it’ll take for other tech companies to copy this move and pretend that they independently arrived at these conclusions after their meticulous macroeconomic analysis.
galoisscobi··on My product is my garden (2020)
If you enjoyed reading this, I recommend checking out The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. Reading that book has changed my approach towards work and it has become more relaxed and I have learned to tap deeper into my intuition when engineering.
galoisscobi··on Editors quit top neuroscience journal to protest against open-access charges
That’s a good point. I hadn’t considered that before.
galoisscobi··on Editors quit top neuroscience journal to protest against open-access charges
I fully agree with you.
galoisscobi··on The EARN IT bill is back, seeking to scan our messages and photos
I really appreciate that EFF has a convenient way to reach out to reps. If you’re a US citizen and reading this thread, I highly recommend using EFF’s tool to write to your reps. They have a pre written message and it takes 30 seconds to send it out.
galoisscobi··on Editors quit top neuroscience journal to protest against open-access charges
Then what’s stopping very very busy scientists from submitting to open access and “less prestigious” journals? Those journals exist today.

I’m not saying the onus is on scientists to fix the entire issue but the progress has to start by committees that hire and promote people in academia and to stop looking at publications in prestigious journals as a marker of career progression and differentiation.

galoisscobi··on Editors quit top neuroscience journal to protest against open-access charges
Academia is addicted to pedigree and prestige. People in academia could very well create their own publishing and peer review platforms that they all use, cutting out the middle men but there's an obsession with top journals/conferences and how that is tied to career progression that stands in the way.
galoisscobi··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
I personally live in the same zip code as my company’s water coolers. That’s where elders (C suite) say best collaboration and creativity (TM) happen and they won’t let me go remote. All my friends are disbursed all over the country located at the zip codes their company’s water coolers are at (read: remote work is not the norm). Some lucky ones are remote and they’re able to live in places that are best for them (near family, good surf etc).
galoisscobi··on Vim-like “jump” cursor for Mac OS Window Management
I also came from a TWM (i3) to macOS. It took a while to get to a good solution but I have it down now with yabai and skhd for window management. For launching apps, I wrote something around the launchAppOrFocus API in hammerspoon, assigning hot keys to my commonly used apps. I also have a rule set in yabai that launches certain apps in set desktop spaces.

I use spotlight search for the apps I don’t open so frequently but having something closer to dmenu (or a fuzzy find app picker) would be nice.

galoisscobi··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
Maybe Sam thinks about this at some level. From his New Yorker profile[0]:

> "The other most popular scenarios would be A.I. that attacks us and nations fighting with nukes over scarce resources.” The Shypmates looked grave. “I try not to think about it too much,” Altman said. “But I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to.”

This doesn't explicitly talk about him being worried about AI putting a lot of people out of jobs but he is prepping for AI going awry.

galoisscobi··on Tesla now factors late night driving into their safety score
Yet another reason to not buy car insurance that tracks you. FTFY
galoisscobi··on Even the Pylint codebase uses Ruff
I was excited to start using Ruff however it has quite a few ruff edges for me to use professionally. Back to pylint for now, but looking forward to adopting it once it's ready. The difference in speed was night and day.

Another feature I hope to see in Ruff is to "score" the code. With pylint, I can have a CI rule to make the lint check pass if it scores 8/10 or above, or even a lower score so that co-workers who resent using linters can start using them.

galoisscobi··on Hector Martin: we care about fixing Linux problems on Asahi
I’m very grateful for the Asahi project, Hector’s leadership and everyone who has contributed to or supported the project. This care for the nitty gritty details, in my view, makes a big difference and is a true service to the world. It is a heartfelt gift to the community.

Thank you for caring.

galoisscobi··on How I use Notion to manage everything
I love the idea of notion but could never get myself to use it due to their privacy policy.
galoisscobi··on Ask HN: Share your favorite YouTube channels focused on mastering a skill/craft
I really like Zack Freedman’s channel. He hacks on wearables and does cool stuff with 3D printers and is hilarious.

galoisscobi··on BBC Modi Documentary Removal
That’s just free speech absolutism!
galoisscobi··on Tesla reports record revenue and beats on earnings
The cars don’t even have ultrasonic sensors any more. It’s a standard feature in all cars and Tesla is shipping without it. I wonder if people will realize that and question their buying decisions.

They want to transition park assist to Tesla vision but in the mean time, no park assist on the newest teslas.

galoisscobi··on What we look for in a resume
I don’t know how I feel about this post. On one hand, if I were running a company, I would want a hiring process similar to this.

On the other hand, the company I work for has draconian publishing policies. I can’t have a technical blog, can’t have GitHub repos of hobby projects I work on my own time, can’t write about any of the work I do on my resume. If I want to contribute to other repos, I need an approval for legal which takes forever and if you’re lucky enough to get it, you have to write “not a contribution” in the submission. When asked about what to write in the resume, they say to copy the job posting (or parts of it) I was initially hired for.

Aside from these crazy policies, I love working at my current workplace but sometimes I wonder if I’m hurting my future by staying on and letting my resume for these years spin into a black hole.

galoisscobi··on Apple CEO Tim Cook requests and receives a 40% pay cut
Isn’t it fun to move goalposts! On layoff threads, people comment that the CEOs “taking full responsibility” should cut exec pay. Now we have a company that hasn’t had any layoffs and the CEO is taking a paycut and it’s a pointless symbolic gesture.
