galleywest200··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
My company uses Oracle BRM to bill for millions of phone calls each month. It would be such a crazy upheaval project to move from that.
galleywest200··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
Prehistoric humans get a pass in my book. They seemed to have a cozy life.
galleywest200··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
I agree with this statement in general, but it “hurts less” to spend money when you are running things yourself. Hard for me to give a specific definition as to why, but it may be more palatable to companies to burn their own cash on their own hardware.

Maybe it is “sunked cost” or maybe it is “I will do it myself dammit”.

galleywest200··on Research carried out using NetBSD
I wonder if the popularity of NetBSD for research has to do with how easy it is to compile a version of NetBSD with favorable licenses.

You can opt to build it yourself and exclude anything that is not 2-clause BSD licensed, as some drivers and such are if I recall correctly.

galleywest200··on Christmas Village shoppers no longer will be allowed to enter booths
My response to that would be

“Hey intern/grad student, enjoy your new assignment”

galleywest200··on Christmas Village shoppers no longer will be allowed to enter booths
Captions are for audio. I presume if someone is reading captions they can read the whiteboard.

Now if you are talking about the blind then sure thats different but the blind don't need captions.

galleywest200··on Christmas Village shoppers no longer will be allowed to enter booths
Counter point is captions are also really cheap. I presume the lecturer read from a script, just use that.
galleywest200··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Birthright citizenship is a constitutional right in the US same as freedom of speech, religion, the press, and the right to sue the government.

The change would require 2/3 of all states to approve a constitutional amendment. It won't ever pass. Most of us are only citizens because someone up the chain was born under this rule.

My family came here in the early 1700s and fought in the revolution. It would be a disgrace for me to do anything other than support immigrants.

galleywest200··on Access to Urban Woodlands Linked with Lower Use of Antidepressants
Could be that woodlands grow better in areas with more rain and thus less sun and thus more cases of seasonal depression?
galleywest200··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
“Birds aren’t real” is fully and completely a meme for goofs.

Zuck I think is also just for goofs but the others yes indeed have true believers.

galleywest200··on ASCII City Update: Interiors, Elevation and Skyscrapers [video]
Note: not my video. Please support the author/developer who is "Grow Now! Games".
galleywest200··on Jason Arday Found Dead
Anyone who tries to unironically complain about “DEI” in the headline does not deserve a read. It is just a dog whistle at this point.
galleywest200··on The TEMU-Fication of Software, Digital Goods and Services
Temu had a Superbowl ad. Not sure AliExpress did that.
galleywest200··on AI Is Threatening Natural Resources for Billions
Where I live it can rain hundreds of days a year and the nearest course had browning greens last time I drove by.
galleywest200··on AI Is Threatening Natural Resources for Billions
We can do two things: limit almond farming and limit AI water usage.
galleywest200··on CFTC declares market emergency, orders Kalshi to continue to operate in New York
Isn't this how gambling works though? You and I place a similar value of chips on a table, then the winner walks it over to a third party (the counter at the casino) to exchange the chips for currency?
galleywest200··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
> As far as I know, the only reason spoofing is even possible, is so that call centers in other countries can pretend to be calling from a local number, which.. why is that even a feature?

It is very common for each individual phone in a call center to have a direct inward dial number, but when they dial out they want the main support contact number to be displayed so you can get routed appropriately and not harass their tech support employee.

galleywest200··on The main way I've seen people turn ideologically crazy (2025)
Just like how sometimes I consider how little I should care about a social media frequenter’s opinions. I am, for better or for worse, getting near the last willing comment I am going to leave on this, or any, social media site.

That is not due to age or illness, it is due to enshittification. Not by the admin but by the populace.

galleywest200··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
City run grocery stores are certainly not evil.
galleywest200··on Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
Examples?
galleywest200··on Drug reverses autism-like brain changes in adult mice within hours
> The effects of rapamycin are temporary, and repeated dosing loses efficacy, making rapamycin, itself, an unlikely candidate as a broadly-used treatment.
galleywest200··on Show HN: How far do I have to go to run into 100k people?
Havre, MT has curved rays going east. Is that intentional?
galleywest200··on Game Pass Was Supposed to Save Xbox – Instead, It's Killing the Company
> Every gamer has dreamed about having an infinite library of games to choose from.

Eh, that sounds like I would have difficulty picking which games to play. I kind of prefer having a narrower selection from my shelf (and digital shelf)

galleywest200··on How My Images Are Dithered
> It's fine to dither images but please please admit that you're doing it for the aesthetic

They did in the article.

> My goal was to immitate a printed image.

galleywest200··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
At least Minecraft is generally additive as opposed to mucking up the previously working mechanics.

(This of course is excluding things like the big “Flattening” of data structures that happened around 1.13 or so)

galleywest200··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
Luckily when I was studying for my Organic Chemistry degree it was just pictures and arrows and not a lot of anything else!
galleywest200··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
I don't buy the “scraping” protection when appending .json to any reddit URL still gives you the data.

galleywest200··on $100 AI Music Video: Claude Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol
At least non-AI slop had a human behind it.
galleywest200··on Sony Deletes a Bunch More Movies from the Accounts of People Who 'Bought' Them
How does that work if my player is offline? A dedicated BluRay player has no reason to connect to the internet.
galleywest200··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them
Sony released the PS5 Slim earlier this cycle.
