gallego2007··on Plastics producers deceived public about recycling, report reveals
This is really the only way to improve the situation. Hold the companies generating the plastic “trash” responsible via taxes/fines. The regulatory pressure will make a difference.
gallego2007··on The Great British Fake Off: how show's name is edited for an US of A television
Touché.
gallego2007··on FDA asks federal judge to wait until 2076 to fully release Covid vaccine data
Would love to see the US Digital Service step in to get this data released faster than 500 pages per month. Sheesh.
gallego2007··on The Goiânia Accident (1987)
You have to put yourself in the shoes of someone trying to get by… in a developing country no less…
gallego2007··on The Tokyo Olympic Robots
They're cute, but I'm a bit disappointed that the Field Support Robot doesn't actually retrieve the ball itself, rather it follows the official on the field and waits for a payload.
gallego2007··on My app just got removed with no prior warning
Was the Privacy Policy linked on the Play Store listing description as well?

IIRC, there was a recent change in the last 12 months or so to require a link to the privacy policy on the listing.

You should be able to file an appeal and get it reinstated using this form:

gallego2007··on Nikola Tesla invention from 100 years ago suddenly makes more sense today
That's pretty cool that it doesn't require any moving parts and manages to reduces the flow to almost a trickle when the direction is reversed.
gallego2007··on Google showing animated ships when searching “ever given”
Looks like it’s desktop only. On mobile I had to toggle on ‘Request desktop site’ to see the ships scrolling across the top of the search results.

Cute Easter egg lol

gallego2007··on Why I'm unreachable and maybe you should be too
To each their own.
gallego2007··on Japan to stage Tokyo Olympics without overseas spectators
That's too bad. Makes you wonder if they shouldn't cancel or delay for another year (with a reset to the timing of the games that follow) while the vaccines get rolled out and we see how much normalcy can be regained.
gallego2007··on Bay Area drug kingpins lured low-level dealers, promising cheap rent (2020)
It was tough reading that article on a phone with all the ads... random up/down movements and even a full page refresh at one point!
gallego2007··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
Wow. Not even a call from the Recruiter to walk you through the offer letter?
gallego2007··on A fake company to play around with spammers and you can use it too
Clever. So the rest of us just need to send a single reply with that first email address to set a chain of events into motion since the scripts are already set. Hah
gallego2007··on Man who moved from CA to Texas pens scathing op-ed complaining about Austin
I know the trend to relocate there has been going on for a while now, but I scratched Austin off my list after a 2016 visit due to (1) a very small airport with limited international flights and (2) really bad traffic (but that’s almost all cities, right?).
gallego2007··on Google hasn’t updated its iOS apps in weeks to avoid providing privacy details
I had a similar thought, but December 7th was indeed the last date that new versions were pushed to the App Store for Chat, Drive, Keep, Meet, etc.
gallego2007··on Goodreads plans to retire API access, disables existing API keys
Apparently Amazon’s Kindle lost the ability to share progress on Goodreads in the last week as well.

I guess the writings on the wall...

gallego2007··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
I read this as the US Central time zone is convenient for working with people on both Coasts and those working remote.
gallego2007··on Google Meet Security and Privacy for users
AFAIK, yes this has always been the case with Meet.
gallego2007··on Google Meet Security and Privacy for users
One thing to call out is that this is true for consumer created Meet calls, but not for G Suite/Workspace created Meet calls. Users w/o a Google account can join those calls by “knocking” and being accepted to the call (by the organizer or a user on the same domain) [1]. There's also a dial-in by phone option.

gallego2007··on Robinhood Accounts Looted, No Customer Support
Can’t upvote this enough! Checks should have been done away with long ago, but I guess some landlords still like to cash them in-person...
gallego2007··on Desolate English path has killed more than 100 people (2017)
I had to look this up just to see what this 'right-left' swerve looked like on a bridge... found the following article [1] (from an insurance company no less!) with a picture and a link to an old news article [2] about the missing teen driver.

gallego2007··on The Case of the Top Secret iPod
Just to add to this, the DOE (and related agencies) leads weapons inspections as part of several treaties (START, START II, nuclear test band treaty, etc.) This work often involves traveling to other countries to do inspections and verify compliance as part of the agreement.
gallego2007··on T-Mobile: Are you blocking specific words and suspending accounts?
I was thinking the exact same thing. I need to convince a few family members to ditch SMS... unfortunately some businesses (like apartment buildings) still use SMS to communicate, so it’ll probably be a while before we fully move away from this medium.
gallego2007··on Google open sources trademarks with the Open Usage Commons
IBM has responded to this development publicly since it includes Istio -- which is a joint project between the companies and apparently was agreed to be contributed to CNCF at maturity: https://developer.ibm.com/components/istio/blogs/istio-googl...
gallego2007··on Colleges rescinding admissions offers as racist social media posts emerge
Completely agree with this comment. Well put.
gallego2007··on Next dream job can be in an HTTP header
Nice write-up with some interesting findings! I might have to start poking around headers more often...
gallego2007··on Intel to buy smart urban transit startup Moovit for $1B for its car division
Interesting acquisition by Intel, but also equally surprising valuation at $1B. I thought Moovit was entirely crowdsourced and made up primarily of volunteers[1]... maybe that changed recently?

gallego2007··on Azure cracks, AWS strong: Covid-19 stress-tests the cloud
From the link, Google has seen the following for Meet usage:

“Over the last few weeks, Meet’s day-over-day growth surpassed 60%, and as a result, its daily usage is more than 25 times what it was in January. Despite this growth, the demand has been well within the bounds of our network’s ability.”

gallego2007··on Ask HN: Computer Science/History Books?
The Soul of a New Machine is a great read! Highly recommended.
gallego2007··on A Teacher Did an Experiment to Show the Power of Handwashing
Wow. Simple but effective experiment.
