galenko··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
We are a dying breed.

A whole new generation has never known an App Store without ads.

To them this is the norm.

galenko··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
Yes. My wife’s mother keeps buying crap in game using my card and I have no reasonable way of blocking her from doing so if I want to keep app purchase sharing.

It’s insane. Does no one at apple have senile in laws? Or is this acceptable?

galenko··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
At this point why even use spotlight? Raycast or a list of other maybe more minimalistic replacements would work great.
galenko··on AWS Free Tier Changes on July 15, 2025
Didn’t oracle cloud offer something like that free forever?
galenko··on Scientists may have found mechanism behind cognitive decline in aging
There’s poor dental hygiene and then there is nuking all the bacteria in your mouth with mouthwash.

You can have perfect dental hygiene and never use mouth wash in your life.

Just cause companies like selling you a product, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

galenko··on Stanford president resigns over manipulated research, will retract 3 papers
In my personal, anecdotal experience...

Once you get far enough in ANY sport, you start considering tradeoffs between risking long term health and improving performance. If you are a competent adult, you can evaluate your drivers, consider risks.

But without fail, in ANY competitive sport, you realise that you have to risk health in order to achieve that next performance tier, there is no other way.

Once you get into that 1-10%(depending on sport) elite level, you realise that there is no way you can compete without PEDs.

I've participated in (taken myself) and have been a witness to this in weightlifting(olympic and strongman), soccer, cycling and swimming. Starting young. Real young.

Coaches of different sanity levels are trusted to make the right choices and not often questioned by busy or absent parents.

Everyone cheers on when medals are won and records are broken, without consideration for how it happens.

I personally had no idea I was taking hormone modifiers until about 16, it started at 11.

My coach just gave me what he said were vitamins and I never questioned it, he was the closest thing to a father I had, his authority was absolute.

At 16 I found myself in a hospital yellow as a banana on the brink of liver failure, that's when I found out.

Everyone on our team took what the coaches gave. Once a while we'd see a parent get into a shouting match with one of the coaches about something we didn't understand and that kid would never come back again.

Some of the guys I trained with went on to become highly recognisable names in their respective sports. One even has a supplement brand. Those I've kept in touch with continue PED use, that is the price of being at the top of the game.

galenko··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars?
BMW XM is a great example of how not to do this.

Want to turn on your fancy seat vents? 3 taps on the large screen in the middle.

Want to change some temps/fan speed? Swipe(not as nice as iOS) right, look through 10 identical looking icons and arrows, to find the right one.

Honestly, I thought people were exaggerating how bad it was until I got to experience it for myself. As a long term fan of the brand, it’s utterly disappointing.

galenko··on Wix’s new tool can create entire websites from prompts
This AI is basically a search engine layer for the wix library of components.

It uses pre-defined colour palettes, with minor modifications.

I hope you’re right, but I don’t understand how, by design it’s not supposed to come up with completely new things (even though that’s what the marketing blurb says).

galenko··on Study drugs make people worse at problem solving, not better
We all project/assume based on the bubble we live in.

In my 18 years of in-house software dev experience (several countries, companies of different sizes), not once have I even heard (in the real world, not online) of people using any sort of drugs like the ones mentioned in the article.

I'm not saying that you're wrong. But based on my personal experience, I also could bet the opposite of what you're saying and feel just as confident.

galenko··on A Wellness Chatbot Is Offline After Its ‘Harmful’ Focus on Weight Loss
In this case it wasn’t a LLM, or AI. It was a pretty dumb chat bot script.
galenko··on Sleep habits may have long-term benefits
I picked up meditating daily in an attempt to address one of my mental disorders.

Falling asleep is much easier for me now, whereas I used to struggle with it a lot.

My thoughts used to feel unstoppable and the moment I would wake up in the middle of the night, they started going and I was wide awake and no longer sleepy within seconds.

Now it’s like I’m observing them, but no longer get excited. I still have bad days, it’s not a 100% consistent solution, but it’s helped me massively.

galenko··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
I am not sure if cloudflare is liked by HN this week, but so far, I’ve not had a bad experience with their registrar.

Fast and cheap.

galenko··on The Pretty Good House
No. That’s still a lottery and you are basically saying I’m paying more, so I expect a better service. This does not guarantee results. At all.

What you want is a third party.

Someone who understands the trade and the codes and will check in on the building site daily and will make sure everything is being done correctly. And if it’s not, will stop work and put everyone in their place.

I frankly have no idea what the term for that is in America, but we call them freelance foremen where I’m from. Current going rate per month is roughly 1.5x minimum wage in my country.

May sound like a lot of money for someone just doing checking, but that’s only until you find out how expensive lack of oversight can be.

Ask around, many building companies offer these services, so company a builds the house, and an inspector from unrelated company b does the daily inspection. But ideally you’d find a one man band man, who’s really gonna be on your side.

galenko··on How Automattic develops software for over 75M websites
The new editing interface (Gutenberg) has been written in react and there are rumours about more of the backend being rewritten in it too.

edit: I meant more of the admin area, sorry.

galenko··on Apple Lays Off 200 Employees from Autonomous Car Unit
They lag, because it makes the laptops more profitable. Older chips cost less.

They are crushing the competition, their profits show that and profits are the ultimate goal.

galenko··on AllenNLP – An open-source NLP research library, built on PyTorch
Sadly, the NLP world is full of hot air. I've seen so many companies get funding for complete "written by a 12-year old" dogshit "industry leading IP", it's not even funny anymore.

The hype has gone down and some are actually doing great work, but 90% of the people who say they do NLP/AI stuff don't even fundamentally understand what NLP/AI is.

galenko··on Can we guess your age and income, based solely on the apps on your phone?
You are a single guy younger than 32 who makes more than $52,000/year

Ding, except I'm in a long term committed relationship. Interesting that it thought I was single (I said no to every single dating/chat app on the list), no facebook, etc, only thing I have is instagram.

galenko··on Ask HN: How to find remote freelance work for a graphic designer?
Hey, I wasn't sure how correct it would be to try and self-promote on HN, was more looking for steps to take/routes to follow to help her on her way, but here is her Behance: https://www.behance.net/mondesgate and here is her email: yanakligule@gmail.com
galenko··on I created a fake business and bought it an online reputation
CBS Canada, did this about a year ago, very interesting watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y0pYUdfGiw
galenko··on Show HN: HTML5 version of StarCraft
This is awesome, but as others have said, the Blizzard legal team will come knocking on your door very soon. If I were you and if you're serious about continuing working on this, I would take this down immediately, get in touch with their legal team and see if you can work something out with them to get their blessing on this.

They're not evil, it's their job to protect copyrighted assets, without them Blizzard would be out of pocket and SC2 might not have been created, from my experience, there are some really friendly people there, but you have to get on their good side and I'd say you've already gone about this the wrong way (by githubbing their copyrighted stuff).

galenko··on How Gangs Took Over Prisons
The first paragraph kind of ignores the homeless and the poor and even Mr Average Joe, who's got a list of medical conditions, which he can't afford to fix, so getting himself locked up for a while, just to get access to healthcare, doesn't sound insane.

Can you imagine that? Remain free and barely be able to put food on the table for your family or go to prison, just to solve a medical problem?

galenko··on Ask HN: What are you building?
Helping with setup is great, but config is where the real pain is. So maybe some pre-defined config files? Or a generator of sorts? So if I have a nginx or apache web server and I spin up a 16gb DO instance just for that, the config by default would actually use all of the ram, instead of being capped to small defaults.
galenko··on Ask HN: What are you building?
I'm assuming that you're sort of doing the wordpress.org/.com model with paid hosted and free, open source self hosted options, right?

I did spend a few minutes on the site figuring this out.

imho the free trial is too close/similar looking to the download now and unless you know how wordpress plays, this can be confusing. Also, the fact that you can donate to the same site you have to pay for is a little weird.

Wordpress has a clear separation for a good reason.

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong, I just think how it's presented can be improved upon.

galenko··on Ask HN: Has anyone actually used Parse.com to build anything more than an MVP?
The question is: is it really cheaper to run and maintain your own custom stack/server network, than getting these guys to do it, when you factor in the amount of time it takes/hiring staff, etc?
galenko··on Fiverr Raises $30M for Online Services Marketplace
I think it's the luck of the draw/poor selection of supplier.

My girlfriend did fiverr logos for a while to build up a portfolio to be able to get reasonable clients and charge more. All her work was unique and very well researched.

galenko··on Massive 'ocean' discovered towards Earth's core
I'm by no means defending the lunacy, but it would be an efficient way of transferring such a huge amount of water: heat it up using the core or the holy kettle and let the steam rise up through the earth, which would then fall down as rain.
galenko··on Netflix to expand to Germany, France and Switzerland
It's not about legality, it's about convenience, while living in the UK, I honestly stopped downloading illegal stuff and was surviving on spotify+netflix+lovefilm+bbc iPlayer.

Now I'm in Latvia for a while and none of those (except for spotify) work without a proxy. So TPB is my friend again.

I have no problem with paying, just make it convenient and reasonably priced (iTunes I think is not, maybe I'm not rich enough).

galenko··on Varnish 4.0 Released
So I've scanned (not read, ain't nobody got time for that) everything inside of the link you gave and while very interesting and comprehensive, if I was a sysadmin on a salary, I'd sink a few days into this and become really good at it, but I'm booked up, so I just need this up and running, so again, it's useless.

It comes down to your resources: do you have the man power to create several default vcl files that people can "just use": like a vcl for a RoR app, vcl for a WordPress site, vcl for a Symfony app etc (depending on actual usage/popularity)...

I started using varnish because of this tutorial: http://ewan.im/900/10-million-hits-a-day-with-wordpress-usin...

I know it's a catchy and grabby title and sort of BS if you think about it, but it just works.

It took me an hour to get a DO dropplet running and blitz.io reported numbers that made me happy ($10 DO dropplet, large WP site, 27k+ requests per minute), that's enough for us.

I've got a few other ideas, but I think that if your company does something similar, you'll be able to get a much wider appeal and engage with users a lot more, which is great PR and marketing for your paid service.

galenko··on Varnish 4.0 Released
First of all, kudos, Varnish is an amazing piece of kit and hat's off to you sir.

However, I've been where you are and know how you feel, what you've said makes perfect logical sense to you, in your mind these are clear instructions on what should be done, but they still mean very little to someone who's completely new to this (even though they've been using Varnish for a good while now).

I'm a WordPress dev (I know, but it pays the bills), but I have been put between a rock and a hard place, so now I'm also responsible for setting up DO droplets for standalone websites. The reason I use Varnish is simplicity: apt-get install, wget on a WordPress vcl file, change a port and we're saving ram and can serve to 6x-10x concurrent users than before on straight nginx.

Thing is, I'm not alone in this use case, I know several people, who adore the magic and ease of use of Varnish. None of us know the insides, but we're can copy-paste and change a few things.

We respect and understand the need for dropping backwards compatibility, but all believe that the upgrade docs desperately need some examples.

I know it's the language of the devil, but the docs and the examples are definitely very usable to complete newbies: http://php.net/manual/en/function.date.php

Your docs are great for someone who has the time to read them all and learn all about Varnish, like a book, but (with no disrespect) borderline useless to someone who's got deadlines and a ton of work and simply has no time to learn this system that he's been relying on for a while.

galenko··on Varnish 4.0 Released
Or if I currently don't have the time to do this, I have to either stop using varnish completely or not upgrade.

I get the whole needing to drop backwards compatibility thing, but without an idiot-proof way of upgrading, you're sentencing users like me, who use Varnish as a sprinkle of magic on the server.

Some examples of before/after of actual vcl files are a must in my opinion.
