galad87··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
After every time the computer goes to sleep or something like that. I made a script to quickly restart the Dock.
galad87··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
The funny fact is that they didn't add any new feature to Mission Control, they just rewrote it and broke it in the process.
galad87··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
They surely fixed a lot of bugs, but not enough, and they added so many new stupid ones. Mission Control wasn't perfect before, but at least it wasn't buggy. Now there is a bug every two clicks.

Even double-clicking in Finder is broken, many times double-clicks are just ignored.

Mission Control is unusable in macOS 27. Shortcuts to switch spaces stop working (Dock must be killed to get them to work again), there is a padding between spaces thumbnails and the top of the screen so it's no longer possible to just easily move the mouse at the top to select one, windows rearrange randomly when one is clicked, full screen app spaces breaks each time you try to use them, animations are wonky and you can't reenter mission control while some animations are running, etc…
galad87··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
The process that shows the Spotlight UI is now the one called "Siri", previously it was called "Spotlight".
galad87··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
Which version of svt-av1 are you using? Neon optimisations were added quite recently in svt-av1, and are still a bit incomplete, so it might make a difference.
galad87··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
Running something with "Wine" doesn't usually mean "porting", "porting" means making a native binary that doesn't run through an emulation layer.

Anyway, probably you are trying to run a 32-bit executable with Rosetta, that won't be fast, because Rosetta was never meant to run 32-bit things and has got a lot of pitfalls.

galad87··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
Cool, but Apple didn't announce any M6 Pro yet, so where is this coming from?
galad87··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Apple's Weather app has an animated background, glassy views, and nice animations like water droplets on the glassy views when it's raining. So rendering all that on a 4k or more display at 10bit depth is going to consume a bit of RAM. However I guess it can surely be improved to make it consume less RAM.
galad87··on The myth of Snow Leopard
Snow Leopard shipped a new 64-bit Cocoa Finder too, but no one noticed because it was almost a pixel perfect and behaviour perfect copy of the previous one.
galad87··on Dissecting Apple's Sparse Image Format (ASIF)
Of course, but that works only if the files are already in the same partition. A dmg is a virtual image, even if it's stored in the same partition, once mounted it acts like another partition.
galad87··on Sweet Jeebus, macOS 27 Golden Gate Removes the Dumb Icons from Menu Items
Tahoe can't ramp up the GPU frequency fast enough, and many animation like the QuickLook one often run at less than 30 fps. So much fun.
galad87··on Valve removes free game from Steam after players discover it contains malware
Games are an almost perfect type of software to be run in a sandbox. The question is, why aren't they already run in a sandbox?
galad87··on Backblaze has stopped backing up your data
Long press is a shortcut, the longer way is to click on the icon beside the url and tap/click the enormous "reader mode" button.
galad87··on You can't trust macOS Privacy and Security settings
TCC is a leaky shoot at limiting non-sandboxed apps permissions. The actual macOS sandbox is a different thing.

I would say that TCC is working as intended, unfortunately, with many obscure behaviors to avoid breaking existing apps.

It's even more unfortunate that a lot of apps that could be easily sandboxed aren't.

galad87··on You can't trust macOS Privacy and Security settings
TCC is a different thing. Sandboxed apps work differently and won't need those TCC dialogs.
galad87··on H.264 Streaming Fees: What Changed, Who's Affected, and What It Means
Safari, or better, macOS and iOS include a software AV1 decoder (libdav1d), but it's used only to decode avif, and to generate file previews in Finder.
galad87··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
It's missing the double click on a number feature from minesweeper.
galad87··on macOS Tahoe windows have different corner radiuses
To align the window corner radius to the window close/minimize/resize buttons distance from the edge of the window.
galad87··on macOS Tahoe windows have different corner radiuses
Because that's by design. The windows are meant to have different corner radius, they even explained it at WWDC. Then people forgot and rediscovered it again, like it was some new thing.

I am not saying that it's a good idea to have different corner radius, just that it's nothing new.

galad87··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
It broke some NSWindow styles: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/814798
galad87··on Show HN: Itsyhome – Control HomeKit from your Mac menu bar (open source)
Every device compatible with the Matter standard[1] can be used with Apple Home (and with every other solution that supports Matter, like Google and Amazon ones), so almost everything is compatible with everything out there.

galad87··on Epic celebrates "the end of the Apple Tax" after court win in iOS payments case
It should be based on the app size, so maybe developers will stop shipping apps with a single feature and one button that takes 700 MB because of random bloated third-party SDKs that aren't even used.
galad87··on Netflix’s AV1 Journey: From Android to TVs and Beyond
All I read about is that it's less hardware friendly than H.264 and HEVC, and they were all complaining about it. AV2 should be better in this regard.

Where did you read that it was designed to make creating an hardware decoder easier?

galad87··on Windows GUI – Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly (2023)
I assume there is a reason for leaving out Windows Me.
galad87··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
web.whatsapp.com is still going to use more RAM than the old native version.
galad87··on Meta replaces WhatsApp for Windows with web wrapper
The macOS app is the iOS app running on macOS thanks to Catalyst, hopefully they won't replace it with that Electron/WebViewOfTheDay crap.
galad87··on App Store web has exposed all its source code
Nowadays it's all AppKit/UIKit/SwiftUI. It's no longer a webview.
galad87··on Free software scares normal people
DVD-Video subtitles are often only bitmaps, and the AppleTV can handle only text subtitles. HandBrake can't OCR bitmaps at the moment.
galad87··on Free software scares normal people
But there is already a "1-button magicbrake" mode, or maybe two buttons:

1. Open a file; 2. Click the start button in the toolbar.
