galactus··on China Bans Financial Companies From Bitcoin Transactions
More than anything else, there is just too much speculation. Much much more than adoption of bitcoin as a currency.
galactus··on The Problem with Altcoins
I think the author is overestimating the weight of bitcoin's network. It would only take a really major player to back any of the altcoins to kill bitcoin
galactus··on Helpouts by Google
I'm not saying "we should" punish any company that kills a product, I'm saying that a track of killing products for strategic reasons is one of the factors any rational consumer usually considers before spending time in a new product.
galactus··on Helpouts by Google
When a startup closes a service, I'm pretty sure most people in HN will be equally cautious about investing their time in any new product the same startup might launch.
galactus··on Passive Income Hacker vs Startup Guy
What do we win by promoting these caricatures?
galactus··on Canada's Start-up Visa
Actually you typically apply for citizenship after you become a permanent resident, and it takes less effort (from the candidate, at least). But in any case, it is the same service that is in charge of both citizenship and permanent residency, and they are understaffed. Perhaps they will give more priority to Startup visas processing than to other types of visa.
galactus··on Canada's Start-up Visa
The canadian "citizen and immigration" service is seriously understaffed (thanks, Mr. Harper!). Some consequences of this:

* It currently takes more than two years in average to process a citizenship request.

* The CIC stopped accepting any new application from canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency.

So, this all sounds good in paper, but Im skeptical about how well it will work in reality.

galactus··on Linus on "acting professionally"
You make it sound as if it was a perfectly normal tone to use... Do you talk like that to, say, your parents?
galactus··on Show HN: Your "spare" domains
identi.co

I have no idea what to do with it ;)

galactus··on How Google have lost opportunity to get millions of Google+ users
Many users would have seen that as another instance of google trying to shove google+ down their thoats.
galactus··on Project Loon
> The long game is being fully wired. By the time poor > areas become economically important enough to be > advertised to, they will have traditional telecoms > servicing them.

... And by that time, they will all be users of the google ecosystem thanks to this.

galactus··on Google Glass Teardown
The difference between Google Glass and smartphones is that with Google Glass it is much more difficult to know if someone is recording you.
galactus··on Has the US become the type of nation from which you have to seek asylum?
Stalin's Gulag was full of "traitors".
galactus··on Thousands dead, millions deprived of civil liberties? (2001)
In what sense is Github closed-source?

(edit: The FSF makes the distinction between propietary software and Software as a Service: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/who-does-that-server-really-se...)

galactus··on What is Happening in Istanbul?
I personally find thousands of people trying to defend a public park much more democratic than business lobby groups with unlimited resources influencing the policy makers.
galactus··on Letter To A Young Programmer Considering A Startup
A formula for creativity would basically be the equivalent of a formula for "success". They belong in the motivational literature shelf.
galactus··on Letter To A Young Programmer Considering A Startup
I liked this part: "Startups have been systematized, mythologized, culturally and socially de-risked; reduced down to formulas and recipes. Yet, there is no enduring formula for creativity and rebellion."
galactus··on India’s elites have a ferocious sense of entitlement
it sounds a lot like my own country, Colombia, particularly the part about priviledged people considering themselves middle class.
galactus··on For One Man, It Really Is the End of the World
I think the point is that when trips are too short they are not really adding anything to your "cultural understanding".

I see it like reading the wikipedia page for 193 different programming languages Vs. actually learning how to program in a few of them.

galactus··on Ex-Googlers Launch Sift Science (YC S11), a Fraud-Fighting System For Websites
Good lord.. The original comment was about both false negatives and false positives: "it doesn't go into rates of false positives [...] or false negatives"

Pc86 pointed that we actually know the rate for false negatives, if we assume that 90% success means that the system did not detect 10% of real frauds. So he was asking if he misunderstood the meaning of "90% success".

edit: typo

galactus··on Ex-Googlers Launch Sift Science (YC S11), a Fraud-Fighting System For Websites
Pc86 knows the meaning of false positives and false negatives, you should read his original question again.
galactus··on Show HN: Save Memory in Google Chrome
wow, amazingly simple/useful idea! Thanks!
galactus··on Consumer key/secret for official Twitter clients
Does twitter honor the the oauth_callback parameter? Otherwise, how can those keys be used by an attacker?
galactus··on U.S. CEO to France: ‘How Stupid Do You Think We Are?’
I dont think the unemployment affects the stats that much but anyway the US has a higher GDP per capita and higher GDP per hour worked than France. I was just replying to the common stereotype that France is significatively less productive than other european countries (say, Germany).

Another fact that contradicts that stereotype is France's position as a recipient of foreign direct investment:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_received_F...

Why would people invest so much in a supposedly "lazy" country?

galactus··on U.S. CEO to France: ‘How Stupid Do You Think We Are?’
France is one of most productive countries in the world, when measured as GDP per hour-worked:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP...

galactus··on The Nordic countries are probably the best-governed in the world
I love it how The Economist often runs articles trying to prove that excellent living conditions in nordic countries are all about "pro-business reforms" and have nothing to do with their well known welfare states. Ahh, The Economist...
galactus··on Computer Science PhD trends
I'm pretty sure working for google for 200K is NOT the worst case scenario for a computer science PhD.
galactus··on Google+ is now the second largest social platform by active users
If it was really the only thing I used, then yes, I would not count myself as an active user of a social network. It is OK to say google+ has N number of active users, what irks people is when they say it is the largest or second largest social network using that count
galactus··on Google+ is now the second largest social platform by active users
Would you find normal to be counted as an active user of Microsoft's social network just for using Skype (supposing you could use the same account)?
galactus··on The If-by-whiskey fallacy
Why is it considered a "fallacy"?
