galactus··on Bringing people back to the open web
I don't believe there will be any silver bullet that will make people back to the open web any soon by sheer technical merit. In the meantime, we should not abandon efforts to make people understand why huge centralized walled gardens such as facebook are a problem. It would be like if society had stopped anti-smoking campaigns in the past, waiting for a miraculous safe cigarette to solve the problem.
galactus··on I was Zuckerberg’s speechwriter
> " A country or federal state is just a company with a monopoly over law in a certain geographical region. Facebook's "monopoly" is at least subject to the whim of the market"

Some countries are at least subject to the "whim" of democracy.

galactus··on Statistics, we have a problem
No, victim blaming is holding the victim at least partially responsible for the abuse, which is exactly what the comment does.
galactus··on Statistics, we have a problem
Textbook example of victim blaming.
galactus··on E Pur Si Muove
I agree that speech should be totally free, but, really, are we supposed to treat overtly racist ideas the same way we treat any relatively non harmful but perhaps mistaken theory?

If person A is a white supremacist, and person B thinks ether exists, am I supposed to treat them equally because otherwise I would be "ostracizing" person A?

galactus··on Americans Are Dying Younger, Saving Corporations Billions
Finally, some good news! /s
galactus··on Shame on Y Combinator
"the fundamental principle that no matter what in a democracy everyone have the right to say and mean what they want without having to fear the repercussions"

I think you are mixing things, Democracy does not give anyone the right to be liked even when they say awful stuff. Marco is not saying that supporting Trump should be illegal, he is saying that supporting Trump is shameful, and that supporting someone who supports Trump at such scale is shameful too.

galactus··on Languages: Why we must save dying tongues (2014)
I find it hard to believe Japanese engineers don't leave Japan because of the language. Perhaps most of them simply don't want to leave their country?
galactus··on The pressure that U.S. inequality exerts on parents
Interesting. How do you plan to keep the plebs from revolting once you eliminate the last vestige of social mobility?
galactus··on The pressure that U.S. inequality exerts on parents
So basically you are saying that poor kids have no "potential to succeed" and should be kept segregated?
galactus··on Have Static Languages Won?
In what sense are academia and corporate not "the real world"?
galactus··on Ruby Tricks
associative arrays could use an example illustrating when/why to use them
galactus··on Ask HN: I just got $100k in AWS credits, how should I use it?
mine dogecoin? (j/k)
galactus··on Why Hispanic-Americans live longer: A mystery that has puzzled researchers
what is a "true hispanic"?
galactus··on How startup Fab died
IKEA was a huge brand before the internet was there to make it important for people to type its name correctly..
galactus··on Bitcoin revealed: a Ponzi scheme for redistributing wealth
Very impractical if you want to use bitcoin as currency
galactus··on How Good Was Napoleon? (2007)
thanks for the link, I'm colombian and I didnt know the battle of Cartagena was considered that important. Blas de Lezo was badass as hell!
galactus··on Bat bomb
it seems almost as lax as the nobel peace prize...
galactus··on Thanks, HN: You helped discover a disease and save lives
Hello, I have VS too! I was actually one of the many people dr Schankin interviewed by phone for the first phase of the research that you mention. I have had it for nearly 25 years!
galactus··on Why I'm sending back Google Glass
Everyone would be ok with blind people keeping their augmented reality glasses on, the same way guide dogs get special treatment today. Why does it have to be an all or nothing thing?
galactus··on Children of parents in technical jobs at higher risk for autism
"There was no association with a mother’s occupation. However, children who had both parents in technical fields were at a higher risk of having a more severe form of autism."
galactus··on “Mostly functional” programming does not work
scheme is not really a pure functional language ("set!")

One of the things I like about Common Lisp is its "multi-paradigm" philosophy.

galactus··on Why Don’t We Have a General-Purpose Tree Editor?
Fargo is quite nice http://fargo.io/
galactus··on What Dreams May Come
I know, my point is that both "real" capitalism (the libertarian kind) and "real" communism are fantasies.
galactus··on What Dreams May Come
in that case, it can be argued that the soviet union was not real Communism either.
galactus··on Depixelizing Pixel Art
I wrote an implementation of this in common lisp when they published it:

galactus··on The French way of cancer treatment
it is not enough to have a free public service, tho. I have no idea about the Uk, but Canada also has free public healthcare yet it is so quite worse than the french system that it feels like they are not in the same league, imho.
galactus··on Why Bitcoin Matters
If you were paying taxes or employees like overstock does you'd have to convert to fiat, wouldnt you?
galactus··on Show HN: TipperCoin - Send Bitcoins over Twitter
It's fun to see bitcoiners get mad about it.
galactus··on LiteCoin is Causing Shortages of AMD Radeon GPUs
Doesnt the bitcoin network need mining to work? As far as I understand it, mining needs to be done forever, even if its impossible to collect new coins.
