gala8y··on A real-time 3D digital map of Tokyo's public transport system
Out of curiosity I checked few cameras and it looks like you're right.
gala8y··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
I know it's not on par with any real stats, but still... I just had this strong conviction that worked this way. The really interesting stuff is why it is so. I would think along lines of brain timing tossing and catching, eye-brain-timing rather than gravity and coin itself. Added: Yeah, now I remember actually manipulating timing of catch to achieve this.

> Trying not to be disrespectful

No worries, it is just me using high context communication style, where I assume that you know that I know this and I just share what was my experience in childhood (it was not like a single thought).

gala8y··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
No, not really.

This was my intuition in childhood. If you choose tails to be yours and start with tails then catch it, it is most likely to be tails. I came up with this observation myself. Weird.

> I should have just checked HN instead.

Generally, I would be very careful treating HN as a time saver. :)

gala8y··on Total cholesterol and mortality by sex and age:study of 12.8M adults
That's it. Though I did total opposite of detailed reading. I rounded all numbers to have them in ranges, trying to skim over details (but read slowly nevertheless). Once you understand what U-shape curve is and that it is probably key to the whole thing, you can unpack the abstract. You just need to know what U curve is.
gala8y··on 9/11 in Realtime
I think it does not work the way it was intended.
gala8y··on Ask HN: What is your software/approach to work with text?
I use Obsidian myself. Just started to work with bigger texts and got lost big time. As I mentioned in another comment, I realized it is also about regaining focus and getting in the flow.

> I pretty much never 'delete'

That's the tricky part. I try to cut quickly, but still want to have access to deleted parts somewhere.

gala8y··on Ask HN: What is your software/approach to work with text?
I think this looks very much like something I was after. Unfortunately it's not available for GNU/Linux. Anyway, I will have a look inside for some GUI/workflow ideas. Thx.
gala8y··on Ask HN: What is your software/approach to work with text?
I really wouldn't like you to monetize my idea. EDIT: /joke
gala8y··on Ask HN: What is your software/approach to work with text?
> I like to keep a scratch file

Thanks. I think I am doing something very similiar and will definitely stay close to bare text (Markdown). Your comment shows me that there is no escape from marking up text (places where sth was deleted or some auxiliary header) and working through text couple of times, probably making some copies along way.

> I'll also use diff tools built into Vim/Neovim

Diffing workflow is completely out of bauds for me, maybe will try to learn some new ways in close future (Vim/Spacemacs in general). If you could say some more on how you quickly see diffs, that would be great. Are you using version control for this?

As a side note, I see that it just takes time to tune mind to work efficiently with bigger pieces these days. Modern times, refocus req'ed.

Your comment was very helpful for me, thank you.

> Escapist Utopia > this desert playa

I hate that mocking style of writing, as if the editor in the office was delighted that the rain spoiled the fun for those free spirits, something he can't open within himself.

> A spokeswoman for Kimbal Musk didn’t immediately return a request for comment, and neither did a spokeswoman for Brin. Pierce also wasn’t immediately available for comment.

The editor even used their official channels to confirm the presence of certain well-known individuals. All from the comfort of their desk with a view of the city. Come on... It's pathetic.

EDIT: To add.. it is four souls in the office, who collaborated on this magnificent piece.

I'll pass on Rickdate, this would require too much time to become swift in it and advantage is dubious. I prefer to learn something else.

However, it's interesting what you mention about considering going further... Are you using portable sundial? Time feeling more specious when counted differently? I can absolutely feel it may be that way. Sleeping polyphasic? The way we count time can absolutely impact all of that. Seems you live in different frames of reference (Sun, polyhphasic,...) Could you please tell some more?

gala8y··on On keeping sketchbooks
I 'discovered' big-endian dating for myself as early as using first computers and been using them consistently over the years. It just sorts so well. I don't even use hyphens and eyes are trained to see year, month, day in 20230823 pretty quick. Used to add time with _ like this: 2023082_2340, now it is 20230823-2340. Generally I tend to always tag notes & sketches with date/time pretty much.

> Why do I keep them all? I really don’t know. But they’re fun to make and fun to look back at… even if the tower is getting a little unwieldy.

This collection is impressive and seems, from what author says, like it's a byproduct of a process and not goal in itself. I think its good to keep 'em this way.

gala8y··on On keeping sketchbooks
That is beautiful and gentle. Thanks for sharing.
gala8y··on On keeping sketchbooks
Absolutely. Internal Family Systems \ Voice Dialogue perspective enables this process to continue and deepen. I would say that IFS puts too much of an accent on trauma, healing, changing (it is therapeutic approach after all), where VD is (in my opinion) more allowing, more positive, less patologizing. It does not matter after all, the perspective of having these voices is key.

The money, they have too much money and it is causing problems big time.

Few days ago Democracy Now! on YT had a first-person interview about corporations, taking advantage of difficult situation, trying to buy out land from people who owned the land for generations. Can't find now in which video it was.

I haven't been using twitter for a long time, already. It just felt stupid to even still hold an account.
gala8y··on Ask HN: What are some self-hosted photo organizing/sharing programs?
I have 125k images and 57k photos totaling 280GB and it's smooth. I switched to desktop recently which definitely adds some points.
gala8y··on Ask HN: What are some self-hosted photo organizing/sharing programs?
Fan, too. Had some stability problems two years ago, now it's smooth. Having access to quickly shown thumbnails is yes or now for actually accessing photos/images and enjoying watching them and working with them.

I didn't try option to write to metadata for compatibility.

Will have a look at piwigo.

I followed through.
gala8y··on Twitter/X has removed all media posted before 2014
And I have removed my accounts. X was too much. No, thank you. One time Twitter was a nice place. That was a long time ago.
