gaiusparx··on On a New Road : James Gosling on Apple and Java
My guess: 1. the port of Java to Mac OS X Lion is affecting the schedule for a summer 2011 release for Lion. 2. Mac App Store is not accepting desktop Java app.
gaiusparx··on Things about the Mac that annoy new users from PC-land
> Based on the authors perspective, anything that is different is "annoying".

Agreed. It would be silly if Mac OS X allows you to configure it to behave like Windows.

I think cmd+delete is a better design than just delete key to delete. It makes you more aware of your delete action.

gaiusparx··on Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone
I'll bet its not a hardware phone. Rather a kind of Skype/Google Voice feature that will be added to its mobile clients. On your Facebook app for iphone example, there will be a new icon called "Phone" in addition to the existing News Feed, Inbox, Events, Photos etc.
gaiusparx··on Eric Schmidt: We'll pull Facebook's data by hook or by crook

gaiusparx··on Apple Relaxes iOS Restrictions On Development Tools, Publishes Review Guidelines
What is the pros for Apple beside being able to fend off FTC probe? If company starting to look at cross-platforms tools (such as one that develops for iOS, Android and Windows Mobile), and abandon Obj-C and XCode, will this weaken Apple strategically?
gaiusparx··on Boost your productivity with Conkeror, Instapaper and a Kindle
I think some people do have need for service like Instapaper. I just bookmark what I want to read in a "Inbox" folder on bookmark bar (or you can named it "Read-Later"). Then read it later. For conversion to text based reading, use Readability or viewtext.org. For bookmarks sync with multiple devices, xmark or mobile.me or Chrome bookmark sync.
gaiusparx··on As Digg Struggles, VP Of Engineering Is Shown The Door
The other problem is they have been hyping V4 for a long time by making beta testing invite only and hard to get. It would have been better if they can have a public V4 beta running in parallel with V3 since it is a rewrite.
gaiusparx··on Sony beat the Apple TV without Google TV
It is obvious that Apple's direction is streaming. Streaming from the cloud is easily done. Streaming from users content is via AirPlay. Apple probably looked at DLNA. It looks unlikely that AirPlay will support 'non-Apple' format such as divx, mkv, flac. And I hope Apple will change its mind. It is not a Flash vs non-Flash issue.

Will Apple TV turns into an app & games platform? I see alot of pluses. Something not in the interactive TV as we know today. I think this is coming, based on what Google is doing. Google probably has some inside info that Apple is developing such, thus Google is developing its own Google TV to compete. But I think Apple's implementation will be something different. Maybe: using your iPad/iPhone as controller, select the game you want to display on your TV and push it via AirPlay, the game will then load and play on Apple TV. Then you use your iPad/iPhone as controller to play the game.

gaiusparx··on Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping Social Network
It is more powerful than the follows in Facebook & Twitter for artists as it leads to direct buy $$ from their fans. They will definitely pay attention to Ping. I bet it will open up to movie stars, actors and authors in future.

If I'm not wrong, Ping could be just HTML pages within iTunes, as with some iTunes contents. So it is not difficult to be a standalone web app if Apple choose to.

gaiusparx··on My programming apps with one button on my Mac
Is there any difference from using System Preferences-> Accounts-> Login Items?
gaiusparx··on Who killed Prolog?
Interesting read. I'm just aware about the logic class of programming language: imperative (1956, Fortran), functional (1959, Lisp), object-oriented (1972, Smalltalk), logic (1974, Prolog). Some Erlang syntax is borrowed from Prolog, so is Erlang a logic programming language or functional (I always thought Erlang is functional)? What other language is under logic class?
gaiusparx··on Cloudant's BigCouch is Now Open Source
This one took out one advantage Riak has compared with CouchDB.
gaiusparx··on Ask HN: Requiring FB Connect, Will This Kill My Startup?
Personally I would not use FB Connect unless you're already a name I can trust.

If I'm not wrong, when you use FB Connect, you can capture only the user id. The disadvantage is you are not able to build a meaningful customer database, but this also depends if customers info is important to your startup. Secondly your startup will live and die with Facebook. This makes sense only if your startup is a Facebook app.

gaiusparx··on Google Acquires Angstro, a Social Networking Start-Up
Beside search, what are the other Google products that are developed in-house?

gaiusparx··on Mobile Flash Fail: Weak Android Player Proves Jobs Right
Just curious, if you are Flash app developer, are you considering moving to HTML5? Is HTML5 and JavaScript mature enough for the job? Is there a tool/utility that helps convert/migrate Flash codes to HTML5/JavaScript?
gaiusparx··on Posterous is being DDoS'd
So this is the 2nd DDOS attack. Can DDOS attack be fended off?
gaiusparx··on MongoDB 1.6 stable released
Anyone uses Riak? How does it compared with Mongo?
gaiusparx··on Google Kills Wave
Feel the same about killing it too soon. But then Google is Google and probably judge success in adoption rate base on the results with Gmail and Chrome.

My guess is there is an up coming project (Google Me?) that shares some similarity with Wave but is targeting the friends&family group rather than workgroup. They probably will not outsource Wave as some of its tech will find its way to this upcoming project.

gaiusparx··on Everyone Who Tried to Convince Me to Use Vim Was Wrong
Any reason why vim instead of emacs? I use textmate and might give vim/emacs a try again. Quite similar to your old experience.
gaiusparx··on Is that Hacker News web page optimized for iPad? Yes it is
Looks like the only thing missing is a nice looking icon 57x57 "apple-touch-icon.png".
gaiusparx··on As Campaign Ends, Was Calling Out "Dying Platforms" Good for Posterous?
Judging by the "huge" (any numbers Posterous?) short term bump, the campaign is successful for its publicity and buzz. But I doubt it will result in long term sustainable draw for Posterous. As the article rightly pointed out, many are also pissed at how it was carried out. I suspect many of those who signed up during the campaign are not actual switchers, but bloggers who created a Posterous account just to test out the import tool. Switchers or non-users whatever, Posterous at least has the number to show to their investors.
gaiusparx··on Google News redesign: "a lovely example of personalization done poorly"
Agreed with the article. I begin to dislike this Google design and look, too busy for me, same with Reader.

Is there an alternative to Google News?

gaiusparx··on Warning: App Store scrapers can discover apps before their release
You might want to file a bug report to Apple.
gaiusparx··on Dropbox is hiring a Web Engineer
Anyone can enlighten me why I keep seeing Zed Shaw being mentioned on HN compare to other star programmers? He appears to be the superstar among all star programmers. But I checked his wiki, and I thought not many are using mongrels nowadays.
gaiusparx··on Android gaining on Apple, says report
AdMob report on market share will not be as representative from July 01 when iAds goes live. Since AdMobers are now Googlers, expect to hear from them monthly that 'Android is gaining market' when many iPhone developers are expected to move their ads to iAds and out of AdMob radar. To me its meaningless data even though its common sense that Android is gaining market share due to its commodity nature with multiple vendors, and a recent version that is finally competitive. Tech blogs should publish reports from independent source with better data.
gaiusparx··on Could Ruby be Apple's language and API future?
I believe Obj-C will always be what Apple build their API frameworks. But it is possible that MacRuby will be an option in future for programming on iOS like it is on Mac OSX.

When I heard of MacRuby, I had this immediate crazy thought that Apple choose Ruby to piss off Google :-) You know Apple vs Google and Ruby vs Python, and Google is basically a Python house.

gaiusparx··on iOS Icons Made Purely Using CSS3
Impressive!
gaiusparx··on Restoring your iPhone 3G to OS 3.1.3
I think its case by case. Some find it faster after the upgrade. I suspect its cause by some data or apps during the upgrade. Some find it running alright after doing a clean install. Or maybe its specific to certain batches of iPhone 3G hardware we will never know. Apple is rumored to release 4.0.1 pretty soon, so hopefully it will solve this slow issue on 3G hardware. iOS 3.x code base is Leopard base. iOS 4 is Snow Leopard. So by right iOS 4 should run faster if not smoother on same hardware base on Leopard/Snow Leopard upgrade experience.
