gainda··on Casio to Release Ring Watch
I don't know if I'll get one but its adorable. It would pair nicely with my A-168W-1
gainda··on Notes on Guyana
It has become so exhausting doing this dialogue tree with Indian folks - particularly true for the older population. it's their opener for small talk...
gainda··on Google Podcasts service shuts down in the US next week
i like spotify for music & music discovery but trying to manage and track podcasts felt too disorganized. i like pocket casts instead.
gainda··on Akira Toriyama has died
seeing dragon ball z on toonami in the early 2000's changed my life. it was so much cooler than anything i had ever seen up to that point. my life revolved around coming home to watch a new episode. my brother would tape episodes on vhs so we could pause it and i could try to draw the scene. i almost ended up with an art degree in college after it sparked my artistic side. i don't think i would have ever been so interested in japanese culture had dragon ball not been that gateway
gainda··on Walmart to buy TV maker Vizio for $2.3B
anecdotally, i have a tcl 4k 49" model i got 2018 for $329 - and yes the stock interface is garbage, but after hooking up an apple tv to it, it works perfectly for me. i'm not particular about image quality - everything looks great for my taste and the soap opera effect is off. i would absolutely get another one if this craps out but getting 6 years out of it was more than i expected.

gainda··on Baldur's Gate 3 Wins Game of the Year at the Game Awards
i had to backtrack about three hours when i started act 3 since for some reason Karlach was saying our relationship had fizzled out. i had missed a lot of interactions from not visiting camp enough.

other than that i do remember the companions being really horny for me at the big camp party in act 1. i did find it jarring but one perspective that i liked was that you could look at it as casual sex - games usually treat sex as an end goal for relationship mechanics. its still hard to square it up with almost everyone wanting to get in your pants - but i think that's a by-product of making sure players have choice and i can live with that. it also only happened to me once and once i turned everyone down i wasn't interested in they left the matter alone ( except Gale lol )

gainda··on Joe Rogan Again Had Spotify's No. 1 Podcast in 2023
You may disagree but in these early sources a podcast is defined by Winer & Curry by how it is distributed.

gainda··on Joe Rogan Again Had Spotify's No. 1 Podcast in 2023
i think a podcast is more fundamentally about delivering audio content automatically than it is about user control. the term didn't originate until that function started happening. if it was an issue to be exclusive to one program then we absolutely would have a different term by now but society has been content to continue calling exclusive shows podcasts. shows that moved to Spotify are otherwise unchanged - so its not about control, its about how its distributed

gainda··on YOYOZO: How I made a Playdate game in 39 KiB
gosh seeing the gameplay unlocked an ancient memory ( read: 2007 ) of playing an indie game called xWUNG that had the same yoyo-ing effect.

i like the name. more modesty in this thread than i would have imagined - the creator isn't planning to monetize so is it really that big of a deal ?

my heart breaks when i read about the trees.

There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for this treachery.

gainda··on After luring customers with low prices, Amazon stuffs Fire TVs with ads
I will also add that in my experience it is typically recommending shows you are in progress with, or next in a queue, or on some list you have curated before recommending anything else. So quite handy at times.
gainda··on After luring customers with low prices, Amazon stuffs Fire TVs with ads
I've had a TCL Roku TV since 2018 and it was always sluggish using the apps through its default interface. I got an AppleTV last year and the ease of use & lack of input lag or advertisements was a breath of fresh air.
gainda··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
i worked in the field for seven years and saw some of this firsthand. i was the guy at the desk making the call and relaying the bad news from the back office. it always seemed deeply unfair & quite rich seeing as almost all of these institutions are busted for far more egregious behavior than what they suspect of the customers they de-bank.

one additional scenario that always stuck with me as to how wacky banks can stretch their power: i had a woman who had her own sole-owned accounts, a joint account with her mother, and her mother had her own accounts. the mother had overdrafted her sole account a few hundred dollars, and per the bank agreement, they took money from the joint account & the daughters sole-owned account to offset the balance. she was completely blindsided & distraught once it all became clear as anyone would be. how is that fair? this was in 2015. hopefully things have changed.

gainda··on A bold new look for the Gov.uk homepage
great point - i spent seven years in customer facing banking which included helping people with the mobile app. nearly everyone over 50 had large font sizes.

gainda··on Critically Acclaimed Horror Film of the 2010s or Your PhD Program?
for the purposes of satisfying the conditions this article is trying to adhere to it doesn't matter that it's the demon in the body now instead of the man, it matters that the male body was chosen over others.

however, if we do consider the demon, the movie has this to say about it:

1. A sentence underlined in pencil reads: "Paimon is Male, thus covetous of a male human body."

2. ... We’ve corrected your first body and give you now this healthy male host. ...

maybe the author is trying to say something about the demons masculine preference (it is covetous of, not dependent on - it was in Charlie first) & how that relates to theirs and others experiences in academia when it comes to preferential treatment; and that just male-ness seems to be important absent of any other qualifiers? after all the women in the movie more or less do all the work to appease Paimon - wouldn't the greatest reward as a devotee be to act as his host? maybe i'm crazy but it's been interesting to think about.

gainda··on Critically Acclaimed Horror Film of the 2010s or Your PhD Program?
I loved the concept and a lot of the imagery but yeah the ending skewed towards funny for me rather than scary. in the same vein, i loved annihilation for the same reasons but that ending was funnier than it was disturbing.
gainda··on Critically Acclaimed Horror Film of the 2010s or Your PhD Program?
the demon Paimon wanted ( and got ) a male host
gainda··on Brisk 22-minute walk could offset harmful effects of sitting, study suggests
seconded. of course, ideally you should do all three as best you can.

the way i always think about it is that humans are among the most efficient runners in the entire animal kingdom; some tribes in Africa still practice persistence hunting. so by extension, cardio is going to be the worst choice for weight loss - but the other benefits still make it worth it.

gainda··on Show HN: ArtistAssistApp – a web app to paint better with ease
they're referring to how an image will get perceived if its flattened in a photo v. experienced with binocular vision. drawing from life is taking 3D and making it 2D. drawing from a photo is taking 2D and keeping it 2D. also it did occur to me a photo will likely struggle to reproduce color as accurately as it occurs in real life. i mean just yesterday i pulled over to take a photo of the rising sun lighting up the underside of mammatus clouds and my iphone couldn't do it justice. i don't think the claim is silly; i was an art major at one point and went through this very discussion in my life drawing class.
