gaia··on Experts explore new mushroom which causes fairytale-like hallucinations
Paging https://paulstamets.com

PS: wouldn't it be nice to actually be able to ping his DID from anywhere?

gaia··on Google can now read your WhatsApp messages
On Pixel phones, it is possible to disable the app "AICore" https://i.imgur.com/BKJWFaj.png. I assume this disables Gemini also. I will confirm and write back.
gaia··on I've been using Claude Code for a couple of days
Agreed it is a step above the rest, but I find that it still needs some oversight you'd hope it doesn't. Simple stuff like rewriting stuff differently which yields the same result (to the naked eye, no need to even test it), to having to call it out when it misses things (update other scripts with the same problem, reflect the changes in the README or requirements.txt) and to ask it to try harder to solve an issue in a better way.

Sometimes it takes the easy way out. If you look up your billing, you will see sometimes it uses the 3.5 instead of the 3.7 API, maybe this has something to do with it. It apologies ("you are correct", "yes that was hasty") but I'd rather have it try harder every time, not only when called out (and foot the bill that goes with that ofc).

But overall the experience is great. I hope to use it for a few months at least until something else comes along. At the current pace, I switch subscriptions/API/tool at least once a month.

gaia··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
Wait, it gets worse: https://x.com/laurenbalik/status/1853850363004063977

-David Sacks bankrolled a company called Done Global. The "CEO" Ruthia He is a Chinese national with absolutely no medical experience. Very quickly, this turned into prescriptions for dead people, medspas doling out Adderall, the Chinese sharing health data about Americans as the whole back office was in China. Plenty of these narcotics ended up on the street, which was always the goal.

The CEO and several others are awaiting trial. They caught David Sacks-backed Ruthia He trying to flee to China about a month ago, and now she's back in jail.

-David Sacks had a whole money laundering operation set up around Eaze. His guy Keith McCarty left Eaze to found a payments system company (to support Eaze) and they have Keith McCarty with crack cocaine, prostitutes, and firearms rooming with a guy named Hamid Arkhavan involved in the Wirecard fraud, running up transactions to facilitate money laundering through porn sites. Eaze was a big advertiser on these sites to clear money laundering transactions.

-Earlier this year, conservative influencer Dave Rubin was caught up in a money laundering racket after he and his people were receiving payments from Russian assets, and the Russian fled the US overnight. Dave Rubin is another David Sacks-backed founder. Rubin was co-founder of the company Locals, which is extremely crappy Web 1.0 software used to facilitate payments to influencers. David Sacks sold this Locals plus his other company Callin, to Rumble $RUM and took a Board seat at Rumble.

There. Right there you have 3 David Sacks-backed founders all directly tied to money laundering and/or drug trafficking. Ruthia He. Keith McCarty. Dave Rubin.

Those are just the main ones with some amount of legal/media coverage on them, but there are more.

You still think Sacks is "just" a VC? The VC stuff is a front.

This isn't tech. This is the Mafia. Sacks just throws the word "software" over it to obfuscate it, but too many people have figured this out now.

He got too cocky after he and Lonsdale "lost" a bunch of foreign money with Hyperloop.

His prancing around is like watching an animal in a cage. He's got to negotiate his way out of this regardless.

gaia··on IPMI
ASRock IPMI, at least on X570D4U Ryzen 5000, is unusable. You can't turn on the firewall allow only specific IPs, it blocks everything. They said they have a beta firmware (> 01.39.00) to solve this, but it doesn't. Had to purchase a Spyder to add to the machine.

Supermicro's BMC UI on X11 does feel like 2004, but it is decently reliable. On the H13 series is even more stable and doesn't feel outdated.

gaia··on Redfin Is Leaving the National Association of Realtors
Sorry, the IQ/brain capacity/"insert a term that you are comfortable" with here required to be a lawyer is much higher than to be a real estate agent. It is much more accessible to the avg person to do at least 80% of the work an agent does, especially on the buy side. And count on AI doing 100% of it, on both buy and sell sides, much better and cheaper than real estate agents, in a matter of a couple of years, if not months.

The main reason RE agents play a significant role is the artificial stronghold around the MLS. It's not their Nobel prize winning brains providing irreplaceable services.

gaia··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
Unfortunately Trilium, the closest option to Evernote (as opposed to Notion), doesn't have an Android client (there is one to send notes but not search/read).

Looks like Joplin is the one checking all the right boxes (added plus of being able to sync via OneDrive, which is free, and with E2E I don't care which cloud it sits on)

gaia··on Google Search Is Dying (2022)
Countdown until someone builds a site that only appends "inurl:reddit.com" to every query and calls it Roogle.
gaia··on Choose your status game wisely
This reminds me much of the Dutch society. Although I'm not Dutch, I've lived there twice, and I frequented both old, new and no money circles. What struck me the most among Dutch was how similar a blue collar worker and the president of KLM would look riding a bike down the street.
gaia··on Windows Defender is enough, if you harden it
Is there something you could say about complementing Defender with paid MalwareBytes? Is there too much overlap to justify this? Or is performance hindered more than the additional benefit accrued (not that I feel it, system is responsive enough)?
gaia··on Google's Abandoned Android Authenticator App
Surprised there (this far) no mention of Authenticator Plus (https://www.authenticatorplus.com/) here. I welcome scrutiny of this option (but I am not affiliated in any capacity with them)
gaia··on Bye, Chrome: Why I’m switching to Firefox (2018)
If you NEED extensions, you should consider Vivaldi. Chrome engine, but doesn't require login to google and has better default privacy settings.

gaia··on The Most Expensive Lesson of My Life: Details of SIM Port Hack
You can use Authenticator Plus, which cloud syncs your 2FA DB on every add/delete/update you make to any of your 2FA accounts.
gaia··on Leaving Google Fi
International roaming at no extra cost is great, but if you leave Google Fi you can pay for that when you needed it.

The real reason to stick with Google Fi is: it's the only carrier (ok, MNVO) that requires 2FA for a SIM swap.

gaia··on Warp – Mobile VPN
@eastdakota, I have 1.1.1.1 at router level but when I installed the app it told me I wasn't using 1.1.1.1.

Is this by design or there is possibly something wrong with my router's DNS setup?

gaia··on I stopped using Intercom
Could they be as bad as NewRelic sales people?
gaia··on Google Maps won't let you save home address without allowing all Google tracking
I've switched to the Vivaldi browser after all these privacy undermining "features" Google has been rolling out.

But I am happy Android now allows setting your own DNS - you are no longer restricted to Google DNS. I am waiting for X-Privacy to be made available for Android 9.

Apple products are not an option for me. It's Linux, Windows and Android in my world.

gaia··on Intel Publishes Microcode Patches, No Benchmarking or Comparison Allowed

Thought frequently mentioned, Phoronix did not run a benchmark comparing before and after application of the microcode update. Excerpt: To note, no microcode changes/updates were made to the systems under test for this article, just testing/comparing the kernel patches (https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=l1tf-for...)

gaia··on The Cost to Mine a Single BTC Throughout 115 Different Countries
Those countries have cheap (hydro for Myanmar and carbon for the rest) based energy sources, but are not stable politically nor economically.

Iceland has plenty of renewable energy and a stable economy. With renewable energy your cost is nearly all upfront with practically free energy from there on. It is suitable for long term investment.

gaia··on Alex Honnold Scales El Capitan Without Ropes, and the Climbing World Reels
To me this quote is the best gauge of how incredible of a human feat this was.

"One way to measure the greatness of any sporting achievement might be to consider the amount of time that passes before it’s achieved again. New world records are set in virtually every single Olympics. Every year brings new sports stars who stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. Look at someone like Usain Bolt, who has a dominant record in the 100-meter dash that might last for generations. The difference is, lots of people can run the 100 meters (albeit not quite as fast as Bolt).

Honnold, meanwhile, is performing in an event that no one else is even qualified, much less willing, to participate."

what if elon signs up as elon@spacex.com. he then fills out a personal details form, which includes a phone number. if a 2nd user comes around and enters the same unconfirmed email within 48hrs he'd get to see those personal details.

this surely only works in very specific situations...

same here, on a daily basis. worse when my email is supplied by someone else to a party that does not confirm AND there is no way to unsubscribe (such as Best Buy's geek squad's email). my gmail delete filter list is 50+ items now.
