gagabity··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Not only that cars are mode more and more impossible to repair by any random person by manufacturers on purpose.
gagabity··on Shopify moves back to Native from React Native
Legend List is the new hotness in RN.
gagabity··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
Yes pretty much have to do it for work or at the very least deal with AI PRs and reviews. Also it now feels kinda silly to do it manually even for personal projects because I know there is a faster/better? way and before I wasn't doing it to be hardcore I was just doing it because that's what needed to be done now doing it by hand is like people who enjoy working with those old punch card computers which is a thing but not really the same. The broader ecosystem where you could get help like stackoverflow is also disappearing so I am not even sure how you would solve tricky undocumented issues now maybe by digging really deep into the systems but doesn't seem practical.
gagabity··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
A big part of the journey is the exact thing AI took away though! The destination mostly has remained.
gagabity··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
They are foing to store it underground in plastic covered hole? Would this really cause an issue just to dump it into the ocean maybe spread out a bit?
gagabity··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
And Amazon going to add their own 100k, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about
gagabity··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Their Composer model (trained Kimi) is kinda amazing.
gagabity··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
Fixed a nasty bug in one of my tests where a mock in a completely different test I had never worked on was incorrectly setup and intercepting my mocks, I don't think I would have found it ever because the amount of effort it would have taken means I would have needed to move on to some other way to test.

Reverse engineered an old audio recorder USB driver which only works in windows 7 and also reverse engineered the custom audio encoding the device uses and the software to convert it to a standard wav file. This took recording the USB traffic with Wireshark for each function in the original software in a VM then disassembling the various dlls and exes and driver files and feeding them into Clause step by step.

That AI button in DataDog not only diagnosed the problem across micro services but also created a fix PR. I think we might be unemployed soon.

gagabity··on The Theatre of Pull Requests and Code Review
I never read the commit messages always straight to changed files.

Also find doing it like this either incredibly hard or have to do a ton of git magic after I'm done to get commits into this state which is very frustrating.

I think it might be the codebase I work on but who knows.

gagabity··on The Theatre of Pull Requests and Code Review
Yes! I once read a great article I can no longer find that talked about 3 types of PRs. Simple ones that you self approve. Ones that you tag someone because you want to spread the knowledge of what has been done. And ones that need actual review. Everything being reviewed is simply unnecessary and exhausting.
gagabity··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
To replace something with the momentum of React both as tech and an industry "standard" you are going to need something which provides an incredible leap forward and is pushed by someone with very deep pockets, its hard to see it happening. The negatives if any of React simply aren't big enough to go for a less popular framework
gagabity··on I want to leave tech: what do I do?
Moving to a much cheaper country is probably the way if you have money saved up or can sell a house.
gagabity··on High-Fidelity Simultaneous Speech-to-Speech Translation
Yandex Browser has been doing this for Russian for a while, if you go to YT it offers to translate to Russian, it does multiple speakers and voices from what I remember. Not sure if all the technicalities are the same.
gagabity··on Meta Battles an 'Epidemic of Scams' as Criminals Flood Instagram and Facebook
This is also maybe why a lot of people cant open a FB account without getting immediately banned and demanding you either send id or take a selfie video to prove you are human.
gagabity··on What should third world dev do in this economy?
You are mostly asking the wrong people, the reality for most in here has absolutely nothing to do with your situation, they can hardly comprehend it.

Look at what other people in your community did or ask them. As someone who left a developing country I would say get a degree any degree really and then get a job and some savings, you can then apply to a masters program abroad, a lot of countries this will be free with or without scholarships you might even get a stipend. EU especially.

gagabity··on Donkey Kong champion wins defamation case against Australian YouTuber Karl Jobst
His records have all been reinstated both by Twin Galaxies and Guinness Worls Records for whatever that's worth.
gagabity··on Review of Mullvad VPN
CIA
gagabity··on Kagi Translate
Some bugs to iron out

"Document Too Long Document is too long to process. It contains 158 chunks, but the maximum is 256. Please try again later or contact support if the problem persists."

gagabity··on Amazon is trying to trick me into signing up for Prime services
Yep, even for me who has never signed up its constant on every check out, no way to refuse permanently and they keep moving things around until one day I slip up.
gagabity··on OpenAI is good at unminifying code
Wonder how it does against other obfuscation and general decompiled code fixing.
gagabity··on Open-source tool translates and dubs videos into other languages using AI
Cool what languages can it do?

Yandex browser does the most impressive version of this and for free but only to Russian I believe, its quite amazing it does appropriate different voices and follows the correct intonation for everyone, just takes a few seconds for a YT video.

gagabity··on An FDA approved device offers a new treatment for tinnitus
There are a lot of people who have had this side effect but its difficult to search for info without running into full blown conspiracy theories or people treating you like an anti-vaxer.
gagabity··on Object that slammed into Florida home was space junk for ISS, NASA confirms
Time to get paid!
gagabity··on An FDA approved device offers a new treatment for tinnitus
I also had it before but the 3rd vaccine shot amplified it maybe 3-5x for a few months, it was like a siren when trying to sleep, thank god it back to its normal level which I forget about most of the time.
gagabity··on Show HN: AI dub tool I made to watch foreign language videos with my 7-year-old
This is great, I tried to do a similar thing once but my language is one of those that AI doesnt do well.

I think you can look into muting the original voice in the video, I remember I saw there is some AI/tech that can separate audio into voice and nonvoice.

Yandex browser does this in the browser, you open a YT video and it offers to translate, a few seconds later the voices are all in Russian, it's probably the most interesting production use of AI I have seen and for free. It's to Russian only unfortunately.

gagabity··on Amazon blocks long-running FireTV capability, Breaking apps with no warning
Probably people are using adb to disable ads or something?

Amazon has indicated that they are creating their own TV OS in Rust running ReactNative Apps and going away from Android although it might take a few years.

gagabity··on How we turned the tide in the roach wars
You need to go to your local China Town and get the real poison the type that Amazon/Walmart wont sell. Roaches start moving out on their own when they see that stuff.
gagabity··on The Seamless Communication models
Can this do speech to text English -> English? Get strange results if I do a translation to the same language would be an interesting alternative to Whisper if it could.
gagabity··on The Seamless Communication models
I had pretty terrible results when I tried English -> Swahili I'm using the Huggingface M4T V2 spaces, it pretty much doesn't work most of the time and I just get English back with a different voice, Expressive on the other hand only has a few languages it seems.

It would be nice if they could layout what exactly is missing in terms of data to make a language work better, while the actual AI bit is out of reach for most of us maybe we could provide more data.

There is also a 60 sec limit and wonder if this is HuggingFace limitation or Seamless?

gagabity··on Ask HN: Where do you sit?
Ikea Pöang recliner, you know the one. Because you are reclined its difficult to be hunched over but you need to positions your monitors accordingly.
