gadders··on How Much Has Trump Made from Crypto? ($1.4B from 2025 Federal Disclosure)
That's only the last sentence, and I've deleted it for you. Why not engage with the thrust of the argument?
gadders··on Astra and Fable still hack on simple variants of alignment evals from 2025
Is the law all that is stopping you from killing someone? (for instance)

People (generally) do the right thing because it is the right thing, not because they might get caught,

gadders··on Astra and Fable still hack on simple variants of alignment evals from 2025
We can make these things smarter faster than we can make them "good" (ethically).

We need to fix this or bad things will happen.

gadders··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
"Hello, ex-military person. If I put $10,000,000 worth of bitcoin in your wallet, can you do X for me please?"
gadders··on I've factored the RSA keys of a Certificate Authority from the 90s
I womder if you could do the old Lotus Notes weak non-US Keys now, and if there are any old .nsf files floating around to be decrypted.
gadders··on Ask HN: Why don't we bring back old school OkCupid?
The future will be an AI that acts as a matchmaker via a chat interface.

"Hi, I'm looking for someone in my area age [x-y], has a professional role.."

"I have Claire on my list. She's X years old, works as an accountant, and her requirements seem similar to yours. Shall I ping her and see what she thinks?"

gadders··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
If it had never happened, maybe sport would be some platonic ideal but if you look at the premier league, it seems to function OK as a sports league comparable to the NFL, despite people loading up on accas for fun.
gadders··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
"A more recent survey in 2022, conducted by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission found that 'headline problem gambling rate is statistically stable at 0.2%. The moderate risk and low risk rates are also statistically stable at 0.9% and 1.4% respectively.'[45]"

gadders··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
I don't see any country limitation in the original comment.
gadders··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
You do realise that countries other than the USA exist, right? The UK has had various forms of sports gambling legal for nearly 100 years and society hasn't crumbled and neither did sport.
gadders··on A Selection of Los Alamos Rolodex Business Cards
I miss not having business cards any more.
gadders··on Were Claude's Weekly Limits Cut in Half? (and obscured by another 50% "deal"?)
It does seem to swing a bit from week to week.

Somethings do take surprisingly more tokens than others. EG: generate some code vs search the web to find me the best hiking boots for less than £100.

gadders··on Y Combinator's Ankit Gupta faces backlash over H-1B comments
Lol. Indians aren't hired because they're better. They're hired because they're cheaper.
gadders··on Y Combinator's Ankit Gupta faces backlash over H-1B comments
Because a country is not an economic unit.
gadders··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
From my exclusive with Opus 5 it assumes and awful lot and gets caught out. I keep having to ask it to check what it is saying against the code.
gadders··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Perhaps people in the constituency like Farage and want a Reform government.
gadders··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
They're normally called a shadow fleet because they turn off their transponders when they head into territorial waters.
gadders··on Claude users are mad that Anthropic's new watermarks will catch them using it
It's not a case of needing a crutch. It's how you value your time. "Shall I spend 30 mins grammar checking this product marketing copy, or shall I get AI to do it while I start work coding a new feature?"
gadders··on Claude users are mad that Anthropic's new watermarks will catch them using it
This is a dumb idea by Claude. It's currently a binary switch and doesn't differentiate between "fix the grammar on this paragraph" and two pages of AI Slop.

There should at least be some cut off where it applies and where it doesn't.

gadders··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
It's always China: https://www.reuters.com/graphics/CHINA-ARGENTINA/FISHING/gkp...
gadders··on The Ultimate Horse
I don't know why the article goes on so much about Secretariat. Flat races are horse races on easy mode. Steeplechases are proper horse racing
gadders··on LinkedIn CringeBot 3000
I think it depends what your career is. It used to be that developers hated it because during the ZIRP era they were being spammed with badly fitting job offers from sketchy recruiters.

Now that the market has tanked, their feelings may have softened somewhat.

And some of the industry posts can be interesting.

gadders··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
"It was developed in the last 6 months" and "It was developed 50 years ago and millions of people around the world have used it with no ill effects" doesn't really require a degree in biochemistry to evaluate the possible risks.
gadders··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
I don't think they were developed in less than 6 months, and probably had more testing (and have had far more since).
gadders··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
Yeah. People are lumping all vaccines together in an attempt to boost the credibility of the COVID vaccine. Unfortunately what it is actually doing is ruining the credibility of all the other vaccines that have been around for years and are well understood.
gadders··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Where "policing by consent" means "only policing people who won't react violently when we try and prosecute them for breaking the law".
gadders··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
When I went to NZ about 30 years ago, vibe-wise Auckland was like LA and Wellington was like Seattle. Not sure if that comparison still holds.
gadders··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
It tried to, but a relatively new watch and not an easy button combo.
gadders··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
I was running on a treadmill a few weeks back, and was knackered so stopped abruptly by jumping into a straddle position with my legs on the rails either side of the actual band on the treadmill. My smartwatch interpreted this as a fall and sent a red alert to my daughter.
gadders··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
There will always be a place for common sense - the Greeks used to call it phronesis or "practical wisdom".

You also need to distinguish between expert opinion and elite opinion. The two are not the same.
