… is resistant to change? They have always been at the forefront of hardware innovation/experimentation, I'm sure they wouldn't be against it.

That's being addressed by the new Web-interoperable Runtimes Community Group https://wintercg.org/, driven by Deno and others.
I'm considering them for an upcoming project.
This should be on the wall of every developer's workplace.
I usually go for the command line and only reach for a GUI if I made a lot of changes that should be committed separately and Github Desktop doesn't work with signed commits at all.
