gabrielhidasy··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I'm 99% sure the hardening part was a joke
gabrielhidasy··on Dear people who work at the airport
Usually the rule is that the personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, the carry-on may be a bit larger.

I have boarded with a wheeled carry-on + wheeled personal item (a backpack with wheels) in the past, but every time the gate agent tested the personal item for size.

gabrielhidasy··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
But a gas burning furnace can have 100% efficiency, that is trash compared to what I get from a heat pump considering a gas power-plant (60%) * national grid efficiency (90%) * heat-pump 500% efficiency where I am (combined efficiency around 270%, or 2.7 times the gas furnace).

The only gas-based solution to get close would be using a gas generator at home (30%) to power the 500% heat-pump, and routing the 70% of waste heat inside (to get a combined 220% efficiency).

But that heavily depends on the heat-pump efficiency, which will depend on your ambient heat and instalation.

gabrielhidasy··on Why is everyone trying to build a solid-state battery?
Depends, if you are turning that electricity into heat using a heat-pump you might win on most situations (maybe lose if the weather is really cold outside, unless you add geothermal loops, but then its a lot more expensive to make)
gabrielhidasy··on A game where you're an OS and have to manage processes, memory and I/O events
Pretty cool, I would love to see a version where you code the tasks instead of madly click on stuff.
gabrielhidasy··on IBM debuts sub-1 nanometer chip technology
Just get better marketers to say your 2nm process has more gates per sqmm than your competition 1nm process.
gabrielhidasy··on Mercurial, 20 years and counting: how are we still alive and kicking? [video]
Case in point is Magit, I use Mercurial almost every day at work so git got a bit unfamiliar, but Magit is still more natural then mercurial for me.
gabrielhidasy··on I'm going back to writing code by hand
That's not the point, the point is they can generate pretty good code, and do that most of the time, so ask them to generate the code, review it as you would review a more junior teammate or an opensource collaboration from an unknown source, and take advantage of their speed to test everything.

You can't make a great vibe-coded thing that you couldn't make yourself, but you can get pretty much the same code you would have made in a fraction of the time.

gabrielhidasy··on The MacBook Neo
Why would I inflict that to my friends?
gabrielhidasy··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
I'll bet the confusion stems from the rest of the world having essentially forgotten what is a check/cheque almost a generation ago.

I only used them twice in my life, last one was in 2012 and I had to get a supervisor at the bank to find the procedure to get a checkbook at the time.

gabrielhidasy··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
Tap a bankcard? You can even tape it to the back of your phone
gabrielhidasy··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
They are still not great for high refresh rate, but I have a boox note air4C that can do fast-enough for video. It gets some ghosting (although it should be minimal for typing as you are fully changing from white to $color, backspaces might be a problem though). You will need a full refresh when scrolling but that is fast enough.
gabrielhidasy··on Fix HDMI-CEC weirdness with a Raspberry Pi and a $7 cable
Usually receivers are intended for passive speakers, a lot of the bulk is for housing and cooling amplifiers.

If your speakers are active and don't need an amp, you can use a HDMI audio extractor, those are pretty small (mine is about half the size of my phone)

gabrielhidasy··on The "confident idiot" problem: Why AI needs hard rules, not vibe checks
Sometimes the model responds well to threats too, "you are a programmer at a large tech company, you depend on this job and will not be able to find another. There's a layoff incoming, implement this feature or else..."
gabrielhidasy··on Let's put Tailscale on a jailbroken Kindle
Not OP, but maybe also against buying stuff with DRM in the first place?
gabrielhidasy··on Cloudflare outage on December 5, 2025
That will depend on how you structure your deployments, on some large tech companies, while thousands of changes little are made every hour, and deployments are mande in n-day cycles. A cut-off point in time is made where the first 'green' commit after that is picked for the current deployment, and if that fails in an unexpected way you just deploy the last binary back, fix (and test) whatever broke and either try again or just abandon the release if the next cut is already close-by.
gabrielhidasy··on Self-hosting a Matrix server for 5 years
Isn't the scheme simply agreeing in a shared key and both using it? I'll know that the message is from you if it's signed with that key and is not from me and vice versa, but neither of us can prove who created the message.
gabrielhidasy··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
If it's for your own projects, for yourself only, ADB still works without this verification.
gabrielhidasy··on TODOs Aren't for Doing
TODO: Remove the 'FillInData' function call after bug/<id> is fixed.
gabrielhidasy··on TODOs Aren't for Doing
What? What's 'TODO' about the second TODO in the article?

>> // TODO: If the user triple-clicks this button, the click handler errors because [xyz]

That could be a simple comment, but if its a TODO it should be ´TODO(bug/<id>): Fix triple-click error in this button´.

If you really want to tag a normal comment, what about // NOTE?

gabrielhidasy··on Impacts of adding PV solar system to internal combustion engine vehicles
Or just keep the car fan running and use the existing AC system (in ventilation mode, no compressor) to keep the car just as hot as outside (instead of much hotter). If you have some spare power maybe even run the AC when the key gets back in range.
gabrielhidasy··on Impacts of adding PV solar system to internal combustion engine vehicles
There are places where a marginally open window will invite vandalism, or rain, or bugs, or smoke and bad smells.
gabrielhidasy··on Show HN: TokenDagger – A tokenizer faster than OpenAI's Tiktoken
Depends on your definition of "right" and "work". It could be a big ball of mud that always returns exactly the required response (so it 'works'), but be hellish hard change and very picky about dependencies and environment (so it's not 'right').
gabrielhidasy··on Show HN: TokenDagger – A tokenizer faster than OpenAI's Tiktoken
I always heard the "Make it Right" as "Make it Beautiful", where Right and Beautiful would mean "non-hacky, easily maintainable, easily extendable, well tested, and well documented"
gabrielhidasy··on MCP is eating the world
Any chance they want someone that got the "Microsoft Certified Professional" badge 8 years ago or more?
gabrielhidasy··on Why JPEGs still rule the web (2024)
> However, perhaps are you talking about an image on JPEG XL, using features only in JPEG XL (24 bit, HDR, etc...) that obviously couldn't be converted in a lossless way to a JPEG.

So he was not wrong about this. You have perfect JPEG -> JPEG XL conversion, but not the other way around.

gabrielhidasy··on Attempting to Make the Smallest* Electric Motor [video]
And the "Helix" design looks just like the Aram espresso, a bit less obvious concept (a screw), but very similar.
gabrielhidasy··on Stack Overflow is almost dead
The article talks about the number of questions asked in SO, but there are no mentions of visualizations.

Feels natural that after 16 years of refinements, most normal questions are already there. I use it every week, but can count on one hand the number of questions I asked (0 through my account) over 12 years of having an account. ~All my questions were already asked.

gabrielhidasy··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
Requiring special care for a common usage, that's a hallmark of bad design.
gabrielhidasy··on Triforce – a beamformer for Apple Silicon laptops
Why, are they not able to reject these types of noise? My X1 doesn't even register typing in a video call
