gabrielhidasy··on Chromebooks will get 10 years of automatic updates
On the other hand, considering we are talking about kids breaking laptops, this failures are much more random, a brand new laptop is not that much more likely to survive a fall than an old one.
gabrielhidasy··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is 970KB uncompressed, 228KB with bzip2. You may be able to compress the whole thing in 1MB with some effort.

gabrielhidasy··on Cool, but obscure X11 tools (2019)
Last time I had to do that, it was on Windows 11 on a friends PC that was unexpectedly using 1024x768 on his 4k HDR monitor.

Glad I don't have to deal with that, Arch just works

gabrielhidasy··on A 1914 silent film considered lost was rescued from a vault
So you are talking about a detonation, a specific type of explosion that involves a supersonic wave, almost everything you would see as a munitions expert would be one of those.

A dictionary definition of explosion is "a rapid expansion in volume associated with extreme outward release of energy", that includes things like, gunpowder deflagration, aerolized gasoline burning, or even a pressurized container (like a pressure cooker) rupturing. Film burning on a metal tin as they were stored could fit this definition pretty well.

gabrielhidasy··on DIY Adapter: Using an e-bike battery to run a laptop
My P1 (G4) gladly accepts power over USB-C, depending on what I'm doing the 80W my monitor supplies are not enough and it slowly discharges, but it's enough to keep it going for a day's worth of work and recharge over night.

Except that it does not unlock full power unless the slim-tip is there. It is a bit slower but on the plus side it is dead quiet and runs a lot cooler.

gabrielhidasy··on Open source espresso machine is one delicious rabbit hole inside another
They are not sending good baskets with the Bambino? The baskets on the Infuser are reasonably good, just a bit weird as they are a bit narrower on the base.

The trick is getting a kettle that fits the brew chamber on top, so it steams while the water boils, I use a bonavitta with a mesh strainer as it's mouth is a bit too wide, but it seems like the fellow is almost a perfect fit.

gabrielhidasy··on Write Posix Shell
In my 12 years of python I was hit with compatibility problems once, in a school project where someone started in python 2 and we changed for python 3. What libraries break that often so I can stay away?
gabrielhidasy··on Show HN: Find the most climate friendly meeting location
Unless it's accounting for no direct flights between Caracas and San Francisco, which would mean either the Caracas person needs to fly to SF connecting in Houston, or both go to Houston in a direct flight, meet there and go back. It's the same 4 takeoffs.

(Disclaimer, I have no idea if there are direct flights from Caracas to SF, but from Brazil I always need to stop by in a hub)

gabrielhidasy··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
I'm not aware of much fusion happening between different lenses (although I saw an article using that for better portrait mode bokeh), but AI is used to stack multiple images from the same sensor. You can do de-noise, HDR and other stacking stuff with clever code, but AI just makes it better.
gabrielhidasy··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
Looks like the goal was to procrastinate less on hobbies and personal stuff, hiring someone to do that stuff would not solve anything.
gabrielhidasy··on How a heat pump works
They literally are more efficient than burning gas, a good heat pump can do over 300% efficiency (KWs of heat in your house vs KWs of electricity used) while a furnace can only hope to get 100%. Even if the heat pump is fed from gas power plants (which burn gas with about 50-60% efficiency, more if the waste heat is reused), they are still using less gas for the same amount of heat than directly burning it.
gabrielhidasy··on Method for reducing coffee acidity
I've experimented a bit with adding some bicarbonate to very acidic espressos. It mutes the flavor a little bit but completely kills the harshness that made it unpleasant. It is not a fix for under-extraction though, it fixes beans that are just not good for espresso.

A tiny bit of salt works wonders for very bitter espressos from overly roasted beans.

But on the end buying beans I like is easier and makes even better coffee than those hacks.

gabrielhidasy··on DIY Raspberry / Orange Pi NAS That Looks Like a NAS – 2023 Edition
Mine is running from a micro-SD card (+adapter on the old boards) since... I don't know, which year did the Pi 2 came out? It's not the same Pi anymore, but I'm re-using that 8gb card ever since.
gabrielhidasy··on Tell HN: The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is an excellent MacBook replacement
But some have enough memory that you would probably not miss the SO-DIMMs, I mean, do you have a workload needing more than 32GB that you would run in the notebook (with the limited CPU and thermal constraints)?

But just 8GB in a non-upgradeable package is not for me.

gabrielhidasy··on Tell HN: The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is an excellent MacBook replacement
You don't, that would be using it wrong, like holding a phone touching it's sides /s
gabrielhidasy··on Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market
Just use Nextcloud then, your own drives on your home, but no risk of losing pictures if your phone is lost/stolen/broken between backups. Can also automate the encrypted offsite thing.
gabrielhidasy··on The art of the desk setup (2021)
I honestly feel it's easier to type fn (caps and \ when hold in my board) + numbers for f-keys than to use dedicated ones.

Now 40%, that's too little keys, a number row is important

gabrielhidasy··on 'Golden parachutes' for fired Twitter executives worth $122M, research firm says
They were also very likely big shareholders, potentially earning more from the deal then the parachute, so... Both?
gabrielhidasy··on Leveraging mispriced AWS spot instances
Anything that you can easily checkpoint/finish quickly, while needing a ton of computers to do, map-reduce type jobs.

For example, let's say you need to process a few million images, each taking a few seconds to process. You can start a manager task that distributes images, and a pool of interruptible workers, when a worker dies you just reissue the images to another.

gabrielhidasy··on You can't buy a Raspberry Pi right now
I run my homeserver in a Lenovo m920q I bought for about 300USD (but it's a 32GB, 1TB NVMe 9th gen i5 model, there are models from like 100USD up). These 1-liter PC's are amazing, almost completely silent, idles at like 4W, but has enough grunt to transcode for plex and other stuff like that.
gabrielhidasy··on How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
So now instead all devices can keep their fans on and melt compartment material bag as nobody would assume the device is that dumb to not sleep when closed. Much better.
gabrielhidasy··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
That's almost what I wanted from Lenovo with the X1 Fold, I already have space to carry around a 14" notebook, I gain nothing on a device that's half the size, but twice the screen on the same space, that would be awesome.
gabrielhidasy··on Varo Bank could run out of funds by year-end
But that's just a terrible financial system, in Brazil you would just wire that money, possibly with a call to your manager to ensure the transaction is ok. But even if you want to use a literal antique like a cheque, you should be able to specify who will be able to cash it out and the money should not leave your account before that is done.

(last time I got a cheque was 2 decades ago as an already semi-dead payment method)

gabrielhidasy··on Billing systems are a nightmare for engineers
Come to Brazil, we have taxes on products 'circulating', moving your products between logistic centers is OK, but if the product is lost or stolen, taxes are due (as if it was a sale).

Some tax regulations were considered illegal by higher authorities, but that won't stop a tax auditor in a local level charging them and potentially closing down your business.

gabrielhidasy··on Ask HN: How do you manage – and remember to manage – your to-do list in 2022?
Only differences from mine are that I use TODO.org instead of .md, and I send emails to myself for more urgent tasks
gabrielhidasy··on Twitter Terms of Service Diff
It's not for free, we build communities to participate in them.
gabrielhidasy··on The next Google
What? Professionals customize their workspace to make it more efficient all the time.

Just that exactly is the workspace changes a lot, the hardware internals are hardly ever a consideration for any professional, it's easier to just buy something that works well from the start (and hardware costs peanuts).

gabrielhidasy··on Python 3.11 in the Web Browser
A 20MB interpreted bundled in the browser is basically nothing considering the browser sizes. A 20MB script in a page is massive.
