gabaix··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
Not debating the merits of this case.

There are many regulations that slightly inconvenience the many, to address the problems of a few. Individually these cases are benign. As a group they compound complexity.

Each new reform should be evaluated on both its benefits and the burden that it brings.

gabaix··on Uganda's surveillance state is built on national ID cards
As citizen in France, we also had an old democracy. Under Nazi Germany occupation it took no time for the ruling party to oppress ennemies of the state. Jews were hunted down using the National n database of names and addresses.

I do view technology as a double edged sword for the freedom of the people.

gabaix··on Why do some leading geologists reject the term "Anthropocene"?
> In the interest of full disclosure, I should note that I am an Anthropocene partisan.

It would have helped if the author had mentioned this at the beginning of the article. Or they had let someone neutral write the article entirely.

gabaix··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
Does YC publish active users count?

In its absence one can use public metrics like active commenters count.

gabaix··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
Company CEO says Company product will be very important.
gabaix··on Evernote has laid off most of its US staff and will move operations to Europe
For having set up businesses on both sides, Europe was more expensive in time wasted in paperwork. There is also a lot of old rules and weird fiscal policies. In the US setting up and running a business was relatively a breeze.
gabaix··on Cormac McCarthy has died
The epilogue of The Road shows its purpose. Make us appreciative of today’s nature beauty.
gabaix··on Widely used chemical strongly linked to Parkinson’s disease
Some of the most populated zones of the Bay Area are built on top of superfund sites, which have high concentration of TCE underground.

gabaix··on French workers protest plan to increase retirement age
This comment is good illustration of why most democratic gouvernements lose support over time. The media collect a list of disappointing behaviors, social media push said content to disgruntled citizens, and the government loses all credibility over time.

The ability for a government to not slip is crucial for slowing the decay.

gabaix··on ChatGPT Plus
I was shown BTT 10 years ago and to this day I still use it. Thank you for making Mac a better place.
gabaix··on Life Is Short (2016)
We can do much better in automation.

Entrepreneurs I know are reluctant to hire because it does not scale. Yet they do hire, slowly and surely. They need these jobs, as they cannot grow without it.

Similarly they complain about the lack of talent. Most of the people they value do not want the regular job that they offer. They need the people who want the regular jobs.

I am sure this will change. Yet today it is the reality.

gabaix··on The Making of Dune II: The birth of the real-time strategy game
Thanks for adding notes! I only know Ulrich, from knowing his nephew.

To this day, it is impressive to me what few people could achieve back then.

gabaix··on The Making of Dune II: The birth of the real-time strategy game
One of the two creators of Dune is Philippe Ulrich. He did most of the design and development, including the digital soundtrack.

Here is a recent interview of him (in French): https://www.cnc.fr/jeu-video/actualites/philippe-ulrich---av...

gabaix··on Meta slashes hiring plans, girds for 'fierce' headwinds
Add to this the devastating effects that they had on human minds, in particular on teenagers.

When money is good, most people turn a blind eye. Stop the music and people will think twice.

gabaix··on TikTok trend that makes teens believe they have serious mental disorders
What do you mean that you are on mental illness Tik Tok?

Do you work for Tik Tok?

gabaix··on Facebook-owned sites were down
Facebook 2021 revenue is around $100B. That’s $11M an hour. Since it’s peak hour for ad printing, one can assume double or triple this rate.

They are already looking at > $100M in ad loss, not counting reputation damage etc.

gabaix··on Why has the price of electricity in Europe reached record highs?
Building more nuclear helps de-risk wind droughts.

This isn’t specific to nuclear; building more of a different kind mitigates the risk.

gabaix··on Ask HN: Remote Work for Refugees and Asylum Seekers?
I had the same idea.

I have been helping refugees that were coworkers back when I was in Afghanistan. They are all employable and competent in freelance work. Right now they lack the basics (Internet, laptop). I plan to provide them with what they need as soon as their local government (in this case, France) let them work. PM me if you want to share ideas.

gabaix··on Stop Waiting for Godot
I invite you to read it. It is short and quiet absurd. One my favorite plays.

gabaix··on French search firm Qwant seeks €8M Huawei bailout loan
Neither 'diversion of public funds' (I believe you mean embezzlement) nor 'money laundering' would fit the description. This is more akin to 'poor use of public funds', which is also common in the US, and equally frown upon.
gabaix··on Europe's Software Problem
If Europe wants to have its citizens (and companies) rely significantly on European-operated software, it has no choice but to develop better software, and to also offer that for free.

I can’t help thinking of Qwant, the alternative privacy-aware European search engine. Their financial standing is so dire that this week they had to ask money from Huawei. [1]

gabaix··on The lab-leak theory: inside the fight to uncover Covid-19’s origins
Another question is how you can make a virus evolve in the direction you want. 20 years of bat evolution would not necessarily bring a furin cleavage site, so how do you make sure it does?
gabaix··on On Ransomware and Cryptocurrency
This is the tweet that ties the rise of ransomware to crypto anonymity:

1) Receive ETH tied to crime

2) Send to tornado.cash

3) Withdraw from tornado.cash

4) Now you have clean ETH in a fresh wallet not tied to identity

5) Use a DeFi non-KYC exchange to swap for another token

6) Use KYC exchange to swap token for dollars/euros

Can anyone confirm that this method truly anonymize?

If so, what can the US government do to prevent anonymization?

Will it work, meaning it would make extortion significantly harder?

gabaix··on TikTok Remix Culture
I have the opposite impression. I only like niche content about tools and life hacks, but every time seedy content is pushed back into my feed.

It has gotten worse in the past year.

I am actually surprised people see positives about Tik Tok. IMO it has a much worse societal impact than competition.

gabaix··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
Calling it the Anthony Bourdain version resonates so well with me. He was someone I admired and pity at the same time. Looking back you can see the deep sorrow in his documentaries.
gabaix··on Rates of Parkinson’s disease are exploding. A common chemical may be to blame
Little known fact: high concentration of TCE permeates the Bay Area in cites like Palo Alto and Mountain View. The concentration is so bad that these superfund sites are regularly monitored by the federal government.[1]

I lived next to the superfund site of Palo Alto, which was right under Mayfield Soccer Complex. Little had been done to monitor the risks for the children [2]. Reading this article linking TCE to Parkinson's disease, I hope there will be more awareness about Silicon Valley toxic undergrounds.

gabaix··on How to price your SaaS product
Pricing should be easy to understand for your target customer. I am surprised the article does not make mention of it. Startups who focus on value metrics too much may lose sight of it.
gabaix··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
