gaadd33··on Atlassian tells employees they can work from home forever
Where has the "open office" fad ended? It seems like companies say it's a great idea even when presented with evidence to the contrary and they never back down or reverse course
gaadd33··on Rite Aid deployed facial recognition systems in hundreds of U.S. stores
How does having all the customers use the cashier's discount card help the company at all? I've heard the opposite in many stores, where they prohibit the cashier from doing that since it's giving away money (and loyalty points to the cashier) without collecting any data.
gaadd33··on You Crashed a $3M Bugatti. Now What?
Do you feel that way about art too? Most of these cars are more like works of art. Sure as transportation it doesn't give you anything more, just as an original Warhol doesn't give you anything more than a print.
gaadd33··on I got control of my spending with some no-code services and 100 lines of Python
No not at all, not even 2 months rent in my bank account. Maybe try some different banks? My only experiences are with Chase, Marcus and a very small town bank.
gaadd33··on I got control of my spending with some no-code services and 100 lines of Python
What's wrong with doing an ACH transfer for amounts of more than $4,000? Most large banks seem to have limits of $25k/day for those transfers and that can be increased pretty easily (at least on business accounts). There usually aren't any fees for those either.
gaadd33··on Google Is Eating Our Mail
That says you must permit google to send email on your behalf in your SPF record. How is that relevant at all for sending email to Google?
gaadd33··on Paul Vixie thinks more people should be running their own DNS servers
Given so much is (sadly) behind cloudflare or on AWS, I'm not sure that helps them a huge amount without seeing actual packet contents
gaadd33··on PagerDuty S-1
US auto loans have a total of 1.1 trillion outstanding, writing that off wouldn't affect the markets at all or increase the cost of debt?
gaadd33··on FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws
Do you think that Google would intentionally violate their contracts with various huge companies (Broadcom, BBVA, Colgate-Palmolive, etc) gain a little bit more advertising revenue? If nothing else the personal lawsuits for securities fraud against executives would be a huge deterrent.
gaadd33··on FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws
Does Fastmail offer an auto-backup option? Or any other email provider?
gaadd33··on WeWork’s CEO Makes Millions as Landlord to WeWork
How does the law prohibit a profit sharing plan at law firms? It's illegal to pay non lawyers bonuses?
gaadd33··on President Signs Government-Wide Open Data Bill
What matrix library for computer graphics was Amazon working on back in the early 2000s? Genuinely curious since I don't hear much about things like that from Amazon.
gaadd33··on Brave taking cryptocurrency donations “for me” without my consent
Is Mozilla run that lean even with >$500M in revenue?
gaadd33··on Why affordable housing is scarce in progressive cities
Isn't that what the "towers in a park" style of public housing from the 60s and 70s are? From that we've found that it isn't a good solution, eg Cabrini–Green Homes or Robert Taylor Homes

I think people have been looking into these issues for far longer than 1995.

gaadd33··on Build a do-it-yourself home air purifier for about $25
When they link to a product on Amazon they then ask the brand to give them an additional cut of sales? I'm surprised Amazon allows sites to double dip like that.
gaadd33··on Less Turbulence on Delta Flights?
Do you know what airlines use Foreflight?
gaadd33··on Singapore Air Takes Delivery of Jet for World's Longest Flight
One article said that they choose the route based on the prevailing winds. If you look at the route that SQ21 takes compared to SQ22 you can see that EWR-SIN is the route you said but the reverse is over the north Pacific/Canada.
gaadd33··on California governor signs overhaul of bail system
How does the US electronically check my passport when driving into Canada? I can seen Canada doing it on entry and relaying that to the US but otherwise, how does that check get done?
gaadd33··on Passport queues vex airlines
I don't think it's Singapore specifically, seems like all flights incoming to the US always have to pass through some sort of secondary security. For example, MUC->DUS->JFK required additional security when boarding the JFK bound plane (and it was additional even for those entering the airport at DUS).

JFK->SIN though we could get off and didn't have to worry about any security or immigration.

gaadd33··on Google Unveils Titan Security Key, a Yubico-Like Phishing Resistant 2FA Device
What's the source platform for Google Hangouts? I would be interested using them internally for our video chat needs, a link would be useful to see their pricing.
gaadd33··on Elon Musk hires 2 Newfoundland interns who solved problems at Tesla factory
There seem to only be 718500 Aboriginal females in Canada and there are 8.5 million people in NYC and in 2017 there were 334 murders.

So 1 murder per 5000 Aboriginal females in Canada and 1 murder per 25000 people in NYC.

With those numbers it sounds like Canada's police force needs a lot of help in lowering that murder rate.

gaadd33··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers (2015)
Does that Dockerfile build a container that only has that app in and it's required dependencies? Almost all of the ones I've seen given as examples seem to have an entire copy of the OS in.
gaadd33··on Who Strikes Fear into Silicon Valley? Margrethe Vestager
If she isn't in a generally elected role I suppose she hasn't had to gratify or indulge the needs of any voting bloc or compromise her principals to appeal to needed voters. Good for her and my apologies for using a word that triggered such a strong reaction for you.

My point was not to attack her but the entire concept of a political class as described by other commenters. It's likely very different in Europe but having a ruling class is seen as more distasteful when looked at from the viewpoint of the founding principals of the US. E.g the New Hampshire state legislature has a salary of $100/year which would make being nothing but a professional politician rather difficult. I believe one of the other responses better summed up the historical viewpoints.

gaadd33··on The Last Slave Ship Survivor Gave an Interview in the 1930s
Were there a lot of music videos made before MTV? Just curious about the progression of them and how they came to be distributed before there was a cable tv channel.
gaadd33··on Who Strikes Fear into Silicon Valley? Margrethe Vestager
So her whole career is based off of playing different people against each other and pandering to whomever holds the most power?

I don't think it's any better than an American politician but still a far cry from those who felt that politicians should serve their communities for a few years and then go back to an actual career.

gaadd33··on AT&T updates firmware to block access to 1.1.1.1
I like to use 33.0.0.0/8 for that stuff since I don't believe any of those IPs are available on the open internet.
gaadd33··on Want airline food? Take Amtrak
Singapore Airlines has amazing food if you use their book the cook service but even the lobster and steak, while good, is obviously not prepared from scratch in the galley.

Amtrak's food was on par with Applebees, not amazing but still restaurant quality food. I don't think there's any airline that really compares since none have a full kitchen on the plane. E.g. here's amtrak's dining cars: https://www.amtrakvacations.com/content/uploads/2016/01/supe...

gaadd33··on Chinese Companies Are Buying Up Cash-Strapped U.S. Colleges
> given the prestige that Carnegie Hall holds in American culture.

Carnegie Hall wasn't built by the Carnegie Steel Company was it? It seems totally reasonable to separate the aspirations/interests of the owner of a company with the company that he used to make the money.

gaadd33··on SAS is on the brink of something
That doesn't address the question I was asking, of course there are a lot of legacy COBOL systems out there.

Do any of those legacy systems work on "hard problems" similar to how FORTRAN is still used in fluid dynamics, physics, crystallography and chemistry?

gaadd33··on FCC Accuses Stealthy Startup of Launching Rogue Satellites
Couldn't they just open a subsidiary in a country that doesn't have very strict communications regulations?
