gaadd33··on NSA lost access to Mythos amid Anthropic dispute
So the NSA streams the memory contents of every virtual machine and bare metal server on the internet to get the decrypted traffic? How would that even work at the scale of the internet?
gaadd33··on NSA lost access to Mythos amid Anthropic dispute
So the NSA streams the ram of every virtual machine and bare metal server on the internet to themselves so they can analyze the plain text that's being processed in ram and no one has noticed this network traffic? How could that even be possible? If I buy a 100Mbps network connection from someone, they just provision a bit more so that the NSA streaming doesn't impact or show up?
gaadd33··on New York to tax luxury second homes in NYC
How does the interest rate of margin loans generate taxes? Just curious since I'm not sure there's any provision explicitly taxing margin income for banks and brokerages. Especially since some brokers will give you the prime rate plus a few basis points, I can't see how there's enough margin in that to cover an explicit tax on it.
gaadd33··on New York to tax luxury second homes in NYC
So then the rich guy is an NYC resident and pays taxes there, that's a great outcome for the city.
gaadd33··on You can now buy used Ford vehicles on Amazon
Assuming you pay via dealership financing that is likely true but many dealerships have a different price for a car if you are paying cash for it.
gaadd33··on Firefox profiles: Private, focused spaces for all the ways you browse
I think Firefox focus does that on android, I'm sure there's a way to get the same result on a desktop with some flags and pointing to a config file (or a read only profile folder maybe?)

Why is southeast Michigan difficult to drive in? I don't know anything about the area but I would guess if GPS navigation works and it's less dense than SF/LA, most of the major issues are solved?
gaadd33··on American Airlines flying empty Airbus A321neo across the Atlantic 20 times
Jetblue only flies narrow bodies across the Atlantic, I'm sure there are a number of others too.
gaadd33··on Over 80% of sunscreen performed below their labelled efficacy (2020)
A lot of them these days are things like Uvinul A Plus (Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate) and Tinosorb S/P. They essentially act as UV filters similar to physical barriers. Many aren't available in the US, I believe due to FDA regulation of sunscreen but not totally sure why.
gaadd33··on Show HN: TrendFi – I built AI trading signals that self-optimize
If you can reliably generate 200% a year after fees/taxes/etc, you could just get a bunch of credit cards and use broker margin on top of that. It wouldn't surprise me if you could easily start with 200k at that point. Sure the first year would be rough, like grad student living but you would quickly be in the six figures.

gaadd33··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
Empty storefronts in lower Manhattan have become more prevalent especially as Walgreens has been downsizing their Duane Reade locations and banks have reduced branch numbers. Historically I've heard that landlords try to hold out for high rent paying large corporations but in the past few years there are less and less of those tenants. Also I'm sure it's tied to the 10 year lease renewal/rent increase cycle.

Anecdotally, I notice a lot more foot traffic in Fidi than last year and far less traffic when I do need to take a taxi or uber. It seems like greater foot traffic would be a benefit for your friend's store unless it's a destination store that sells large products (furniture/appliances/etc).

gaadd33··on r/Duolingo Will No Longer Be Duolingo’s Unpaid Customer Support or Data Mine
What customer support is legally required? Just curious since I've had better experience with Google/etc related support than I have with things like most consumer electronics or appliance manufacturers.
gaadd33··on When a winter storm trapped a luxury passenger train near Donner Pass
Although under the law that created Amtrak, the track owners are supposed to give priority to passenger trains. I don't think that's been enforced for 30+ years (maybe ever) so freight is prioritized since it makes the owners more money.
gaadd33··on When a winter storm trapped a luxury passenger train near Donner Pass
Is that true at 7k ft on a train line that only has 1 train on it? I can understand next to a busy freight line or something like that but it seems like freshly blown snow (to the volume that it stops a train) wouldn't have much in it. I can't say I know the purity of snow at that altitude though.
