g00gler··on $7.5B In Stolen Bitcoin from 2016 Bitfinex Hack has just been moved
Wouldn’t they have some trouble getting it into an exchange to change it to XMR?

I assume that even if they moved some portion of it, say 10 BTC, to N different wallets, those transactions would be traceable to the exchange?

I’m not sure how XMR works but then the exchange would know at least which wallet the XMR was sent to.

I’m also not sure of the law surrounding a P2P transfer (IE receiving stolen property) but I’m guessing you might be SOL if you did a trade with them on a P2P platform as well...

Very interested if someone in the know would like to chime in

g00gler··on Penny Stocks Are Booming, Which Is Good News for Swindlers
It’s relatively easy to pay less taxes than your true compensation once you get past the rank-and-file level of employment.

As income taxes rise there’s a clear pattern of altered compensation like stock grants, expense accounts, etc.

For example, a company can lease an apartment for you to live in. That expense is a write off and isn’t subject to FICA taxes.

Instead of giving you $40,000 in cash which would cost 30% in FICA between you and the company plus personal income tax to you, you can live in a nice $3500/mo apartment you would otherwise be paying for in after tax dollars.

Instead of you paying $800/month+ for a Tesla model X lease with your after tax dollars the company can pay for it, write it off, and again they’re saving 15% on taxes and you’re saving > 40% on that $10,000 and pocketing more of your after tax income.

g00gler··on Show HN: CryptoTask – a 0% fee freelance platform powered by blockchain
I’m interested in hearing about this too.
g00gler··on Hackers break into thousands of security cameras, exposing Tesla, jail, hospital
D-Link sells cameras that don’t have cloud access. Look up a DCS-913L. I bought one on eBay around a year ago. It has wifi and you can set it up to record over SMB.

It’s not the best image quality but if you get another router, a raspberry pi and a large external HDD you can have a relatively cheap CCTV set up.

g00gler··on The Uyghur Genocide: An examination of breaches of the 1948 Genocide Convention
Very interesting. I had heard about people being stabbed at a bus stop back in 2014 but I hadn’t heard of many of these incidents.

Thanks for posting!

It seems like concerns about radical Islam are mounting in both the east and west (see Swedish burka ban, new French laws about stopping radicalization).

I wonder what avenues of unilateral action can be taken by China, the EU and US.

g00gler··on The Uyghur Genocide: An examination of breaches of the 1948 Genocide Convention
Can you provide some sources for terrorist attacks perpetrated by Uighers?
g00gler··on U.S. life expectancy falls by a full year
Source?
g00gler··on 'Sexual favours were the norm in music industry'
I don't think OP was in the entertainment industry. He has worked with several large companies at a very senior level and has never experienced anything like what is alleged to occur in the entertainment industry.
g00gler··on Slack is down
Why are they in camps along the border? Why are the Uighur? Did the "brown people" break any laws? Did the Uighurs?

Are the "brown people" in camps along the border a single, ethnic minority? Are all "brown people" in the country subject to arrest and under surveillance just for being "brown"?

g00gler··on Should I Buy a House?
> Most people don't consider all costs associated with buying a house which include closing costs (when you sell as well, renting has no such costs), property tax, maintenance, insurance, HOA, etc...

100%. I was in escrow on what would have been my first home purchase. The amount of money that goes into just buying a house was insane.

After the sale fell through I ran the numbers for my parents home and much like the article says over the last 25 years or so they made next to nothing or maybe even lost money after interest, taxes, upkeep, etc even though the cash value went up over 30%

g00gler··on Should I Buy a House?
Taxes for one. Everything you do for the home is a write-off assuming you have other income rather than an out and out loss. Water heater? WRITE OFF! New roof? WRITE OFF!
g00gler··on CAPTCHAs don’t prove you’re human – they prove you’re American (2017)
I don’t think anyone knows exactly what they’re looking 100% the time.

I have to redo captchas all the time so don’t feel bad!

g00gler··on Microsoft 365 has employee surveillance and analytics built in
I installed an app called cliclick https://www.bluem.net/en/projects/cliclick/

Then I wrote a script to move the mouse randomly across the screen.

I'd post the script but I did a clean install. It wasn't very in-depth, though.

  1. Write an endless loop

    2. Generate 2 random numbers

    3. call cliclick to move the mouse to those coordinates
g00gler··on My experience as a poll worker in Pennsylvania
In Pennsylvania there was a web tool via the department of state to check if your mail in ballot was counted.

I can picture several ways to do a hybrid (mail + online) election like getting a code in the mail, voting online, then being able to ensure your ballot was counted correctly by using your code.

It seems to make a lot more sense than having states count for a week.

g00gler··on I now have an Oculus paperweight
> You shouldn't be getting banned from VR gaming due (including offline single-player games) due to a completely unrelated drunken political rant on social media.

Have you stopped to consider that might very well be the goal? It’s like an abusive relationship.

Act out, make our jobs hard & that stupid camera you call your parents on is toast!

Act out & your VR headset is toast!

Act out & I won’t let you talk to your family and friends on WhatsApp!

g00gler··on I now have an Oculus paperweight
I have an oculus quest purchased over the summer.

I was able to sign up for oculus, not Facebook.

I got emails about a change in account stuff & I was able to keep my oculus account and not sign up for Facebook.

Can new customers only sign in through Facebook???? Seems like a very bad idea...

g00gler··on Ask HN: How do custom software dev firms make money?
That’s really interesting. I’m coming at this from 2 angles —- I run a small “shop”, me and 1 or 2 other guys part time; I also work for a company who has contracted an agency for creating a design system for us.

Do you estimate there will be X hours of bug fixing and add that to the price of billable hours?

How do you take into account client requests after a billing period is complete or during a billing period?

IME US agencies wind up billing over $100/hr/dev then still charge for bug fixes.

I’ve learned over the years that I cannot give a per project price and it has to be hourly as requirements shift often or certain tasks run over

g00gler··on Ask HN: Working part-time in tech?
I've sent you an email re:part time work :)
g00gler··on The Great Toilet Paper Scare of 1973 (2014)
You're 100% right. My toilet paper usage is 1-2 squares per trip.

I'm something of a bidet evangelist, even in non-invisible-war times. A coworker mentioned the other day that bidets had long shipping delays.

I just looked on Amazon. There are no prime options, some are out of stock + the model I have is priced at least 2-2.5x higher than when I bought it a year or so ago.

The run on bidets must have started around the same time as the run on TP.

g00gler··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
It drives me crazy that they sell CBD at gas stations. It’s not the same as the products I buy at the dispensary and is snake oil.

However, my medical cannabis packages don’t give that kind of dosage information.

I don’t have a high CBD product on hand but it typically says something like “1 dose is a [3|5] second inhalation” or 1mL of a tincture. The whole package typically includes less than 600mg CBD.

Are these studies for shrinking tumor growth? Could you provide links?

As an aside, I met some guys from a company in Colorado that sells pounds of high CBD flower by mail for around $130... can’t imagine that making RSO from their hemp would be hundreds of dollars a week.

g00gler··on Eat This Much – Automatic Meal Planner
My only complaint is if I pick “2 meals” it shows breakfast and lunch rather than lunch and dinner and I can’t get it to flip.

Anyone know how to fix that?

Edit: even if I pick 3 meals, it comes up with a snack. I just want breakfast and dinner, is that bad?

g00gler··on Airbnb Suffers Big Defeat in Jersey City
Yes very nice place. You could say it’s lost some of its charm or that its greatly improved.

Originally from there and would love to go back but it’s prohibitively expensive, even for software developers!

g00gler··on Airbnb Suffers Big Defeat in Jersey City
Staying in jersey city is a great alternative to NYC/Hoboken. Uber through the tunnel or to the ferry and you’re in Manhattan very quickly.

I had an obligation in Hoboken a couple years back and stayed in a spare bedroom in jersey city for (I believe) $38/night.

g00gler··on Tech Workers Backing Candidates Looking to Break Up Their Employers
More companies, more jobs, more competition.

For example, other ad networks can buy ad placement in google search.

g00gler··on Tech Workers Backing Candidates Looking to Break Up Their Employers
You can also say the search engine and operating system drive the ad network.

Google the search engine could charge an ad network a lot for the right to show sponsored results and provide analytics.

Android/Chrome could charge a lot for user data, analytics, have their own mobile ad network and app store. Android could also start charging a licensing fee to vendors

Etc etc

g00gler··on Amazon Should Acquire the US Postal Service
Is the post office really beloved? Remember when Kramer wanted to stop getting mail...
g00gler··on Artificial intelligence is being used to predict gambler behaviour
The media does a terrible job of describing AI/ML.

My roommate was under the impression that Facebook shut down their experiment wherein chatbots communicated with each other because they were scared of the consequences of the machines communicating in their own language.

For the unaware, Facebook determined it wasn’t useful to continue the exercise.

g00gler··on Avocados are wreaking havoc in Mexico
From the article, expanding avocado farms is leading to drought and deforestation. Increased use of pesticides is making the pickers sick and poisoning the ground water
g00gler··on Ask HN: Do You Consider Remote a Working Perk?
I think remote work is a benefit when you’re sitting in a cubicle farm 8 hours a day, some days of the week. I’m much, much happier when working from home and can focus much better when it’s required. Definitely not a “taxable benefit”, though, in the sense that you get a decreased salary in exchange for it.

You bring up very good points about working 100% remote, though. It should not constitute a decreased salary unless you’re not working full time remote.

If I were you I’d try to negotiate for the employer to pay for gigabit internet and buy you a nice new PC, then just take those things off the total compensation. Nice thing being that those things are now pretty much tax-free income for you. You’ll be saving on commuting costs, too. Also calculate what you can write off for a home office.
