fyloraspit··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
Perhaps a news source with ties to Israel then?
fyloraspit··on Real vs. fake AirPods with industrial CT
Great longevity as they tend to be for club / dj environments but I find they have way too much pressure on the ear to be comfortable as regular headphones for use at a computer.
fyloraspit··on Cities Skylines 2 runs with 20fps on an Nvidia RTX4090
Severe CPU bottleneck normally implies that your CPU may need to be upgraded though? If you are running a 13900k, there isn't much room for that.
fyloraspit··on Cities Skylines 2 runs with 20fps on an Nvidia RTX4090
Same question then, if it is CPU bound on a 13900k
fyloraspit··on Australia fines X for not answering questions on child abuse content
That don't want it? I don't think that qualifier was required.
fyloraspit··on Intel's Latest I9 Chip Has Speeds Up to 6GHz
I have a 13900k and can confirm, its basically an air fryer.
fyloraspit··on The midwit home
What a time to be alive
fyloraspit··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
I'll probably just stick with my 5.
fyloraspit··on Lead poisoning causes more death, IQ loss than thought: study
Perhaps significant enough vaper from plumbing solder made it into AC unit or some other building or trade technique which involves some lead
fyloraspit··on Snowden leak: Cavium networking hardware may contain NSA backdoor
Yeh but it is still closed source, no? I guess if it is air gapped that could be fine, but we are talking mid level network gear here, so for 99% of its use, it isn't air gapped. It is enabling broader connectivity. So you would have to trust the closed source software at some point.
fyloraspit··on Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
Sometimes you want mouse or dynamic menu in frame for highlighting. Most likely reason for print screen + paint IMO.
fyloraspit··on Doing laundry on campus without a phone
Enshittification
fyloraspit··on Long Live the 'GPU Poor' – Open-Source AI Grants
Yeh I built a dual 3090 machine and just to have those 2 cards run well cost a lot for all the other stuff. Workstation spec mobo, top tier PSU, CPU and memory with headroom for the system, not to mention storage and case and cooling. And this is just a hobbyist build. Cost would have easily doubled if I actually got server grade CPU and memory etc.
fyloraspit··on We need scientific dissidents
You do think it was ended with vaccines?
fyloraspit··on We need scientific dissidents
Who's were?
fyloraspit··on Ask HN: Why does Apple refuse to add window snapping to macOS?
I think bettertouchtools is the best to get macos to the point of usability with regard to window management and other general OS QoL.

Linux really does beat out everything for this type of stuff imo. The best window management, sometimes even by default and everything customisable almost to the point of perfection.

fyloraspit··on Consciousness and Anaesthesia (2009)
Ok, Tyler Durden.
fyloraspit··on Consciousness and Anaesthesia (2009)
I've read about something similar called split brain where there can be separate consciousness in the brain and maybe elsewhere. Interesting experiments have been done on it and it just all seems so weird. Very tricky figuring out this consciousness thing from the inside.
fyloraspit··on Serotonin booster leads to increased functional brain connectivity
I've had both feelings from MDMA. Urgent need for #2 on come up. Complete inability to perform #1 even though busting at peak. Maybe it's a serotonin thing
fyloraspit··on Private Equity Is Now Dominating the US Hospice System
If we are being real, isn't the banker probably from Europe though?
fyloraspit··on Aurora Store Accounts Blocked by Google
Welp.. lucky I updated a couple of days ago.
fyloraspit··on Aurora Store Accounts Blocked by Google
You might be waiting a while. If you read the documentation I think they get into to the reasons for that pretty thoroughly. As a side note, I think the prices for 5's and 6's is pretty reasonable right now (they seem to have fallen a bit from a year or 2 ago).
fyloraspit··on Windows XP Activation: Game Over
I played the shit outta that demo oh the nostalgia
fyloraspit··on Andy Rourke: The Smiths bassist dies aged 59
If the modern western world needs more of something, it's definitely euphemism
fyloraspit··on Can America Go Car-Free? Gen Z Hopes So
But don't their taxes and other associated costs (road, vehicle registration, fuel, etc.) pay that?

Do you know what else is expensive? Travelling long distances and crossing bodies of water with more cargo than can reasonably be carried, without a vehicle and somewhere to drive it.

fyloraspit··on Spacetop, a radical laptop with no screen
At a point some time ago, I think around when Windows mobile OS was still a thing, they released a phone and a dock and you could use it as a desktop for modern apps. It was limited to apps due to architecture but that always seemed like the next step to me for many people. A mobile you could just use as a PC via a dock and run desktop apps on it. I think we will still see it, but it really felt like Microsoft was going to deliver years ago on it.
fyloraspit··on Crooks’ mistaken bet on encrypted phones
A bunch of prominent independently produced and maintained 'secure' communications networks marketed to black markets were intercepted by global law enforcement networks, shutdown, and many criminal cases were made off the back of those takedown operations.
fyloraspit··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
They are worse together. Achieving some fine balance of corporations may seem somewhat utopian but we are pretty far from utopia in the current day.

Building a mega corporation without big government/s I would argue is basically impossible. And local level governance is more likely and potent without big government. Again though, all of that is quite hard to achieve / see how to achieve when people with existing power enjoy the status quo control more of the levers than the masses, including the ones used to influence the masses.

fyloraspit··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
Would it not be just as annoying to see a slant the other direction, or in any extreme direction?
fyloraspit··on Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default
Flatpaks are better than snaps IMO, but both are only good for certain apps due to the largely half baked implementations.
