fxleach··on Google Pixel Buds
There were many wireless earbuds around the time Apple came out with the AirPods so you're really not selling your point here. Just because a company wants to get into that market now doesn't automatically make it derivative from Apple. The Dash was very popular, people have heard about it. Samsung Gear IconX earbuds were also popular and out before AirPods. Should we say that Apple is derivative of Samsung because they came to the market first? By your logic, yes we should.
fxleach··on Google Pixel Buds
Don't forget about Samsung's Gear IconX earbuds, they came out before Apple as well.
fxleach··on Google Pixel Buds
How are they a copy of the AirPods? The AirPods, to me, look hideous. You take the original Apple headphones and cut off the wire. But putting that aside I'm finding it hard to see how these headphones resemble anything like AirPods. I mean, they're wireless headphones...? Is that the issue?
fxleach··on How Much Toilet Paper? – The Coronavirus Toilet Paper Calculator
Then stop using ten squares to wipe your butt and restock slightly sooner than usual. Still no excuse to buy excessively more than you usually do.
fxleach··on How Much Toilet Paper? – The Coronavirus Toilet Paper Calculator
You know how much toilet paper you need? As much as you normally get.
fxleach··on “We found PayPal vulnerabilities and PayPal punished us for it”
My experience with PayPal, from dev support to account managers, has been an absolute shit show. They were simply the first to their market and it's hard to kick them out.
fxleach··on All about Birds
Not a journaling/checklist kind of app but if you need help identifying a bird and can snap a picture of it there is an app called iNaturalist. It has a really good ID system, and if it can't give you any suggestions other people using the app will be able to suggest an ID. It's also not limited to birds.
fxleach··on Lumen – Elixir and Erlang in the Browser
Yup. I've used Lumen a couple times over the past few years. Not sure why you would start a new project with that name, it's already well known and easily searchable.
fxleach··on Please make your products work with URLs
That's not irony
fxleach··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
Agreed, just funny how the commenter says they're blasting away money for years in one sentence but then seems to try and justify the price increase in the next.
fxleach··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
"...years of blasting away money in favor of growth-at-all-costs" - Maybe those companies should go under?
fxleach··on Announcing Updated Postman Plans and Pricing
No one is complaining that Postman isn't free for business. Take another look at the article. In summation: "So, for more money, you get fewer users, API calls, documentation views, custom domains, and integrations."
fxleach··on Engineer says Google fired her for notifying co-workers of right to organize
I think the punishment is warranted for the fact that it is an internal security tool. I don't know of any large company that would allow this kind of code commit without that level of punishment being taken. She was trying to be sincere in her actions but comes off as completely naive that what she was doing was a serious violation. I don't see her winning this to any degree and at 21 it will be a big learning lesson.
fxleach··on “We would like to apologize to the user for the error on our part this morning”
Well it did happen yesterday so...
fxleach··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
I got to the 3rd "the world’s best pro notebook" before I even finished the first sentence and gave up.
fxleach··on Engineering is not about programming, but problem solving
The final section gets around to explaining the problem solving part mentioned in the title.

I enjoyed this sentence and will use it often: "You sound extremely junior by attacking PHP every second chance."

fxleach··on Ask HN: What is the most beautiful piece of code you've ever read?
The most beautiful piece of code you've ever read contains a magic number with the comments "evil floating point bit level hacking" and "what the fuck?"... you're a madman.
fxleach··on Who Killed the Scrollbar?
After the 5th "flipping" I stopped flipping reading the post.
fxleach··on UK phone number transfers between networks are handled through a Yahoo Group
I like the tone of this paper:

"A review might consider whether it is befitting for the world's sixth largest economy to manage critical national infrastructure via a Yahoo group but we would hope that is obvious."

fxleach··on ICE has kept British family with their 3-month-old baby detained for days
Stop pushing this story with this ridiculously click-baited title. More like "ICE detains family crossing border illegally with $16k in cash, previously denied entry".
fxleach··on Modern C, Second Edition
I guess no pre-ordering, the link is broken: https://www.manning.com/books/modern-c
fxleach··on Is This Legal?
I live in Ontario and I'm curious as to why you think this is unlikely to be considered age discrimination here.
fxleach··on [dead]
This is just one long advertising pitch.
fxleach··on I feel like im talking to the borg
Thank you. Just a very horrid conversation from both sides.
fxleach··on How I got my username on nearly every site
It's strange that you link to these articles to somehow justify the shitty thing you did, and they're straight out saying that you should _not_ be doing what you're doing.

The first paragraph of your post... "I quite often sign up to things just to snag the name."

GitHub: "GitHub account name squatting is prohibited."

Telegram: "we reserve the right to recall usernames assigned to unused bots and channels, as well as openly squatted usernames"

NPM: "Don't squat on package names, user names or organization names."

Dick move.

fxleach··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
How is it "literally the only way to counter scamming sellers"? There are so many competitors out there that offer better services... Stripe, Google Pay, Moneris, Braintree, Square, WePay, Authorize.net, the list goes on...
fxleach··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
Completely expected. As a developer that has been forced to integrate with PayPal numerous times I'm not surprised the customer service side is as abysmal as the developer side. Terrible service, run-arounds, just shitting all over the bed in general. Don't even get me started on their fraud resolution.

They are simply the biggest name in the business and have been around the longest. There is absolutely no other reason they deserve the market share they have.

fxleach··on Berlin approves 5-year rent freeze
I agree with some of your points but I think you're misguided on a couple.

>because people won’t move if their rent stays “affordable,”

This is the issue rent control is trying to solve. There will always be rich people that can afford to live in the city, and they basically raise the bar on what developers and landlords think people can afford. They stay comfy while the rest basically pour all their paycheck into rent, forgo savings, and feel stuck. What about the rest of the people that work in the city with median income (or lower) jobs? They get pushed out further and further from city centres. In turn, that creates enormous strain on public transit and traffic congestion becomes unbearable.

That being said I don't believe rent control is the proper solution, but it's the only one most people agree on right now. I'd like to hear about more solutions if there are any.

fxleach··on Why aren’t more companies remote-first?
Remote-first is a relatively new idea, that's why. Sure, there are a lot of companies that offer remote days on the schedule, and some international companies that hire certain branches of the business as remote, but the concept of a remote-first company is new and will take time to adopt.

Came here to say that as well.
