fxfan··on Both Windows 10 and Chrome OS are embracing the Linux kernel
runaway success of oss Linux on the desktop? I'm a full time user but I can't tell you how much I hate he constant hardware issues. it's 2019 and I cannot hibernate or sleep my laptop reliably. the backlight doesn't work without fiddling with kernel Params.
fxfan··on Go makes it easier to write correct, clear and efficient code
When does CoreRT ship?
fxfan··on GitHub Is Down?
fossil from the creator of SQLite
fxfan··on Microsoft is going to ship a full Linux kernel in Windows 10
Reminds me of the time there was a comment wondering what the OS on Microsoft watch was- someone responded with a speculation - an erlang vm with js for gui
fxfan··on TeX Live 2019
I hit the comment limit earlier but thank you for writing in detail about what's actually going on behind the scenes so I can take care to not let the problem affect me much.

That said, and despite your yourself having mentioned that there is no excuse for the shortcomings, I feel like this decision in particular is just plain inexcusable anyway because if you're going to write portable document, at least use some form of UTF encoding rather than indexing into glyphs (or on top of !)

fxfan··on Nearly all 2020 presidential candidates aren’t using a basic email security
Some of use bernie supporters were also called comrade and bernie was maligned for having had his honeymoon in Soviet. I hate Trump based on what i've seen him say first hand but of late I'm beginning to form an opinion that media blows things completely out of proportion and Russia Collusion is Iraq 2.0
fxfan··on Vodafone Found Hidden Backdoors in Huawei Equipment
Forcing upon users is wrong but calling it backdoor, as someone who sounds reasonably intelligent to other reasonably intelligent people is misleading and wrong too.
fxfan··on Vodafone Found Hidden Backdoors in Huawei Equipment
You haven't worked for large companies have you? Intel ME is NOT a backdoor. It may have vulnerabilities, sure. But none explicitly put in there.

It was designed for a specific purpose- troubleshooting enterprise computers. And it does that job amazingly well. No more IT guy guiding me when he can just do all the clicks himself.

fxfan··on Vodafone Found Hidden Backdoors in Huawei Equipment
If one mistake tarnished reputation forever then after Iraq war none of CNN, Fox, NYT, MSNBC, WaPo should be in business, specially since all of these were accomplices in and not victims of falsehoods.
fxfan··on SpaceX Gets FCC Approval to Sell Wireless High-Speed Home Internet from Space
I don't know about the LEO numbers but quick back of the envelop calculation assuming 1000 km means this latency would be nearly 3 ms.
fxfan··on TeX Live 2019
This is super cool, thank you for sharing!
fxfan··on TeX Live 2019
XeTeX in particular does but my problem is with the uncertainty around the whole process and the frustration when a search fails on a 300 page document
fxfan··on TeX Live 2019
EDIT: Release notes: https://tug.org/texlive/doc/texlive-en/texlive-en.html#

One technology that has stood the test of time- amazingly well designed TeX by Donald Knuth and LaTeX by Leslie Lamport.

Plain TeX can be a bit beginner unfriendly because most beginners use LaTeX and experienced people have their own 'coding style' but it's amazingly powerful.

I only wish somebody would add the minimum required primitives to plain TeX to render reflowable text in browsers and ebook readers

TeX was designed for "beautiful" typesetting but it gives you much more control than that IMHO. I'd urge everyone to try it out once, I use it offline but I think overleaf.com allows for plain TeX too. (XeTeX may work best for unicode, it's plain tex + minimal additions for Unicode)

On that note- I am not fond of PDFs because of their awfully poor unicode search support- does anybody knowledgeable know of a good target format I should use (and the appropriate drivers?)

fxfan··on Giving up on wlroots-rs
That's not how OSS contributions work. C# is wildly popular in enterprise, and most of New york runs on F#. How often do you see .NET repos on Github?
fxfan··on Tell HN: Hours left to protest ICANN's plan to uncap prices of legacy TLDs
I never thought I'd oppose he decision of transferring ICANN control to outside of USA- it seemed increasingly and inevitably for the greater good. now I'm no longer so sure why it was done.
fxfan··on Go 1.13: xerrors
I've heard great points and experienced myself how utterly legible go is. But nobody on earth has ever praised anything about the language design itself. I wonder if go came from somewhere not google- how would it fare.
fxfan··on Giving up on wlroots-rs
I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet- a rust rewrite means you are more likely to invite contributions from a larger community.
fxfan··on Apache Software Foundation joins GitHub open source community
And the 3 dozen GitHub to Gitlab migrants are trying to find ways to come back while still saving face.

I have personally seen people who, for example, not only use powershell (on Linux of all places) but also build tooling around it and file issues on the GitHub repo. The same people left GitHub when MS acquired it.

fxfan··on Show HN: Lorem Picsum – Lorem Ipsum but for photos
a Loren ipsum I will actually use. now if only plain tex would include this as a package
fxfan··on Microsoft Is Winning the Techlash
where is my jump list from task bar! "omg m$ sucks"
fxfan··on The Mueller Report, Searchable and Accessible on the Archive
Not really. I'm a progressive and we're trying to have a balanced discussion under the other comment of mine.
fxfan··on China Exploits Fleet of U.S. Satellites
That doesn't work.

India relied on GPS and Clinton turned off (regrettably IMHO) India's access to high precision data in the 2000 Indo-Pak war.

India went on to build their own.

EDIT: Year was probably 1999, not sure.

fxfan··on The Mueller Report, Searchable and Accessible on the Archive
At this point the whole thing feels like Iraq 2.0 and I wonder if I'm getting suckered by media.

What only worries me as a progressively-disenchanted but firmly and forever a supporter of Bernie Sanders is that even sanders seems to have been wrong on this one unlike Iraq, which I would shout from rooftops that he was the only politician right about. I would (and still do) quote his 'What are you afraid of' video to all who would listen...

The question is just why?

Do traders track RAM firms using electron-primary-app-firms? Or use one to hedge against the other ;). Perhaps add Intel too in the mix somewhere!
fxfan··on Show HN: Sauron – A web framework in Rust that adheres to the Elm architecture
I'm still waiting for something like scala.js for Rust. I don't like the thought of using two different programming languages and currently it seems scala.js is the most dependable front-end library
fxfan··on Show HN: Sauron – A web framework in Rust that adheres to the Elm architecture
There was a time when people named stuff after positive things. If you asked my psychologist ex about people who name things after Saurons and Cockroaches, she'll jump to some 'priliminary conclusions'. This country needs frequent mental checkups like we have frequent dental checkups

Microsoft is closing fast on AWS. This is going to be an XBox vs PS again except with no japanese loyalty to help the PS.
