fxfan··on We moved our servers to Iceland
Are these all your employer's servers? Or is there a service you utilized?
fxfan··on V Playground
You talk too much with a lot of confidence without knowing quite enough. You also claim Rust isn't free of race conditions when the Rust type system (claims) that it is. (using Sync types).

Please stop commenting in negative way specially since you're not very knowledgeable.

It's his website, he can do whatever he wants. You are not a paying customer. Stop being a choosing beggar.
fxfan··on V Playground
Please don't lecture people unless you have something to show for it yourself, specially if it is unsolicited. The author is giving away his work for free, he owes nobody anything. He is amazingly humble too. You don't like his claims you are free to not use his product (for free!)

Can you, github.com/jwilm, github.com/kovidgoyal et al get together and instead give us a better standard that all 3 of you implement? I am sorry but I won't use your terminal just for one feature, I can use a dedicated image viewer.
fxfan··on Apple Violated Qualcomm Patent, U.S. Trade Judge Rules
Wow you're shamelessly stretching the definition. He particularly worked on a study commissioned by Microsoft. That does not make him a paid shill
fxfan··on Apple Violated Qualcomm Patent, U.S. Trade Judge Rules
There is no source on 'paid by microsoft'. The article you linked just links another (dead) article. Please quote original sources, not 'he said she said'
fxfan··on Rust is not a good C replacement
If OP thinks Firefox is one of the largest C++ codebases in the world then OP has a very limited worldview.
fxfan··on KaTeX – Fast math typesetting library for the web
This is cool. I just hope he ultimately has a pathway from HINT to epub so that this gains universal use, like how regular TeX sees because it can be made into a pdf
fxfan··on KaTeX – Fast math typesetting library for the web
Side:

I would love to see a Macro system on top of TeX which has non-fixed-width page as it's base. And generate dvi's that I can convert to epub.

It won't directly be on top of TeX because TeX itself assumes fixed width but except for the width related directives, all directives would be shared with TeX. Basically everything would be such that existing TeX documents can be converted with little work.

fxfan··on Rogue Airbnb listings still exist where short-term rentals aren't allowed
Can some people enumerate pros and cons of hotels vs airbnb?

I've always stayed at hiltons- granted my firm pays for it. Besides kitchen, I've never felt anything missing.

It's mentioned in the article before the ATGC paragraph
fxfan··on Ask HN: Start a charity-driven staffing firm?
Crazy in a good way. I don't think you need to talk about your earnings distribution with either party.

Please remember to keep your hiring process human too and inculcate a culture among seekers where job attributes thus relevant are paid attention to.

As someone who worked in the wall-street in a quant role it can be a mad rush to nowhere and easy to get lost. So if you succeed, you'd be helping a whole lot of people.

Remember though- businesses take time to setup. The more you deviate from the normal the longer it may take you to get established.

You truly sound like a bender. Is there a quick start to iptables somewhere? Is iptables the defacto network tool?

And can one prevent ddos using iptables?

fxfan··on Microsoft Defender Comes to the Mac
Do you have a source for that?
fxfan··on Microsoft Defender Comes to the Mac
There is a clear privacy policy. Not sure what you're talking about. Microsoft is always at front fighting government.
fxfan··on Microsoft Defender Comes to the Mac
Because opt out telemtery makes no sense. I am a power user- I use start menu jumplists in windows 7. I disable telemetry.

Microsoft: Umm- looks like nobody used jumplists in start menu. Lets remove in windows 8+

Everybody: Windows is getting worse for power users.

I myself use Arch as my default OS with dmenu and rofi to help me.

fxfan··on How to take back control of /etc/resolv.conf on Linux (2018)
One of my pain points with Linux is that every newly installed software thinks its okay to add new fonts that "provide" for traditional ones like Arial. I hope I will find a way to change that in nix but I'm wondering if I go change that in /etc/ and repeat for all machines or I can somehow do it in nix conf
fxfan··on How to take back control of /etc/resolv.conf on Linux (2018)
I hear a lot of chatter about nix. What do you use it for and how is it working out for you?
fxfan··on A ‘Disgusting’ Yale Professor Moves On
Not to mention often just parroting things they've been told by the "teacher" who may or may not have had a fully independent thought process himself. I mean if I were a professor who wants to save his job, I for one would definitely approve of "ban on culturally insensitive clothing"

Except the privacy policy clearly states what Microsoft users this data for. You can go around flailing your hands in constant paranoia or you can actually give an evidence of wrongdoing and sue the shit out of them.

But why wait for evidence when posting "Micro$oft is evil" is more fun?

fxfan··on Azure Data Studio: An Open-Source GUI Editor for Postgres
God forbid they learn which features people use more and maybe improve them?

Surely you don't use gmail or any other webmail or a web service?
