fwdslash··on Books I've read in the third quarter of 2017
Yeah that's what I thought. Well, thanks for the idea! :)

Off topic, but how'd you get HTTPS working for GitHub pages?
fwdslash··on Why Everyone Missed the Most Mind-Blowing Feature of Cryptocurrency
Although I agree, I think the point people are trying to make when they say that is this:

Cryptocurrency breaks down financial barriers usually erected because of geo-political relationships. Other sectors might benefit from the same kind of egalitarianism.

I don't know what the future holds, but there could be interesting applications, but probably not as world changing as people think.

I really dislike articles that start off like this one, where every sentence has to be on a new line. Why write this way?
fwdslash··on China Bans Bitcoin Executives from Leaving Country, Miners “Preparing for Worst”
True but it hasn't crashed yet.
fwdslash··on China orders Bitcoin exchanges in capital city to close
> but BTC requires huge warehouses full of computers to mine

Currently. It wasn't always that way, and there are many other currencies (Monero) where that isn't the case.

I completely agree with this. For years, I was a crypto-currency advocate, telling any and all that it's better than their credit and debit cards. When I took a look at why, though, I realized that tool (in physical form) already exists: cash. As long as you trade a few with a few friends, or buy something from a Mom & Pop, no one can really know what bills you have, and there's no record, ever.

What are you talking about? Also every exchange out there will let you short any number of cryptocurrencies.
fwdslash··on Ask HN: Why is Bitcoin suddenly so popular?
There pretty much is no way for you or I (a.k.a: people without mass surveillance) to get # of users accurately. The best metrics we can go off of are # of transactions[1] and # of unique addresses[2].

fwdslash··on Ask HN: Why is Bitcoin suddenly so popular?
Mainly because of fees. I'd say crypto (as a whole) has had a huge increase in acceptance overall, and with Bitcoin being the easiest to purchase and usually the favored currency to trade alts with, it's natural that it's only grown in popularity.
fwdslash··on My wonderful world of macOS
The best line:

> The same hacker who previously sold data dumps from MySpace, Tumblr, LinkedIn, and Fling.com, is now selling more than 100 Million VK.com records for just 1 Bitcoin (approx. US$580).

Ah, those were the days, when bitcoin was worth <$1,000.

fwdslash··on Ask HN: Why is Bitcoin suddenly so popular?
It's the network affect. More people using it, the price rises, more people buy, the price rises more, and on and on.
fwdslash··on Most men in the US and Europe could be infertile by 2060
More low-level radiation access? (smartphones/computers/smartwatches)

More refined sugar?

Less physical activity?

I really wonder what it could be, though.

fwdslash··on Should California spend $3B to help people buy electric cars?
> It’s yet to be determined where the bill’s $3 billion will come from.

This is the current major problem in California from healthcare to public transport: where is the money going to come from?

Are you referring to the Mayweather v. McGregor fight? If so, not really, but kinda disappointed the underdog didn't win. Would've made for an amazing story.
