fuzzzerd··on I don't like traveling anymore
While that is definitely true, you can ignore it and choose local options. I often try to ask locals where they go to eat. Most people are excited to share a recommendation or two and why they like it.

Another thing I do, is avoid online menues at least ahead of visiting a spot and make my selections once I arrive. I can't say it's better, but it definitely keeps the serendipitous and suspense that I remember from my younger years before everything was online and had a million reviews.

fuzzzerd··on France rejects backdoor mandate
That seems a plausible outcome. Pretty dystopian for sure, but plausible.

Sadly the cat is out of the bag, so banning it for the general public means that only the bad guys have it and they're already presumably doing illegal things so why do they care about using illegal software too?

fuzzzerd··on Half-Life
I ran a server that was primarily rat surf maps with a Warcraft/RPG server mod for years back then. It was super fun and something that modern games just can't touch in terms of that kind of niche.
fuzzzerd··on Firing programmers for AI is a mistake
Probably my cynicism but its the more stores you drive past the more likely you are to stop off and buy something.
fuzzzerd··on Show HN: HN as TikTok, welcome to HN hell
I also struggle with frontend, can you share any more about how you did this? All local? From a service? My usage so Fae is limited to copilot, but I'd like to try other things.
fuzzzerd··on Microsoft won't support Office apps on Windows 10 after October 14th
Mature? Yes. Better than Gdocs, debatable, but IMO yes. Replacement for the desktop app? Not quite, but it depends on which feature you specifically need.
fuzzzerd··on Spying on Student Devices, Schools Aim to Intercept Self-Harm Before It Happens
How do you MITM their own devices? Do you require installing root certs to access WiFi? What if they just use cellular data?
fuzzzerd··on TrunkVer
I have been using MinVer for dotnet projects, which is similar but a little easier (IMO) to work with since its all based on tags.
fuzzzerd··on Cold brew coffee in 3 minutes using acoustic cavitation
There's nothing wrong with the name cold brew. It describes the difference from "standard" coffee. It is the charlatans selling warm brew over ice that devalue it.

As someone that greatly prefers coffee brewed cold and served on ice, I hope it doesn't fade away, because without it I have a lot less reason to get coffee out as opposed to at home.

fuzzzerd··on Microsoft says VBScript will be ripped from Windows in a future release
Typical Microsoft, way too early. Windows XP Tablet edition. Pocket PC.
fuzzzerd··on Detroit man steals 800 gallons using Bluetooth to hack gas pumps at station
Thanks, I hate it.
fuzzzerd··on Detroit man steals 800 gallons using Bluetooth to hack gas pumps at station
I spam all the buttons on any pump to attempt to mute it, and like you have had success with top right, or second from top on the right having the highest success. In my area, I'm only about 1/4 in being able to mute it, but when it works, usually top right.
fuzzzerd··on Unity's oldest community announces dissolution
I think this really succinctly describes why reddit sucks now.
fuzzzerd··on Why do software nowadays take so much more memory and processing power (2020)
> removing node.js directory with say 100,000 packages installed.

Pain. Just pain, on any system.

fuzzzerd··on Reddit’s plan to kill third-party apps sparks widespread protests
No. They charge a yearly fee for their "nitro" product which offers some perks in any server you're in. Each server can setup their own perks (emoji, reactions l, user name color, etc) for nitro users that join.
fuzzzerd··on America will soon see a wave of bank mergers?
You accurately, amusingly, and concisely articulated the situation. In a way that underscores the absurdity of it.
fuzzzerd··on After 20 years the Dwarf Fortress devs have to get used to being millionaires
I don't have the answer, but have been seeking it for a long time myself. Heard the same advise you got, make a community, join communities, post on twitter/reddit. As you said it just feels like fake advise.

As best I can tell, success in those efdorts is equal parts luck, wit, and having something unique yet relatable.

fuzzzerd··on What the Hell Happened to PayPal?
When you say passive web page, do you mean a simple .htm file with no php (or other) server side language? Or do you mean it's fully managed by PayPal using a gui/admin portal?
fuzzzerd··on Our conscious experience of the world is a memory, says new theory
Thank you for saying that. I was looking for something profound after reading this, and either the article doesn't explain this new theory well, or it is as you say splitting hairs.
fuzzzerd··on Employers should prioritize retention over hiring, study suggests
I'm one of those boomerang employees. It was the best thing I ever did. Left on good terms, learned a ton of new stuff at a few other companies, and ultimately came back a much improved employee, despite being a high performing worker to begin with.

Didn't realize there was a name/term for it, but it makes a lot of sense.

fuzzzerd··on Lufthansa has not banned AirTags
Phones haven't had to be shutoff on flights in years.
fuzzzerd··on Gen Z never learned to read cursive
What a horrible way to live. Dependent on others for even basic needs.

I'm not arguing you have to be 100% self sufficient, but learning to read what amounts to a specific font shouldn't be too much to ask.

fuzzzerd··on FTC to crack down on companies taking advantage of gig workers
Uber has not been cheaper than a taxi for years now. Definitely not since the pandemic started.

People take Uber now because it's about the same cost as a taxi, but the credit card machine is never broken, and they can be summoned on demand.

fuzzzerd··on After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel
Of course we can, but good luck getting people to use it. They'll keep using what everyone else uses.
fuzzzerd··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Trains would not be battery operated and have no risk of spilling the toxic battery components. They'd be powered by third rail or overhead wires. That is how most pure electric trains are powered today already.
fuzzzerd··on Mobile Electronics Workbench (2017)
There isn't a single "normie" taking apart toys to reduce the volume.
fuzzzerd··on WebContainers are now supported in Firefox on desktop and Android
Crazy that they removed it. It works well on Firefox for Android, and it used to work fine in Firefox desktop too.
fuzzzerd··on WebContainers are now supported in Firefox on desktop and Android
Glad I wasn't the only one having that thought. This is cool, but I'm bummed because my expectations were about multi-account containers on Android.
fuzzzerd··on Open source is not about you (2018)
It depends on your definition of contribute. You aren't entitled to have your PR merged to the main project, but you are entitled to fork the project and make your changes over there. The first is contributing directly to the project, while the second is contributing to open source at large. I believe the author was referring to project specific contributions.
fuzzzerd··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
I'd be interested to learn a bit about how that works for you, what part of the wlrld you do it in, and what you spend roughly on it per year.
