fuzzylightbulb··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
When you ask the shopkeeper where the Pepsi is, and he insists on showing you a Coke knockoff while actively hiding the Pepsi from sight, that is when you stop patronizing the store. This is what people in this thread are fired up about.

fuzzylightbulb··on Big data is dead
"customer obsession" was always at the mercy of the real obsession: "making money hand over fist". The former will ALWAYS lose out to the latter given enough cycles.

fuzzylightbulb··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard to disrupt Ticketmaster?
Tickemaster was terrible even before the Live Nation merger. The issue is that everyone is making money hand over fist at the expense of the consumer, while Ticketmaster is absorbing all the negative attention. Artists love selling out shows at a particular ticket price; it doesn't matter to them if the venue is full of true believers or if the true believers paid extra to be there so long as the "extra" is still within the price people are begrudgingly willing to pay. The venues love it because they get a portion of the ticket sales and the fees, and they don't need to manage the sale of tickets or employ folks to do so. No one in the chain is going to stick their neck out to kill the golden goose for the sake of the consumer. It's a mess.
fuzzylightbulb··on How Brian Eno Created Ambient 1: Music for Airports
This brings back fond memories of a house party we threw in college where we got a bunch of gear and put speakers all throughout the house. So CD 1 might be playing through a speaker in the basement and BR1, CD2 playing in living room and BR1, etc. Made for a really cool effect where different rooms had very different feels, and certain places in the house where you could get the full mix.
fuzzylightbulb··on Musk's trial hasn't stopped, no matter what he told Twitter, says judge
> I mean there's a $1B break-up fee in the contract. I don't know why he doesn't just pay that and end the fiasco...

People keep repeating this wildly untrue thing as if it is fact. The merger contract is a public document. Show us where it says he can just pay $1B and walk away if he changes his mind.

fuzzylightbulb··on Expelling Russia from the UN Security Council – A How-To Guide
The whole point of the UN is to avoid a major war between nuclear states. It is not a reward for countries that happen to share our values. The UN was designed to permanently cement the post-WW2 powers as the major powers, and to provide a forum for them to resolve major differences rather than feel like they have to resort to lobbing atom bombs at one another. Everything else the UN does - from the participation of small states to the very important humanitarian initiatives - is of secondary concern.
fuzzylightbulb··on Apple is building a demand-side platform
Turns out, rather than trying to figure out what you actually want (whatever that means), it is a lot easier for advertisers to tell you what you should want and to trick you into thinking the whole thing was your own idea.

fuzzylightbulb··on Growing Influence of State Governments on Population Health in the United States
Calling the uniquely American system of government an "experiment" is neither pejorative or new. Here's an article from 1860 [1].

If that isn't convincing, here is George Washington, January 9, 1790: "The establishment of our new Government seemed to be the last great experiment for promoting human happiness."

fuzzylightbulb··on Growing Influence of State Governments on Population Health in the United States
> Do not state governments represent "the public"?

Increasingly, no. Using Florida as an example, compare the popular vote spread (52%-47%) to the house seats (60%-40%). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_House_of_Re... This is just one example of how election winners in the US - both local and national - are trending over time to be less representative of the people they, well, represent.

>And how is devolution of power to the states (and then counties, and then cities) an "experiment"?

"experiment" in your quoted text refers to the first sentence in the paragraph you quoted. No need to try and twist the meaning of words by taking them out of context. The whole thing is itself a very common reference to the writings of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis in New State Ice Co. v. Liebmann to describe how "a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country."

fuzzylightbulb··on Google to Acquire Mandiant
I think that the closer metaphor would be if an American business was having to hire private security resources because it was on some resource finding expedition in an unsavory part of the world, which is exactly what happens all the time. Exposing your business to the internet is like opening up an infinite number of storefronts everywhere, and a good number of those places are not where you want to be.
fuzzylightbulb··on The Radical Woman Behind “Goodnight Moon”
Great recommendations, Rob.

We have pretty much every Sandra Boynton book. They are fantastic. Plus a good number of them are songs and she has collaborated with tons of musicians to make them very special. Perfect Piggies [1] is a total ear worm and here is a song done by the Bacon Brothers [2].

While we do ready The Going to Bed Book every.single.night, I think my favorite is Snuggle Puppy - A Little Love Song [3]. I read it a little different than how that video is, but its really sweet and pure.

fuzzylightbulb··on Deskreen: Turn any device into a secondary screen for your computer
literally every microsoft page does this, too. hold down the back button and you can see that you need to go back 2 hops. probably because you load the website and then it redirects to the local translation. annoying but not the end of the world.
fuzzylightbulb··on Google is wrong. Apple’s iMessage is a failure
I generally like the app, but I find the search to be hit or miss, and it kills me that I cannot search at all in the web client. It would also be trivial for them to coordinate backups of your messages, but this functionality requires a 3rd party app.

fuzzylightbulb··on Show HN: I built a CNC-machine from scratch, using 40x 3D-printed parts
Unless you have an incredible dust collection system in place, I would seriously reconsider any potential plans to cut MDF in your apartment. The particles are very fine and you will find it everywhere. And that is to say nothing of the particles that you'd be inhaling.
fuzzylightbulb··on Show HN: I built four eight-foot-long handwriting robots
Was this custom code that you wrote to do this? Or is this something that we can find out there in the world? I have been working on this off and on for a few years now and I have just not been able to come up with a reliable way to pull this off.

Great work all around!

fuzzylightbulb··on El Salvador will adopt Bitcoin as legal tender from today
I get it: US is big and bad and really mean. But no one is arguing that "good feelings" are the basis for anything. And it doesn't change the fact that the petrodollar myth completely confuses cause and effect, at such a basic level that it is laughable. This remains true even if you copy/paste a long list with zero support of your underlying claim, namely that every single one of these military actions was done primarily to prop up the USD "empire" as you call it. More USD change hands every day than the total value of oil sold in a year. Its just not a factor.

The use of USD as a reserve currency certainly is a net positive for the US, but the theory that we start major wars over that is not supported by the evidence. Hell, the price of oil and the value of the dollar more often than not have an inverse relationship traditionally based on empirical evidence, which is the opposite of the petrodollar conspiracy theory.
