funnym0nk3y··on Three Nord Stream gas pipelines damaged in one day
You really think that there is enough integrity in German politics and more important in German people that they won't change course? I don't. Seeing how people follow irrational populists on the smallest expected change in their life makes me doubt that.
funnym0nk3y··on Three Nord Stream gas pipelines damaged in one day
I wouldn't say that this is a operation for global hegemony or energy dominance. It's simply about preserving political influence in Europe. Unfortunately, I must say, Europe/the EU is not capable of a proper geopolitical strategy. Europe would easily be annihilated by Russian psyops, so in all that misery this brings to the alliance, it's still net positive.
funnym0nk3y··on Three Nord Stream gas pipelines damaged in one day
It doesn't. Russia's benefit lies in insecurity and control over Europe's energy supply. This operation however reduces their control and influence. In the short term insecurity rises, but this is a one time thing and lasts until solutions are found, which definitely will be found. Gas prices might be higher, but Russia doesn't profit from them, as they can't send gas to Europe anymore and the prices for China aren't influenced.

It benefits however US interests: Germany becomes a more stable partner, no matter how this thing turns out. Currently Russia is blamed, so the German reaction is more severe. In addition, LNG prices are higher, but I don't think that was the main reason for that operation in the first place. Blaming the US, even if their responsibility is certain, in a time of crisis won't happen as a united front against Russia is still needed.

The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that Poland's interests didn't lead to such a operation. They have even more problems with high gas prices than Germany because they don't have long term contracts with Norway.

I don't think this was some kind of psy op to drive a wedge between NATO countries as there aren't any benefits from that in the current situation. The only situation my tin foil hat could imagine this being useful is in the event of much stronger tension (like the constant threat of using nukes). This would need a coordinated reaction in which distrust could be fatal. For supplying weapons or sanctions that distrust is not doing much as politically Germany and its allies are more or less on the same page.

However, the blown pipes limit the movement of the German government. It is more stable towards protests if a cold winter occurs as there is no option left to appease Russia as the restrictions in the gas sector aren't a product of a revertible decision anymore. Being cold can't be ignored, which a war in Ukraine can be. In addition, any half-baked compromise Russia could offer accompanied by influencing Germany's opinion with gas isn't an option anymore.

In the end, this could even benefit Germany which lacks clear and brave decisions of its leaders. Not deciding if you want to evade the wall you are driving onto right or left eventually leads to crashing into it

Which convinietly covers up any explosion signs...
funnym0nk3y··on Three Nord Stream gas pipelines damaged in one day
Yes, it causes mistrust. But the benefit is not big enough. Russia needs insecurity on the one hand, and a possibility to give some kind of security. By blowing up the pipes the limit the movement of the German government.
funnym0nk3y··on Show HN: Simulate dollar-cost averaging in any mix of stocks
I have heard the same. But how could that be mathematically derived from a stochastic process? AFAIK the stock market is assumed to be a white gaussian process with mean larger than 0. How does the risk of bankrupcy and the variance of the portfoilio value at the end behave? How does it depend on the DCA period?
funnym0nk3y··on Show HN: Simulate dollar-cost averaging in any mix of stocks
Has anyody done a thourough calculation with statistics and all?

Just from intuition DCA would yield less than one lump if the expectation value is larger than 0. But then there is variance. If the asset is volatile enough that even a short period of DCA investing is bringing down the price a bit, I assume.

funnym0nk3y··on Telegram is asking German users when to share information with law enforcement
Yes, I agree that the reports on Telegram are mostly focused on right wing groups. I think that it's in ins very own nature that if there is a space for non conforming right wing ideas, there is also a space for other ideas that do not fit particularly well into the mainstream opinion. I would consider human rights activism and some work of NGOs as at least unpleasant for the government which would be a good reason to pay attention on where the communication happens.
funnym0nk3y··on Telegram is asking German users when to share information with law enforcement
Not all of course, is difficult to translate the word "Queerdenker" to English. I think we can agree that those have a significant overlap with "Reichsbürger", right politics, etc. They are not considered the core of society.

This was no accusation to anybody using telegram, I use it myself. I just wanted to paint a picture of the sentiment towards Telegram in Germany and give some insight why they could act this way

I have no personal experience with this, so I must have read I somewhere. Usually in the first hours your get hungry, which eases off after some time. After that, you can until you are hungry again.
funnym0nk3y··on Telegram is asking German users when to share information with law enforcement
Telegram is considered a platform for people, which do not respect the basic values of democracy like groups far right expressing xenophobia and groups which think (and express loudly) of the COVID measures as repression by some elite against the common citizen. Most of them whish for a autoritarian government. Groups which act against the constitution are observed by the Verfassungsschutz, an authority to protect the democracy and constitution in Germany. On telegram those extreme thoughts can be shared whithin their bubble which catalysts them. I don't know if this is the majority of users of Telegram (probably not), but it is strongly associated with them.

Those are the things I gathered by lightly consuming news. Maybe this is some kind of preparation for winter, where COVID cases are expected to rise in combination with very high energy prices.

funnym0nk3y··on Color has been disappearing from the world
For cars I assume one factor is resell value. "Neutral" colours seem to appeal to more people and thus selling a bright yellow car will either take you longer or won't get your as good of a price.

What exactly is meant by explaining variance? I can't really make sense of that term.

Hmm, never thought of that. When scabbing the barcode it's usually the EAN, right? To what are its that tied to?

First thing I noticed: There seem to be multiple entries for one product. One would expect that Coca-Cola is the same everywhere, but it has at least two entries for same can. Also Nutella, two entries for the same thing but in different sizes.

>> There is a differentiation between source and destination accounts (called expense and revenue) which makes reverse transactions a pain

> Sure, but that doesn't make it any less of a double-entry bookkeeping system.

Maybe let me formulate it a bit more diplomatic: It is not what I would expect from a double-entry bookkeeping system. Personally I find one account for each person more intuitive. There may be reasons for not doing this but they are not clear to me yet.

> Regarding the process you suggest, each step in your workflow is a massive undertaking to build. And it serves exactly one (1) user for whom the workflow fits: you.

> It's how I started Firefly III: solving my own problem. So I guess you know what to do ;)

I know that implementing this process is not walk in the park. Please don't see it as a request for you to implement that particular feature because I need it. But for me this would solve an issue I had with all of the personal finance tools. Therefor I wrote down my thoughts, maybe they resonate with someone and it results in a fruitful discussion. Or maybe someone had similar thoughts...

funnym0nk3y··on Firefly III: A free and open-source finance manager
Unfortunately Firefly is not really a double-entry bookkeeping system. There is a differentiation between source and destination accounts (called expense and revenue) which makes reverse transactions a pain. I pay 100€ for furniture in May and return it in July. Now I can either create the furniture store as both source and destination account or delete the first entry. Both is equally bad in my opinion. I think a much better solution would be to differentiate between my accounts and 3rd party accounts.

Also, what I was struggeling with (and not only in Firefly, but all budgeting apps) was the sometimes significant delay between the purchase and the bank transaction. In addition there is the issue with split transactions from imported transactions. Basically manual data entry is too much work and automated data entry is too faulty. I roughly sketched a process in my head which could solve that.

It basically disinguishes between manually added information and bank information. Both is stored and then combined to one transaction. This closes the gap between the bank domain and the "user domain".

1. Let the importer bring in all the bank transactions with the date, the transaction is executed. Display on the right.

2. On the left there are manually entered transactions, possibly with split transactions.

3. Now you make matches.

4. If there is no manual entry, you can add some information like splitting the transaction, add a date you did the purchase, etc. by clicking on the bank transaction.

5. All the above could be automated by rules. Like making matches, giving it a pretty name, assigning a category, etc.

6. Last step: Manually sign off all the matches. If a time period has only signed off transactions it gets a "true" designation otherwise a "preliminary".

Happy to hear about your thoughts on that!

funnym0nk3y··on I hate LaTeX, I love LaTeX
Honestly, do you have any idea how to improve the math mess? I did use both Word and LaTeX für equations, the latter is much faster for me. So WYSIWYM seems to have its usecase. But I agree, reading that equation is just awful. My idea would be tooling to partially render tha equation, e.g. rendering sections the cursor is not in.
funnym0nk3y··on I hate LaTeX, I love LaTeX
In my opinion LaTeX fails to deliver when doing anything other than text based work. Tables, images, etc are always a hassle. It gets even worse when changing one page to landscape mode. Debugging is a pain and there aren't any tools to help with that.
funnym0nk3y··on Ask HN: Alternatives to 1Password
I think it strongly depends on the ecosystem one is in and the usecase. Android support for keepass is pretty solid with keepass2android.

Well, I'm currently in my masters in electrical engineering in Germany and we are taught the same stuff. We even have a mandatory course about basic numerical algorithms.

What exactly I can do with that I don't know
