functionform··on When Will Being a Non-TSA Airport Become a Competitive Advantage?
When you're willing to put your kids on a non-TSA flight.
functionform··on Apple will require apps to ask users for permission to address books
This is a clear marketing opportunity for the Android platform, of course since no one really governs its course, it's completely being missed. I suppose cheaper/more features/hotter phones is the way they want to go.
functionform··on Author Steven Johnson on what e-books are missing: "Skimming."
I wish the popular e readers had apis for working with book content - skimming could be only one of the awesome enchancements the tech community could make. Among others would be tying words to wikipedia lookups or research citations to the actual content, aggregating all graphs in some sort of navigable 3d interface, page in page reading, the list could literally go on forever.

on the negative side, we'd probably have to sift through tons of crappy word cloud for your book apps.

functionform··on IPhones are for days, iPads for the nighttime
I've observed similar behavior for myself, except its Thunderbolt for day, Kindle Fire for night.
functionform··on Rails is Definitely Not for Beginners
sure it is.
functionform··on Hit men, click whores, and paid apologists: Welcome to the Silicon Cesspool
It isn't click bait. If you follow the network of blogs Dan talks about you saw the blatant self-interest machine hard at work in realtime. I was disgusted by it, but I'm not a tech writer, thus no platform to weigh in on. I'm glad someone picked up on it and gave it to them, and you only have to glance at the comments he got to know that I'm not the only person who felt this way.
functionform··on Hit men, click whores, and paid apologists: Welcome to the Silicon Cesspool
Needed to be said. Bravo Dan Lyons.
functionform··on The story of the hardest platform game ever
As a guy who opened this at work, lol. Not sure if he intended it to have a sexist vibe, I got the impression he was single and poking fun at himself. The game I will never play because I don't hate myself, but entertaining post for sure.
functionform··on How close are we to truly photorealistic, real-time games?
Actually once you can ray trace in realtime content creation is the easy part. Just setup a light source and say this is cloth/metal etc. Not sure where you were going with that...
functionform··on Explore local data: Crime, schools, and home prices across the nation
I'm not clear on the available data, is there a date range somewhere? Very nice btw.
functionform··on Why I Don’t Host My Own Blog Anymore
I'd argue any content software that doesn't automatically provide a complete page cache is incomplete.
functionform··on Why I Don’t Host My Own Blog Anymore
"It’s transparently obvious that PHP can scale — one look at who uses it (Facebook is really all you need to know) proves that."

If by scale you mean code your own extensions at the C level including your own VM, then sure, it scales!

functionform··on Your Phone Loses Value Pretty Fast (Unless It's an iPhone)
"Our data suggests that buying an iPhone is a better economic decision"

Wow, what a leap. Is the author aware the purchasing a phone for resale value is actually NOT the main reason to purchase a smartphone? Any article that starts by quoting MG Siegler should immediately be discounted anyway.

functionform··on ASCII interactive fluid animation
Minimalist, sexy, and original. Very nice, very nice.
functionform··on CoffeeScript Under Pressure
Found out the same thing. Developed mostly via TDD/QUnit in FF with Firebug only and occasionally running the entire suite with multiple browers. Even IE6 (via IETester) would compile several thousand lines in a few seconds or so.

Used tdd for almost everything even clicking ui widgets to populate from a rest resource and then validating the result. CS rocks!

functionform··on CoffeeScript Under Pressure
A DHH type would've slammed this guy for being not giving the language its due, you are way too nice J!

After working hours and hours on a Coffeescript framework, I can say thinking in Coffeescript finds a different place to exist than Javascript or any other language. I particularly made use of object and array structuring, destructing.

Given no tooling that I liked in the Java realm I work in, I made my own compiler using Rhino and Coffeescript.js.

Within a month I had accomplished what would've taken me 3 months in Javascript. Within two months I had rewritten my original framework to Coffeescript paradigms that were emerging from the code AND I was adding features to my framework rapidly. My Coffeescript code came in about 55% of comparable Javascript. In framework version 1 it was about 75% of comparable Javascript.

My biggest critique of the article is the process. The author picked a tool he are not familiar with, probably produced sub-par code, and then for the next project aims to pick something else they appear to be equally unfamiliar with. That's great for padding the resume and getting the next gig, but terrible for producing high quality.

functionform··on CoffeeScript Under Pressure
You have got to be kidding.

Paraphrasing: We were under massive time constraints and by our own estimation, already barely able to meet the deadline, so we decided to add a language which compiles Javascript even though I am not that well versed in Javascript.

There are so mnay things wrong with this approach I really don't know where to begin.

functionform··on Show HN: Get a better job offer, anonymously - my weekend hack
Whoa, this is a scary good idea. Wondering if I should post tonight. I feel dirty!
functionform··on Samsung airs $10 million anti-iPhone ad during Super Bowl [video]
Exactly, thats why I hate that commercial with the dancing mp3 player ppl, oh wait...
functionform··on Facebook hit git performance issue on large repository
What do Facebook and the National Institutes of Health have in common? I'm pretty sure this will end with Facebook building their own versioning system from scratch and give it some kitchsy name like "Retro".
functionform··on What exactly is RESTful programming?
I would say the real power is the simplicity of stateless programming. It's easier to debug and easier to code, thus stronger and faster development.

I think a lot of devs assume it just about "using HTTP to its true potential" which is incidental. Other protocols could be implemented in a restful manner.

functionform··on Dear business people, an iOS app actually takes a lot of work
good and cheap?
functionform··on 37Signals benchmarks uptime vs five leading webapps
The newer organizations on your blog spot don't seem to have problems meeting a similar uptime to you guys. Doesn't sound like this holds true anymore.
