fumar··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
I read this as “everyone is bad, so it is not fair to say China is a danger to the world.”
fumar··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
I can empathize. As an early teen, my family moved from a major US city to the rural midwest which is filled with "blue collar born and bred Americans." I was immediately bombarded with a strict Christian and puritan-like culture in high school. I grew up in a Catholic household but I had never experienced the intensity of a group of kids following their parents upbringing to a tee. They hated anyone who had longer hair and didn't play football and didn't go to church on Sunday. It may sound like a caricature but I immediately asked my parents to change schools. It never happened. I experienced a tough four years of high school because I liked alternative music and dance music like techno. I never made long lasting friendships during that era. Over 20 years later and I can't shake the uneasy feeling that seemingly well-intentioned people seek to eradicate uniqueness in humanity. I've been to plenty of those homes with parents who would greet me with polite words, but I could sense the dichotomy of distaste and good Christianity sensibility.

I never considered myself politically active during that era. I chalked it up to the country mindset. But, since then I've witnessed the rise of their hatred powered by the systems many of us built – social networks and similar technologies. I don't believe either of the two major political parties represent my ideologies and ethics. Instead, I find them both to be trapped in a game of showmanship while wrestling for control of a great nation. Seemingly non-1% citizens loose rights, freedoms, and opportunities to grow as persons. The majority of my high school peers never left their birth town and simply perpetuated the farce taught them in early in youth. The farce being that they own something of America to greater degree than anyone else and that their government owes them everything, but they want to exist without regulation or taxation...and any non-white non-christian non-rural humans. I still can't wrap my head around their logic and I spent a lot of time experiencing a similar existence.

Back to the topic of Texas life. I believe that people born in rural communities like I experienced, would have different belief systems had they been raised in more open and mentally adventurous environments. In other words, their culture is not genetic instead it is more like a meme. Why risk putting our nation's future in stifling cultural states?

As a side note, I witnessed many of my peers turn to drugs like meth and fake cannabis like Spice by the end of high school. Maybe that is the American and I did it wrong.

That is my understanding as well. Austin itself feels like a city plucked out of blue state, but I didn't want to risk being caught in the growing Texan zeal with nowhere to go.

I recently declined an Apple role that required Austin relocation. I like Austin and considered the move, but ultimately my family is my priority. We can't risk moving to a tech hub in a blistering red state with growing regulation on personhood. I told the recruiter Apple needs to reconsider where it plans to do long-term business.
fumar··on Apple unveils all-new MacBook Air, supercharged by the new M2 chip
Where did you catch that the trackpad was different than the Pros? My M1 Air has a glass trackpad.
fumar··on Apple Unveils M2

fumar··on Sheryl Sandberg stepping down as Facebook COO
I was recently taken aback by how much some of the online major destinations make per site load with ads. It is over $.04 USD. People visit hundreds of pages per day. What consumer will pay over $10 daily to access content that is free with ads?
fumar··on Show HN: Muse 2.0 with local-first sync
I want to try it but upon Mac download, it requires an email to proceed. Apple sign-on or Hide my email don't populate as an option.
fumar··on Stripe App Marketplace
I am always pleasantly surprise by Stripe's output from Increment to this marketplace. My spouse uses Stripe for two small businesses and we haven't had any issues. I work in ad tech and I point to Stripe's documentation as a great example of clear comms and instructions.
fumar··on Code and Theory's approach to editorial web design
I was thinking about these web trends today. The buzzy and dizzying color palettes make it more interesting but some are less legible than old geo cities. I almost always use the reader mode in Safari for long content. I also invest time in thinking through the best means to keep the web relatively open without ads and without borders. An average page load for major web destinations drives several cents (USD) in revenue. How many pages do people visit per day? It is not a negligible amount of revenue generated per person per day.
fumar··on The future of search is boutique
I agree with your last point. How would a search engine crawl closed spaces like discord or subscription newsletters? I find most of the reviews generated by bloggers, journalists, or influencers less valuable than an aggregate review on an HN post. I can read through a hundred comments before making a judgement.
fumar··on Sunset of libspotify
I am sure they will shorten tracks to samples without logins or try a subscription model. I am just waiting for the platform to go sour. I recently downloaded Soulseek again after 20 years. It feels like we’ve gone full circle. I like Apple Music but I want to have copies of my music on disk.
fumar··on I/O 2022
Should we look to biotech and robotics? I would love to live a life where my genetics don’t hinder everyday living or outsource labor like laundry to machines.
fumar··on Moving a macOS window by clicking anywhere on it
Great tip. I am loving this already.
fumar··on The Kia Instrument
I am an average runner with 30-40 MPW. It is a genetic disorder that I discovered after my mid-20's. My heart rate will hit 178-180 with exercise, but otherwise its always below average.
fumar··on The Kia Instrument
My resting heart rate is on average 48. I can't imagine resting at 120 BPMs. Although most dance music is in that area 120-140 bpms.
fumar··on TX-6 – Teenage Engineering
I have sold and bought the OP-1 twice now. At one point, I tried to replace my DAW and synths workflow with the single OP-1 unit. It didn't work. Three years later, I missed the OP-1 sounds and bought it on a whim, but I realized again how limited the sound palette is and its ability to work alongside non-OP-1 instruments. Both times, its aesthetic appeal and aspirational dream won over the rational me. It is a cool device. I will stick to Ableton Live, a few synths, and a midi controller.

The TX-6 is appealing to the gadget nerd in me...

fumar··on Ask HN: How does Apple achieve both secrecy and quality for a release?
I don't know why you are downvoted. I agree. Personal experience says that Apple is not a great place to work at for PMs. I am curious to hear other folks chime in to round out the discussion.
fumar··on M1 Thunderbolt ports don’t fully support USB 3.1 Gen 2
Isn't the Mac M1 mini $699?
fumar··on Birds Aren’t Real took on the conspiracy theorists
What is the mainstream narrative?
fumar··on Heresy
What I don’t understand is the nuance between freedom of speech in public spaces versus privately owned spaces. If the US government had a public social network, then people would have the right to shout ZYX. It is not the same on Facebook or TikTok right? Those are privately owned spaces. That would be like you coming into my property to shout XYS and I could remove you from my land. Am I understanding this correctly?
fumar··on Pidgin: The Universal Chat Client
How did I forget about iChat? That brings back memories. Mac 10.4 to 10.6 was glorious. The walled gardens got higher and less fun over the 2010's. Discord works but I am probably one generation too old to appreciate the meme-heavy communication style.
fumar··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
Would something like this work? Xbox or gaming console to Apple Studio Display. https://www.amazon.com/Anker-DisplayPort-PowerExpand-Aluminu...
fumar··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
Agreed. The G4 Cube is an amazing industrial design. I always wanted one.
fumar··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
I saw it more as a modern reincarnation of the G4 Cube.
fumar··on Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are already merging (2020)
Do we know of anything that has that type of lifespan outside of celestial bodies like planets?
fumar··on Kissing in the Middle Ages
We have control over the human culture right? In unison we can make a difference?
fumar··on Twitter misses ad revenue and user growth estimates
Should HN have ads and become a revenue generating part of Y Combinator? Twitter and Reddit fall in a similar camp. Should they take the ad tech approach to sustain themselves?
fumar··on I changed my mind about advertising
There is little to distinguish paid advertising to content marketing or PR. Which both easily bleed into the larger media ecosystem. If you take a step back most of our experiences, even on HN, are from press releases or news articles driven largely by marketing. It works. I’ve spent over a 18 years understanding and working in the sector. You can’t escape it. There is no centralized view on its ethical responsibilities. But there is no doubt that advertising and marketing and the media at large influence people and alter their behaviors.
fumar··on Ask HN: Does Anyone else working in a crypto company feel this is all a scam?
What about your work makes it scam? The lack of business utility? I've seen some communities have fun with NFTs like trading cards. I am not defending crypto, but I am curious how to better define scam as it relates to the hundreds for crypto proposals.
