fulldecent2··on Twitter hides Donald Trump tweet for “glorifying violence”
China is the leader here, let's briefly study how they do social media -- this will show where US is going.

They review everything after an account gets so many likes. The platform is responsible. One day I was doing something dangerous on a live stream -- immediately banned for 48 hours and got a human message. Posts with factual errors about current events -- immediately removed, on pain of platform liability. Human reply. No AI.

The platform is liable for what is published on the platform in the same way a newspaper is liable for what is published in the newspaper.

The liability is changing and so yes Twitter is going to police people.

I welcome this change in liability.

fulldecent2··on MacOS Catalina: Slow by Design?
NSA had a "hardening macOS" guide on GitHub that I can't find.

I wonder if that defeats the phone home that this article is highlighting.

fulldecent2··on Shopify Goes Digital by Default
WFH makes a lot of sense when you have a team of people that are used to meeting in person and are on the same time zone.

Daily stand-up meetings? Easy.

Weekly team and one-on-one meetings? Easy.

Knowing when your coworkers are working? Easy.

My team is mostly remote, diverse location, diverse ages/demographics. Getting everyone on Slack was hard enough. Having people report when they are actually contactable is impossible. And now that Slack removed presence from their API I have to rely on every more metrics to measure my team.

I should be using many metrics all along? No that's stupid, the reason I have employees is so I can build relationships with good people. If everything was metrics and work whenever you want that's called programming, not managing.

Considering that Plaid, which is "please enter your bank username and password so we can validate you are who you say you are" is very common, just assume nobody cares about anything
fulldecent2··on Unofficial APIs
Sharing your username and password is considered "high security" nowadays whereas merely "standard security" would be installing a root kit or running shell code each time you want to install something.

fulldecent2··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
Many business owners are frustrated by this. Suckers will call GrubHub and DoorDash to complain. When you call them you are entered into a workflow where you are talking to a human or robot that is trained to do the minimum for you to prevent you from suing them. They are doing unethical and/or illegal things so they are prepared for pissed off people and this is an expense on their business plan.

Instead, just sue them. Even if you have to file by yourself, without hiring an attorney.

Reading a sad blog post is fun. But reading "I just sued GrubHub because they are violating me -- I'm not sure what I'm doing, can anyone else relate or help?" is front page news in the 21st century.

Only if the page is low quality.

Leaving a low quality page after 60 seconds is way better than leaving a low quality page after 5 seconds.

Aperture did not have a monthly subscription that's why it was dropped.

They are working on Chess and Dictionary to get subscriptions too. But if you open the about menu, you'll see these have been updated in 15+ years, so it has not been much of a cost to maintain those.

fulldecent2··on Scraping Recipe Websites
I saw all the terrible SEOd recipe websites and my first thought was: I should make a better recipe website that is simpler and is better SEOd.

FIRST EXAMPLE:

How to cook chicken on a skillet

Step 1 -- get this much chicken [picture]

Step 2 -- cook on skillet for 5 minutes

OPTIONAL -- here are seasonings you may add [pictures]

RELATED:

But then I didn't understand how any of these websites are making money so I didn't do it.

Here's the solution. And it applies to Red Cross and other related enterprise changing from free to paid.

fulldecent2··on We Chat, They Watch

fulldecent2··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
For anybody else that spends most of their budget on advertising for your own trademark because your competitors do...

the solution is to inform your audience how they should forcible disable ads and to switch to a search engine that can turn off ads.

fulldecent2··on Asian American Discrimination in Harvard Admissions [pdf]
I agree that schools should have a "-10 Asian" line rather a "character" line where Asians are deemed to have poor character.

Now action.

Here is how we can use EXISTING LAW to fix this. First, cause schools to send admissions scores with full details to students (via a regulation, policy, or an admissions employees union). Next have students stipulate that all materials they receive will be published -- effectively making the school sending it an act of publication.

Now argue that an improperly low "character" score is "defamatory" and "harms" the applicant.

You have now met the burden of proof for libel in Pennsylvania https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/LI/consCheck.cfm?...

fulldecent2··on Asian American Discrimination in Harvard Admissions [pdf]
+1. You're bringing me around.

My wife goes to an Asian hairdresser for all important hair work because they better understand her hair. Nothing wrong with that. So why not the same for doctors?

fulldecent2··on Asian American Discrimination in Harvard Admissions [pdf]
The purpose of college applications is to get admitted. So stop doing things that prevent admission.

In college admissions check any race you want, but don't pick the one that deducts points. And for your last name put CONTROLGROUP. Done.

This applies if your family is White or Asian (my family is both).

fulldecent2··on “Sequel” to the million dollar homepage using WebGL
The sequel already landed. It's here https://tenthousandsu.com

And it uses blockchain. And it actually comes with instructions and customer support that you can email.

It is a great first crypto asset, since we walk you through it. And it is just the same gimmickyness as the original.

fulldecent2··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
Did you know that in a car you can change the climate control temperate for when the system is "off"?

Try it today. In an old car, set the fan speed to off. Then adjust the temperature. Switch it back and forth a few times and test it.

In a new car you need to turn the fan on, then change the temperature and then turn it off again, in order to change the "off" temperature.

On a touch screen this task requires many seconds of eyes-off-the-road-time to accomplish.

But hey, designers need flexibility because changing temperature is a new concept and they couldn't possibly handle a deadline to work with component selection and other parts of the product team.

fulldecent2··on Zoom monitors activity on your computer
I don't use Zoom. But I'll assume it's the same as Google Meet and so now I'll complain about Google Meet.

1. When the call quality is less than 100%, it is difficult to attribute this blame to the other person, my equipment, my connection, or the service provider. A heartbeat signal could fix this.

2. When somebody else is presenting, I can't point on THEIR screen. I have fumble through "higher, higher, too high, it's on the bar, do you see the bar?, yes, click on that one, you're right it doesn't really look like a pencil does it?"

I think we've reached peak Hacker News. This is now looking like Slashdot.
fulldecent2··on Firefox is showing the way back to a world that’s private by default
Inspired by this post, I just installed Firefox on my iMac. Here are two problems.

1) After a vanilla installation, I clicked the profiles icon. (It's the person in a circle button.) When I click it, a popup menu shows, then it relocates north 30 pixels, then it redraws where it is supposed to be. For a software with a main interface only having 8 buttons, it is bad that one of them does not work properly.

2) I'm at work right now so I planned to migrate from Google Chrome and uninstall it. I successfully migrated my work profile. I don't see a way to use a separate profile for personal. Tried Command-Shift-M (Chrome shortcut to change profiles) and got nothing. That ended it for me.

fulldecent2··on “We found PayPal vulnerabilities and PayPal punished us for it”
If you are receiving your money or reputation from a platform (like HackerOne) then you are going to be underappreciated, undervalued, and treated like an expense that should be minimized.

Here is what responsible disclosure looks like in 2020 from somebody that has self-worth:

> (Message posted to Hacker One, and emailed to any address you can find, and sent in a letter by mail. Yes mail. Also copied in all those ways to investors of the target.)

>

> Dear Sir or Madam:

>

> I have learned about a security issue in PayPal's service. This includes being able to login to user accounts without the credentials the system is expecting. [Be vague about how exactly it works, but explain the impact.]

>

> I am not an employee or contractor of PayPal and I will publish this on my blog at https://privacylog.blogspot.com to build on my reputation for finding and improving the security of internet systems.

>

> This post will publish on 2020-03-09, which is two weeks from today.

>

> If you are committed to fix this issue before public disclosure, I will be happy to work with you. You can contact me at ...

---

Key points:

- The discussion is about my reputation and values. - I am not demanding any payment (not sure if that is legal). - Set a firm publish date. - This asks them to make a commitment to fix and frames the discussion going forward.

And if they do not get back to you, then when you publish you explain it just like you see in newspapers: "the vendor failed to respond and act on this report when I contacted them by email, social media and paper mail with two weeks' notice".

fulldecent2··on A group of ex-NSA and Amazon engineers are building a ‘GitHub for data’
-5 insightful.

This post could turn into +5 informative if names and contact details were added for this unidentified "ex-NSA guy" and the "security software."

As-is, this is post is becoming popular because people are replying with random experiences and hate they have for NSA and insecure systems. But instead it could be helpful by damaging the reputation of a specific person that is peddling insecure systems.

This is why I browse with -5 insightful.

fulldecent2··on Twitter locks WikiLeaks account days before Assange's extradition hearing
Yes, I would like the recourse of suing you for libel in this situation.

And if you would like to protect against that risk you should consider including a "flag" button or something on each post where I, member of public, can get ahold of you personally, without needing to create an account.
