fscherer··on Emerging Architectures for Modern Data Infrastructure
why is it actually that SQL "re-emerged" as the transformation layer? I thought that it first shifted from SQL to Query Builders inside talend, matillion etc. Why now SQL again?
fscherer··on Ask HN: What essay/blogpost do you keep going back to reread?
Same here, I read it at least once a year.

fscherer··on Ask HN: What habits make a programmer great?
Regularly refactoring old code. Really helps to think more about abstractions & code design.
fscherer··on Ask HN: What should I ask Elon Musk for HTBTF?
Does he think that the advice which YC gives, usually to software companies, (ship fast and iterate, make something people want, only talk to users and build the product) can also be applied to cars and space?
fscherer··on How the Berlin startup scene is wasting its potential
Would have wished for more concrete arguments. For example saying the startups there live in the past but not explaining the sentiment or giving examples really does not help me understand the situation in Berlin.
fscherer··on A Tragic Loss
tagging duplicates, I assume
fscherer··on A Tragic Loss
I would have found it much more appropriate to first offer condolences before stating numbers about how good their system is performing
fscherer··on Ask HN: Best place to learn GPU programing?
the beginning is slow but then it picks up pace, I liked it and they present the topic in a way that is easily understandable
fscherer··on Brexit wins. An illusion dies
could anyone elaborate why exactly the referendum was mostly a vote on migration? I myself think that view (which is the basis of the article) is too limited
fscherer··on UK votes to leave EU
peace, one big market, free movement of people did provide some value.
fscherer··on UK votes to leave EU
yes, we already have the far right in france and the netherlands calling for their own referendum, the EU can't risk losing these countries and others as well, so they are willing to go to great lengths to not give these countries more reasons to leave
fscherer··on Nvidia-Docker: Build and Run Docker Containers Leveraging Nvidia GPUs
using containers to easily deploy machine learning experiments - thats at least how we use it
fscherer··on NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 1000 Series
8 vs 12 is a really big difference - especially with state of the art deep learning architectures. The problem isn't the size of the dataset but of the model. Large Convolutional Neural Networks often need the whole 12 GB VRAM of a Titan card for themselves and distributing over multiple cards/machines adds a lot of complexity.
fscherer··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Probably yes but I feel that general education is, especially in this community, a little undervalued. Democracy fundamentally depends on its population being educated and in more ways than just STEM. Better socioeconomic decisions are made if more voters are educated in areas other than programming (figuratively) and this is only achievable if this type of education is a viable path for young people, for example through tuition-free universities
fscherer··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Berlin also sees housing prices surge drastically, so the problem exists there as well
fscherer··on Request For Research: Basic Income
I think colleges should educate people and not only train them for a job. This is only really viable with free education and much harder to do with the alternatives which are discussed right now.
fscherer··on Lyft defies predictions by continuing to grow as a rival to Uber
Adoption could be slower than we think, but I don't think regulatory issues will be that big, the whole logistics industry will push it and many more. I also think that possible profits are the stronger incentive than preserving human labor
fscherer··on Lyft defies predictions by continuing to grow as a rival to Uber
I feel like the bet with uber is more a future reduction in cost by autonomously driven cars which will also increase the market size
fscherer··on Bill Gates and Petals Around the Rose (2003)
really? I found the rule for petals around the rose surprisingly simple (not to find it but once you know it)
fscherer··on Introducing OpenAI
I laughed out loud when I read that, really loud
fscherer··on Magic Leap raises $827M in Series C
the big bet is that it could become the next mainstream computing platform
fscherer··on TensorFlow: open-source library for machine intelligence
can anybody tell me if this can calculate the gradients of a conditional graph? (something that is not implemented in theano which gives me a huge headache right now)
fscherer··on Ask HN: What is your favorite startup that you are following right now?
Enlitic and magic leap
fscherer··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2015)
