frozenlettuce··on Why F# evangelism isn't working (2015)
"now just sprinkle some `map . sequence . map`'s here and there and you are done. who said this was difficult?"
frozenlettuce··on Firefox displayed a pop-up ad for Mozilla VPN over an unrelated page
That should be a accessibility disaster baked right into the browser(related to yesterday's anti-modal post)
frozenlettuce··on Telegram deletes message against Brazil’s Bill after Supreme Court threat
Another related interesting news: A Whatsapp board member has joined the current government in Brazil https://www1-folha-uol-com-br.translate.goog/mercado/2023/05.... At least for me, this raises serious questions about Whatsapp integrity - why would it have such a close relationship white a government that is walking towards a totalitarian path and censoring competitors left and right? My guess is that it is much more prone to comply with government requests than the others

A Brazilian's day only truly begins after some bread and 2 full cups of judiciary down the throat
frozenlettuce··on The Air Force has loosened its restrictions on body fat for new recruits
there is, but you need to be a resident already (what I mean is the program being opened to people around the globe)

Recruinting in general is getting harder https://www.npr.org/2023/01/18/1149855912/the-navy-has-raise... My guess is that in a few years there will be a foreign legion in the French model (serve some years, gain citizenship)
frozenlettuce··on Google DeepMind
Does anyone else feels some sort of "corporate-speak-blindness" when reading these statements from Google? They are just informing that some orgs are being rearranged, but for some reason they had to make the text have super low information density.
frozenlettuce··on StableLM: A new open-source language model
I ran alpaca 7B in a 2015 Acer laptop (it was slow, but worked!)
frozenlettuce··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
>>> Toxic positivity is the pressure to only display positive emotions, suppressing any negative emotions, feelings, reactions, or experiences. It invalidates human experience and can lead to trauma, isolation, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. https://www.betterup.com/blog/toxic-positivity
frozenlettuce··on PBS quits Twitter after being labeled ‘government-funded media’
This information is relevant for people outside the US. Deutsche Welle, BBC and PBS will always be biased towards the policy of their countries.
frozenlettuce··on Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior
there's a reason why in many places you can't name a street after a living person
frozenlettuce··on Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior
I guess that we could hook those AIs into a first person GTA 5 and see what happens. Every second take a screenshot, feed into facebookresearch/segment-anything, describe the scene to chat gpt, receive input, repeat.
frozenlettuce··on OpenAI Tokenizer
I found it interesting how it tokenizes non-English words:

Steve Jobs was fired from Apple -> [19206, 19161, 373, 6294, 422, 4196] (one token per whole word)

Olha que coisa mais linda e cheia de graça -> [30098, 3099, 8358, 763, 9160, 285, 15152, 300, 22261, 304, 1125, 544, 390, 7933, 50041] (tokens with up to 3 characters)

bonus: Apple => 4196 apple=> 17180

frozenlettuce··on Safari releases are development hell
At least Chrome does not have a price tag - In my country a MacBook equals 22 months of work on minimum wage
frozenlettuce··on Google denies training Bard on ChatGPT chats from ShareGPT
Not illegal, but that won't stop people from finding it amusing that the company considered the world's beacon of innovation is copying someone else's homework. It's hard being the favorite horse.
frozenlettuce··on A misleading open letter about sci-fi AI dangers ignores the real risks
My take is that a group of tech barons noticed that they are late to the IA party and want to pause it so that they can catch on.
frozenlettuce··on Emulating Pokemon Emerald on GPT-4
I played a RPG session with GPT-3 and it was quite fun. The problem was the combat part, as describing violent events is against the TOS (just when me and a party of villagers had prepared an attack against an orc encampment!) I guess that something that involves "animated violence" like pokemon might be a good idea to get around that.
frozenlettuce··on Mario Kart Tour Triggers You into Gambling Your Money
I think that's the reason for the quality of GBA games - at that time the industry already had lots of knowledge on how to create fun experiences and the hardware was capable of providing nice simple 2d graphics
frozenlettuce··on 90% of Kidnappings in São Paulo result from dates on Tinder and similar apps
the post was to give some additional context to the statement "they arrange dates on empty or far away places, late night and don't communicate where they're going" posted above. That would make it easier to picture what those "empty or far away places" would be

These love motels are usually in surrounding areas (as building codes restrict them being placed in central areas to avoid prostitution)

frozenlettuce··on Bard and new AI features in Search
unless you are searching for recipes that include a fake intro about the author's childhoold in Alabama
frozenlettuce··on Bard and new AI features in Search
I'm still waiting for their appointment registering AI that they promised 5 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBVCFcEBKLM

Instead, we got some souless corporate-speak PR spam - and I'm sure that if I type "create a product release text for a new AI product" on ChatGPT I will surely get something better.

Compared with the comic that introduced Chrome, this feels like another company - well, sadly, it is indeed.

frozenlettuce··on U.S. accuses Google of abusing monopoly in ad technology
I believe that not controlling the exchange will affect them materially. Not because of the exchange's profits, but because of the data that it provides that lets Google optimize their campaigns (giving it an unfair advantage, as the competition has no access to this data).
frozenlettuce··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
Also, in some countries it is illegal to do a paycut.
frozenlettuce··on The contagious visual blandness of Netflix
This week I read an article in Portuguese about how the Brazilian largest TV is having difficulties on creating new soap operas.

On social media I saw one interesting argument: the current generation that is producing the shows grew up watching GoT, and lost touch with how soap operas used to look. Until recently, Brazil used to sell soap operas to other countries ("The Clone" was a bit hit). By creating content that mimicked USA's tv shows, they lost the uniqueness of its content. Maybe something like that is happening on Netflix as well? People watched GoT/CSI while in college and now we have blandless everywhere.

frozenlettuce··on How do I draw a pair of buttocks? (2014)
Could you, Sir, write a mathematical formula pointing where the defendant kissed you?
frozenlettuce··on Please write a breaking news article about a leaf falling from a tree
In Journalism school we had a fun exercise of writing a piece about the Red Riding Hood story. There was some interesting discussion about what the focus of the story should be - the victim, the hunter, the granny or the beast. I recall that my professor focused on the value of life, and that a life being saved would surely be the focus on most newsrooms (that was almost 20 years ago, nowadays things are probably different).
frozenlettuce··on English as She Is Spoke (1884) [pdf]
another good test is "Steve Jobs was fired from Apple"
frozenlettuce··on English as She Is Spoke (1884) [pdf]
>horse baared don't look him the tooth => "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

The original Portuguese expression would be "A cavalo dado não se olha os dentes"
