frou_dh··on Apple Copland D11E4 Booting in the Browser
Using a home PC without an internet connection in the 90s, I would basically do laps of the entire OS, looking at every app/window/dialog, searching for novel stuff. That's what exploring one of these feels like!
frou_dh··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
I remember downloading ISOs at like 4-8 KB/s from FTPs. It was an achievement to even get one successfully downloaded and ready to burn.
frou_dh··on A20 Pro shatters Geekbench 7 single-core record – beats desktop i9 and Ryzen 9
Let's call the M6 the 'A20P Max'
frou_dh··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
I'm disappointed that it is not influenced by the username ... "You sound like a skateboard kinda person"
frou_dh··on Ask HN: What do you use to host side projects?
Back in the day I used an old laptop sitting in my house running with its lid closed and free dynamic-DNS :)
frou_dh··on Stop Making TUIs
You can't dismiss typography as irrelevant and trivial aesthetics. It's a whole field encompassing many things including legibility to humans. There's nothing more "functional" than principled crafting of legibility for each UI element. And no, a crude "Just use the same font in a single size for everything" approach is not the endgame for legibility.

Just because there have been some crappy industry trends doesn't mean the answer is to turn away and permanently regress to the confines of a terminal emulator.

frou_dh··on Stop Making TUIs
The typical TUI fan is a nerd with no clue about typography so therefore they don't notice any problem with being shown elements that have no reason to be monospaced in monospace.

i.e. ignorance is bliss in the world of typography.

frou_dh··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
I like Fastmail but I'm starting to feel that the subscription cost is a bit overpriced for the way I use it (just IMAP email - not using the app, calendars, contacts, file hosting, ...). I've researched and found some other independent paid email providers that are significantly cheaper, although I suspect most of having a low bus factor with just 1 or 2 people operating them.
frou_dh··on Incident with Github.com
Ideally they'd grandfather in accounts that were created long before the spammer days :)
frou_dh··on Best code editor without AI?
Live preview of what?
frou_dh··on old.reddit.com Now Requires a Login
Completely pointless smug comment, given that there are thousands of subcommunities of wildly varying quality.
frou_dh··on Os8088: A powerful Mac-like OS for the IBM XT, 286, 386
I'm sure it is a learning exercise in OS development to some extent, just a lightweight exercise compared to doing it 'properly'.

FWIW I don't upvote submissions like this though, because it contributes to a climate of cheap superficial fame.

frou_dh··on Let's all meet up in the Y2K
I badgered my parents into getting 64k ISDN installed at home in ~2000. Whatever the pitch was, IIRC my true motivation was to get double-digit ping times for Quake etc.

Playing from the north of Scotland on typical UK servers, that went from 200+ ms unstable on a normal modem, to 70ms stable. LPB† status, wahoo!

frou_dh··on Rio-vt and librio: Rio's terminal engine, now embeddable
I noticed someone has already adapted libghostty for Swift/SwiftUI: https://github.com/Lakr233/libghostty-spm

EDIT: Apparently an official version is actually coming soon: https://x.com/mitchellh/status/2072724957902381319

frou_dh··on In Memory of My Wife, Elise Cawley, with Thanks for 36 Wonderful Years
That's neat that she designed their house. When I've seen photos of Wolfram in his house I've always thought it looked an awesome high-class place.
frou_dh··on Why some people mow a lawn better than others
We get it, you're really proud that you choose to disable JavaScript, and need to let everyone know about it
frou_dh··on Just Let Me Write Digits
I've always found it weird when a form admonishes you for writing spaces or dashes in e.g. a phone number or credit card number. Hey, implementation, you're a computer! Strip them out automatically on the backend if you don't like them!
frou_dh··on Zig Creator Calls Spade a Spade, Anthropic Blows Smoke
Great point. It is simply lame impatient clout-chasing when someone goes out and promotes their project that is approximately as new to them as it is to the people they're promoting it to.
frou_dh··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
Talking of heavy-handed confirmation dialogs, there's a good example of this in Apple's Preview.app (PDF viewer). They made an unconfigurable change a few years ago, such that every single time you click any web link in a PDF, you have to confirm with a dialog that you want to open the link. You used to be able to just click links!
frou_dh··on My favorite keyboards
IMHO the persistence of Model M (now Unicomp) worship is a meme. Yes a chunky Buckling Spring mechanism is a very unique and "fun" feel, but that doesn't mean it's actually good to do a lot of typing on in terms of ergonomics or speed. So what of it? It's a novelty item, not the ultimate keyboard.
frou_dh··on Regular expressions that work “everywhere”
Grasping at straws, it's kinda convenient that ( and ) match literally if the text being searched is Elisp code!
frou_dh··on Om
I remember these guys from the glory days of the CrankyGeeks video podcast. John C. Dvorak and Sebastian Rupley had a great double-act hosting that show.
frou_dh··on Swift Package Index joins Apple
Back when I was following Swift, I was a bit confused by there being 2 distinct sites that seemed to be pretty much the same thing:

frou_dh··on Deno Desktop
Even the later JavaFX was a tasteless exercise. I opened some apps and you could tell within 1 second that something was wrong because all the text was using fugly non-platform-native (or somehow screwed up) text rendering.
frou_dh··on The Raku Foundation is born
> Any body who saw a Perl programmer do over a weekend, what they would take a year to do in their language(especially Java and Python)- had a deep rooted seething envy at Perl and Perl programmers. So they went around almost on religious crusade to have Perl gone. This was done entirely to crush competition. They just didn't want other people to wield a power they didn't have. Lisp has had a similar arc of development over the decades.

Isn't that the fate of the archetypical loser? To end up on the sidelines thinking "I'm actually the smartest and most powerful, the wider world just isn't capable of appreciating it".

I saw someone recently say something like... they wished contemporary Lisp people put anywhere near as much effort into creating lots of great software with Lisp as they do extolling Lisp.

frou_dh··on Nobody clicks share buttons
The tapestry of share buttons were certainly novel and interesting like 20 years ago. They may be lame and 99+% ignored now but it's been a slide to this state of affairs.
frou_dh··on Strace-ui, Bonsai_term, and the TUI renaissance
Real text lovers have an appreciation of typography and don't ignore the whole field and stay in the dirt with crude "monospace everything" approach.
frou_dh··on Air France and Airbus found guilty of manslaughter over 2009 plane crash
IIRC it seemed like that pilot was having some kind of nervous breakdown because he surreptitiously held back on the stick all the way from 38,000ft until the crash.
frou_dh··on Why TUIs are back
There's something disgusting about the use of characters for graphs/charts on a bitmapped monitor. Trust nerds to find a way to make stuff ugly!
frou_dh··on Parrots pack twice as many neurons as primate brains of the same mass
