frosty··on Facebook launches App Center
You need to translate things for an international rollout which takes time. Plus US is a known devil and easier to rollout and look at numbers to fix the glitches.
frosty··on Projects: hijack (Hijacking the iPhone earphone jack)
Also the headphone jack is available on all phones and if you develop for 30 pin interface, you have to design different hardware connector for different phones
frosty··on Google group for HN people in Bangalore
A similar one for delhi (NCR)

http://groups.google.com/group/delhi-hn-meetup

Lets plan a meetup :)

frosty··on Ask HN: What's the deal with Steve Ballmer?
He has a lot of passion and it shows. Also, he is awesome sales man to enterprises. Personally I like guys like him.

You put 5 geeks in a room and one guy like him to motivate and keep them happy once a week and rest of the week doing sales. Great combo :)

frosty··on Part time Entrepreneur, fulltime Employee
the issue i face is, when i start working on my side project at 8pm i just want to keep working on it and before i realize its 3/4am and now i am late for office next day :(
frosty··on Did Apple just ban location based ads? Foursquare/Gowalla in trouble?
why will foursquare and gowalla in trouble. Apple's blog clearly says you cant get user location only for ads but if you are using it for other features you can get it and use it anyway you like.
frosty··on Steps to be taken to incorporate a new company in India
well he paid a little bit on higher side. its normally less than 10k (i paid round 8k). Let me know in case you need contact who can do in India area.

in case you want a simple partnership then it can be done for 1k-2k but it has full liability

frosty··on Ask HN: What source code is worth studying?
i will say unless you plan to make small changes, you wont get much out of studying the source code. fixing small bugs in an open source project will expose you to lot of portions of source code and also give you some rep in case you want to become a contributor later
frosty··on Google still hiring, despite recession
if i had the money, i will increase my hiring spend as you can get much better people because number of new startups reduce and also less competition in hiring
frosty··on MySpace Close To Acquiring iLike For $20 Million
wow! great step by myspace. this sure will irritate facebook like hell. might even lead to bidding war with facebook.

surprised by low price though. might be an investment?

frosty··on Ask HN: how would you A/B test iPhone apps?
If the screen which you want to A/B test is not the first screen, you can make background calls to your server and based on result decide which screen to show. Write to user settings when you want to permanently disable it.

Note:

i) Reasoning behind not having it as first screen as it really slows the application launch.

ii) You should make sure that if webservice call takes too long, just pick one default which is shown to user instead of waiting for result

iii) if you really want to do it for first screen, load and save the result in user settings for next launch while the application is running

frosty··on Jeff Voegel: Beta Testers - Getting Them, Keeping Them
this might work for games but for boring things like enterprise software domain, whats the ideal way to find testers and how much should i pay them?

have any of tried out on freelance or amazon turk etc?

frosty··on [dead]
he is not being sued as of now.

its a cease and desist order asking him to stop the spam, change name to not infringe on trademark etc.

frosty··on The New Google Search
Its a completely new backend they are using so ordering of results is different.

From searchengineland: "Based on the blog post, we can guess that this new infrastructure may include ways of crawling the web more comprehensively, determining reputation and authority (possibly beyond the link graph and what’s typically thought of as PageRank), and returning more relevant results more quickly, although Google’s Matt Cutts told me that the changes are primarily in how we index.Google’s new search is only infrastructure related and includes no UI changes."

frosty··on The Great Oil Price Robbery (Indian story helpful to all)
bhindi = lady finger
frosty··on Microsoft’s Long, Slow Decline
you seem to be missing a very critical point in using financial projections.

Yeah, apple will keep gaining share in US but guess who will win in the emerging markets like China, India and Brazil. Microsoft will now start reaping rewards for its years of giving OS for free to these markets (basically by not cracking on piracy).

In these countries, its not about coolness or design. Its about the price.

Want an example? Guess how many iPhones sold in India?

frosty··on How hard was Felipe Massa hit, exactly?
There are no cockpit covers it allows the driver to get out (or removed by marshalls) quickly in case of fire (which was the biggest in old days).

yeah these days, risk of fire is quite less but still its a delicate balance which one has is more risky (fire or debris hitting drivers)

frosty··on Ask HN: Review My Startup: Twitter trends for your city
Yeah. Thats a nice idea. There is a service which does that for twitter trends (whatthetrend.com). Will checkout their api and try to integrate.

frosty··on HN Frontpage ranked using only votes from accounts over a year old
i actually wanted to use HN from RSS reader but so many stories get pushed that it was practically useless. So i created a filter which pushes stories to rss only when they gain 20 votes or more before being pushed out of front-page:

http://hackernewsrss.appspot.com/downloadrss

it has around 60% less articles. add to ur feed readers if you find it useful.

frosty··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
get rss feed with minimum points threshold lets say 10 or 20. currently too many entries get pushed to rss feed :(
frosty··on Ask HN: What do you use for HR (vacation, expense, recruitment, employee database etc)
actually we were really facing issues after we recieved a flood of resumes. Finally ended up a quick solution myself over the weekend. Its working for now but could be better :)
frosty··on Ask HN: What do you use for HR (vacation, expense, recruitment, employee database etc)
by recruitment what i meant was basically whenever a resume is recieved by email, i) a separate entry is created for that person.

ii) Other people can change status like hired, called for interview, telephonic done, rejected etc

iii) Other employees can add candidate feedback and other things so that everything remains in one place

frosty··on Ask HN: What do you use for HR (vacation, expense, recruitment, employee database etc)
hey i registered with account frosty :). i had seen one comment posted in my profile which i am sure i had not posted.

mailing you pg

frosty··on Ask HN: What do you use for HR (vacation, expense, recruitment, employee database etc)
There must be a bug, because I am also "frosty". I didn't post this article, but it has a red asterisk next to it.
frosty··on What kind of people are startups (and big companies) hiring?
Startups hire people who can build things end to end once given a high level vision.

The other kind are who need spoonfeeding with specs, UI wireframes etc. Those people goto big companies :).

Having run own business is not required at all because you will be joining as an employee

frosty··on Ask HN: No more Facebook Apps or Consumer internet
> "Twitter can become big but is it big enough given the hype?"

Yeah I totally agree with that lots of effort have into these companies and they will be profitable one day. I am not trying to say its pure hype. Its just overhyped. And its not like twitter is saying hype me, its just the bad ecosystem around it :).

Lets say a service like yelp, will you be willing to pay to use it. I would. They might not charge but still its solving a definate pain-point.

I thinking having an option to monetize using ads have led lots and lots of developers to just build stupid products and not focus on trying to solve a pain-point and provide enough value to the user that he says: "I like your product. I use it daily. Here you go $10, this months fees."

I think that would be the day :).

frosty··on Ask HN: Got rejected by YC 6-12 months ago? Where are you now?
I had the exact same idea for a crowd sourced dating service, exactly as you've implemented it with Yumbunny. Looks great, hope you have great success with it.
frosty··on Ask HN: You're a recent grad that's working full time on your startup. How?
When I was working on my product full-time, I always said I was "self-unemployed."
frosty··on Ask HN: How can I get up early in the morning?
Its not like somebody will pay me if i get up early :)

I say stay up as long as required and try to get as much done as possible. But one important thing is to maintain atleast a 12 hour overlap with other people in your team if you are in a startup. An added advantage is, there is somebody to monitor the servers round the clock ;).
